AbstractThis article gives a complete account of the research in synchrotron radiation powder diffractometry (SRPD) conducted at DESY/Hasylab between 1981 and 1992 and incorporates an extensive bibliography on SRPD in general. A detailed description of the experimental station for powder diffraction established in fall 1988 at beamline B2 of HASYLAB is given and selected examples of research conducted to date are reviewed to demonstrate its capabilities and potential. Aspects of instrument availability and beamtime allocation are entertained in the concluding remarks. References have been selected such that maximum coverage of the field is achieved with a minimum of citations and the list is hopefully complete with respect to the retrievable literature pertinent to the development of synchrotron powder diffractometry at Hasylab. Papers covering methodical aspects of data analysis and more general aspects of SRPD, however, have not been included.

Slime mould Physarum polycephalum builds up sophisticated networks to transport nutrients between distant parts of its extended body. The slime mould’s protoplasmic network is optimised for maximum coverage of nutrients yet minimum energy spent on transportation of the intra-cellular material. In laboratory experiments with P. polycephalum we represent Canadian major urban areas with rolled oats and inoculated slime mould in the Toronto area. The plasmodium spans the urban areas with its network of protoplasmic tubes. The authors uncover similarities and differences between the protoplasmic network and the Canadian national highway network, analyse the networks in terms of proximity graphs and evaluate slime mould’s network response to contamination.

Food insecurity is a recurrent condition in which members of a household do not have enough food to cover their nutritional needs; this condition contributes to increasing social vulnerability of those affected. In Peru, there are more than 9 million people who suffer this condition, which generates malnutrition and anemia, mostly in children. On the other hand, the waste of food is associated with production the large amounts of greenhouse gas emissions that affect global warming. According to reports in Peru, 20% of what is food produced becomes waste. This scenario in terms of food for Peruvians represents 3 billion calories in wasted food that could feed 2 million people. The Peruvian Food Bank manages food donations, ensuring this food can reach people in need through humanitarian aid entities. This applied research work uses the tools of operations research to determine a solution to the problem of maximizing the combination of food orders to be distributed based on their total nutritional value to the beneficiaries, seeking maximum coverage and minimum logistic costs.
