Introduction and Aim: Essential oils have been used from ancient times to treat different gram-positive and gram-negative bacterial-related infections. The study aims to screen the antibacterial, anti-quorum sensing activity of origanum oil against the common infection causing gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria.   Material andMethods: The MIC (minimum inhibitory concentration) and antibacterial activity of origanum oil against the eight bacterial species, namely, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Shigella flexneri, Salmonella enterica, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Streptococcus pneumonia, Streptococcus pyogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, and Enterococcus faecalis, was assessed by broth-dilution method and well diffusion method. The anti-quorum sensing activity was analyzed using bioreporter strain CV026 at sub-MIC concentrations, while the cytotoxicity of the origanum oil was analyzed using the SW480 cell line.   Results: The oil's antibacterial activity was analyzed by measuring the clear inhibitory zone diameter, and maximum inhibitory zone of 36.66 mm zone against Staphylococcus aureus (Gram-positive) and 33.33 mm against Salmonella enterica (Gram-negative) of origanum oil was measured. And the minimum inhibitory zone of 16.66 mm zone of Enterococcus faecalis (Gram-positive) and 19.66 mm against Klebsiella pneumoniae (Gram-negative) of oil was noted. And the lowest MIC (0.1 mg/ml) of oilwas found against Streptococcus pneumonia. The oil significantly inhibited the violacein pigment production (30.29 %) at 0.02 mg/ml concentration (this oil concentration did not significantly affect the growth curve). The in vitro cytotoxicity assay shows that the oil inhibited the SW480 cells growth with increasing concentration.   Conclusion: The origanum oil possesses antibacterial and anti-quorum sensing activity and can be used as an alternative for treating tested bacterial infection.

The essential oil of the leaves of Espeletia nana Cuatrec, obtained by hydrodistillation, was analyzed by GC-MS, which allowed the identification of 24 components, which made up 99.9% of the oil. The most abundant compounds were α-pinene (38.1%), β-pinene (17.2%), myrcene (15.0%), spathulenol (4.2%), bicyclogermacrene (4.0%), α-zingiberene (4.0%), and γhimachalene (3.7%). Antibacterial activity was tested against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria using the agar disk diffusion method. Activity was observed only against Gram-positive bacteria. MIC values were determined for Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923(200 μg/mL) and Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212 (600 μg/mL).

A novel prenylated flavanoid, isonymphaeol-D (1), together with two known compounds, isonymphaeol-B (2) and nymphaeol-B (3), were isolated from Egyptian propolis. The structures of the isolated compounds were determined by various spectroscopic methods. 1 exhibited antibacterial activity against Gram-positive (Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus) and Gram-negative strains (Serratia sp., Pseudomonos sp., Escherichia coli).

The antibacterial activity of functionalized zeolite NaY (CBV100) with different concentrations of 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) (0.01, 0.05, 0.20 and 0.40 M) was studied against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538 (Gram positive) and Escherichia coli ATCC 11229 (Gram negative) through disc diffusion technique (DDT). The characterization of functionalized zeolite NaY with fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy indicated the attachment of APTES on zeolite NaY. Through DDT, the inhibition zone of functionalized zeolite NaY increased proportionally to the amount of the amine-functional group attached onto zeolite NaY. Functionalized zeolite NaY showed higher antibacterial activity against Gram-positive compared to Gram-negative bacteria. It can be concluded from this study that amine-functionalized zeolite NaY shows evidence of antibacterial activities.

SummaryEffects of the addition of a proteinase (Neutrase 1–5S) and a peptidase (aminopeptidase DP-102) as agents for accelerating the ripening of Cheddar cheese on the survival of some non-starter bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Escherichia coliand aSalmonellasp.) were studied throughout a 4-month ripening period. The enzymes were found to have no significant effect on the survival of the Gram-positive bacteria but some significant effects were observed, at some stages of the ripening period, with the Gram-negative bacteria in that lower levels were recovered from cheeses treated with the enzyme system.

A series of basic derivatives of cholane and norcholane has been examined for bacteriostatic activity against the Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and Lactobacillus helveticus and the Gram-negative Bacillus lactis aerogenes . The basic derivatives, in general, were more highly bacteriostatic against the Gram-positive organisms than against the Gram-negative. Of the compounds studied, the highest antibacterial activity was shown by 3:7:12-trihydroxy-23-guanido-norcholane hydrochloride. No relationship was apparent between the lowering of the surface tension of the medium induced by the compounds and their bacteriostatic activity.

Abstract Background: To investigate the microbiologic spectrum of dacryocystitis in adult and pediatric groups, specifically the microbiologic differences between chronic dacryocystitis with nasolacrimal duct obstruction (NLDO) and acute dacryocystitis in pediatric group.Methods: This retrospective study was reviewed for demographic and microbiologic profile of dacryocystitis. The culture results were reported. Results: Sixty-four adults and one hundred and five pediatrics with dacryocystitis were included in this study. Of all adults, only chronic dacryocystitis with NLDO was observed. Of all pediatric patients, 89 had chronic dacryocystitis with NLDO and 16 had acute dacryocystitis. Gram positive and negative isolates were numerically equal in adult group (both 36(48.65%)), while gram positive isolates were the major organism in pediatric group (71(58.68%)). Streptococcus pneumonia was the most common isolate in both adult (11(14.86%)) and pediatric (30(24.79%)) dacryocystitis. For both pediatric subgroups, gram positive isolates were the major organism (59(57.84%) for chronic dacryocystitis with NLDO and 12 (63.16%) for acute dacryocystitis). However, the leading isolates in those two subgroups were distinct, with Streptococcus pneumonia (29(28.43%)) being most common in chronic dacryocystitis with NLDO and Staphylococcus aureus (8(42.11%)) being most common in acute dacryocystitis. Conclusions: In adult group, gram negative isolates were more common in dacryocystitis than before. In pediatric group, gram positive isolates were still the major infection pathogen. Moreover, the more virulent organisms were more common in acute dacryocystitis than chronic dacryocystitis with NLDO.

A quaternary ammonium salt was synthesized from diethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DEAEMA) by quaternization with hexadecyl bromide. The resultant compound (Am-h) was characterized by FTIR and NMR spectroscopy. Its bactericidal activity was evaluated by determining minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values and inhibitory zone diameter against gram positive bacteria (Streptococcus sp.) and gram negative bacteria such asAcenito baumannii, Klebsiella pneumoniaeandProteus sp. respectively. The results showed that the MIC values of the synthesised compound (Am-h) were 2 μg/mL againstAcenito baumannii, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus sp. and Streptococcus sp.

The essential oils from leaves of Baccharis latifolia and B. prunifolia collected in January 2006 were analyzed by GC/MS. The yields of oils extracted by hydrodistillation were 0.27 and 0.29% for B. latifolia and B. prunifolia, respectively. Sixteen (B. latifolia) and twenty nine (B. prunifolia) components were identified by comparison of their mass spectra with the Wiley GC-MS Library data and by their retention indices (RI). The identified products may be divided into four different groups: monoterpenes (9.0% B. latifolia; 43.9% B. prunifolia), oxygenated monoterpenes (0.8% B. latifolia; 5.4% B. prunifolia), sesquiterpenes (20.4% B. latifolia; 45.9% B. prunifolia) and oxygenated sesquiterpenes (69.8% B. latifolia; 1.9% B. prunifolia). The oils showed antibacterial activity only against Gram positive bacteria, with MIC values for Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923) of 80 μg/mL (B. latifolia) and Enterococcus faecalis (ATCC 29212) of 90 μg/mL and 260 μg/mL (B latifolia and B. prunifolia, respectively).

The antibacterial activity of Murrayaquinone A (10), a naturally occurring carbazoloquinone alkaloid, and 6-methoxy-3,7-dimethyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-carbazole-1,4(9H)-dione (11), a synthetic carbazoloquinone, both obtained during the development of the synthesis of Carbazomycin G, having unique quinone moiety, was studied against Gram-positive (Bacillus subtilisandStaphylococcus aureus) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coliandPseudomonassp.) bacteria. Compound10showed antibacterial activities against both ofEscherichia coliandStaphylococcus aureuswhereas compound11indicated the activity againstStaphylococcus aureusonly. Both compounds10and11exhibited minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 50 μg mL−1againstStaphylococcus aureus.

The in vitro antibacterial assay was carried out against both Gram positive (B. cerus and S. aureus) and Gram negative (E. coli and K. pneumoniae) bacteria. Floral petals of 20 different species of plants were collected and tested for antibacterial activity. The result showed that the petals were active against both Gram positive and Gram negative. Out of 20 floral petals tested, 19 floral petals exhibited antibacterial activity against selected bacterial strains. The minimal inhibitory zone of floral petal discs against human pathogenic bacteria varies from 2 – 6 mm. Rosa carolina and Ruellia tuberosa showed significance inhibition zone for all the bacterial strains while Lantana camara does not show inhibition zone for any of these pathogenic bacteria.
