Constructing infrastructure for the elite: Barra’s grand condominiums and the new way of living in the cityAbstract: Barra da Tijuca gained prominence in the housing scenario of Rio de Janeiro from the 1970s, mainly within the upper classes. Palavras-chave: Segregação Urbana; Produção do Comum; Estética; Política; Pesquisa-Intervenção.AbstractOur cities are keenly characterized by processes of socio-spatial segregation which divide them into estranged territories, each with its own cultural universe. Such estrangements areoften challenging to university extension practices, as wellas to other work and research practices which foster contact between different cultural universes. Based on our experience of‘feeling like a foreigner’ in the Favela da Mangueira during a university extension project associated with the Institute of Psychology of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, we offer a reflection on how urban partitions arise and how we can invent the common in a divided city. We look to make our experiences in the field conversant with the works of authors from different areas, such as phenomenology, political philosophy, history, art and urbanism. Thus, we seek to collaborate with other researchers who direct research-intervention projects, university extension, social movements, NGOs and other types of social organizations working in urban fringe zones. Keywords: Urban Segregation; Production of the Common; Aesthetics; Politics; Research-Intervention.

One of the methods to assess the urban development of a city is to allocate indicators that quantify its efficiency in performing various functions, such as urban mobility, security, sustainability, and economy, among others. The motivation of this work is the fact that the city of Rio de Janeiro, although widely known and admired around the world for its natural beauty, has a wide negative notoriety regarding its urban functionality. There is a critical need for investment in the city’s infrastructure in order to improve the quality of life of its population. The novelty of this work is in proposing an index that quantifies the urban functionality of the city of Rio de Janeiro and that represents urban development. The research focuses on optimizing investments in infrastructure and hence increasing the urban performance offered by the city of Rio de Janeiro. In the proposed methodology for modeling the Urban Development Index (UDI), this work presents the model structure made from a knowledge-based urban development assessment model (KBUD/AM), the determination of the indicators, the selection of the cities, the data collection from primary and secondary sources and the use of statistical techniques for data normalization and scaling. The research aims to quantify, compare and evaluate the level of urban development of Rio de Janeiro, performing benchmarking with other four global cities (Stockholm, Shanghai, Boston, and Cape Town). Cities are ranked for their UDI to make the comparison more straightforward. Based on the results, Rio de Janeiro ranks second to last among the five cities studied, with an UDI of 0.395, only slightly better than Cape Town. The results confirm that the city of Rio de Janeiro has several deficiencies, especially in the education, safety and health sectors, and is very far from most of the other developed cities. The city of Rio de Janeiro should promote investments in research and development. Finally, this work confirms that Rio de Janeiro must tackle security problems as a matter of priority.

The main purpose of this study is to produce knowledge about the Portuguese absorption of social life of a colonial municipality located at the southern end of the Captaincy of São Paulo. Thus, the development of this analysis is done supported by four statements. First, it is shown that there are occasions when the establishment in the municipality of Paranaguá by a Portuguese immigrant was due to the failure of the initiative to establish itself in a larger market square. Second, it is evident that Portuguese people living in Paranaguá had social and commercial connections in different space areas along the Southeast coast, notably the city of Rio de Janeiro. The maintenance of these connections used to create a dynamic of absorption of the traveling men to the municipality of Paranaguá. The third argument states that the establishment of a bond with a compatriot was operative for the young Portuguese realm to take root in the receiving society. At last, it is evidenced that it was not uncommon that obtaining a professional retinue training occured at the time of minority. Keywords: Southern Brazil. Commerce. The accelerated urban transition and its consequent unsustainability is a problem registered in several global scenarios. This issue has been identified in the city of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. One of the solutions provided for this theme is the application of specific methodologies to measure sustainability in urban areas such as the case of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for Neighborhood Development (LEED-ND). This work aims to analyze a real urban project, still in the executive project phase, Morro do Encontro project, in the scenario of the slum area of Rio de Janeiro based on the LEED-ND indicator system. The novelty of this study is to evaluate the existing relationships, between urban development actions and sustainability, through LEED-ND indicators, in the proposals of the Brazilian government plan PAC2, as a means of verifying their effectiveness. A total of 12 boards of the discipline of Urbanism in the executive project phase are studied. The analyzed items are divided into credit items and mandatory items. A total of 8% of credit items (CI) and 33% of mandatory items (MI) are attended. The results found indicated 47 sustainability items were not met and, therefore, can be improved. This comes back to the fact that 100% of the mandatory LEED-ND items were not achieved, which means that this project as it was conceived cannot be considered as a sustainable urban solution.

Abstract This study deals with the legal bases that support an objective discussion of the problems arising from the fact of having only one source of water supply in Rio de Janeiro. The background to support the discussion is the Law 9433/97. For this, we provide a brief overview of the legal framework related to water management throughout the history of Brazil, with its various constitutions and laws. Due to its relevance, there is a concise discussion of the actual constitutionality of the Act 9433/97, highlighting articles that relate to the grant of water right. To better understand the issue of supply of the Metropolitan Region of Rio de Janeiro (MRRJ) and the possibility of occurrence of critical situations of famine, it is offered a brief view of the hydrological potential of the State of Rio de Janeiro, particularly associated with Guandu and transfer water from the Paraíba do Sul River. The preparation of Italian cities to host the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympics is giving rise to many criticisms of urban development and redevelopment carried out in preparation for these events. This paper illustrates and discusses the impacts of these mega events on the city of Rio de Janeiro within the conceptual framework of David Harvey's theories. An illustration is given of how and on the basis of which approaches clearance processes have been and continue to be carried out at the expense of the most vulnerable groups in the population. They are being carried out as part of urban development projects currently in progress. It is shown that in addition to being clear violations of fundamental human rights, these processes are also opening the way to urban planning dynamics which involve new and questionable relationships between the various social agents involved and an increasingly greater impact of market forces.

Grupo operativo. Pichon-Riviére.Abstract: In a hospital reality in which the number of referrals to the SUS (Brazilian public health system) of obese people entitled to bariatric surgery is increasingly meaningful, the unavoidable production of devices or types for treatment becomes of great importance, such as groups which can ensure access to psychological treatment to all candidates. The aim is to present the operating group as a psychological care resource used in a public outpatient clinic of bariatric surgery in a hospital of the federal network in the city of Rio de Janeiro. It is a theoretical study carried out by the psychoanalytic bias. However, the choice to contemplate group attendance is more in keeping with the valorization of this device as a practice where mutual listening enables significant paths and resolutions for people, rather than being a strategy of mass management. Resulting in a successful experience for the promotion of mental health, surgical preparation and emotional support offered to this specific populationKeywords: Obesity. Bariatric surgery. For more than a decade, urban development in Rio de Janeiro was driven by the urgency of preparations for mega-events such as the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics. During these years, Brazilian authorities used the megaevents to create a state of exception that legitimized a broad range of state security interventions across the city. While Brazilian authorities presented the events as an opportunity to create a modern, dynamic, and socially inclusive city, this special section argues that the security interventions implemented in Rio during the years of Olympic exceptionalism intensified racialized and gendered inequalities and reproduced historical patterns of necropolitical governance that has sought to render black life in Brazil impossible.

Among contact sports, the practice of martial arts offers a greater risk of causing dental trauma and fractures as contact with the face is more frequent. The primary objective of the research is to evaluate the incidence of mouthguard use, and the secondary objective is to verify which type has a greater predominance and the difficulties in its use correlating to the type of mouthguard used. A documentary study was carried out with 273 athletes of different contact sports, among them: MMA, Boxing, Muay Thai, Jiu-Jitsu, and Taekwondo of the city of Campos dos Goytacazes, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It was concluded that the most commonly used mouthguard is PB Boils and Bites - Type II and its level of approval is poor, interfering with the athletes’ performance, mainly in relation to the breathing factor.
