The recent study’s objective was to detect variability in Egyptian multi-cut barseem genotypes via studying ten different commercial varieties regarding forage yield production during two successive winter seasons (2018/19 and 2019/20). These varieties, namely; Hartuor, Narmar, Sinai 2, Giza 6, Helaly, Gemiza, Serw1, Sakha 4, Khadrawy and Meskawi. Four cuttings were taken in each season. The analysis of variance in each season revealed that the mean squares due to berseem genotypes were significant for all studied traits. A wide range of variation was observed for plant height traits). Berseem varieties had fresh seasonal yield ranging from 114.70 to 137.72 and averaging 125.20 ton acre-1 in the first season. In the second season, the genotypes had a mean seasonal new yield of 146.89 with a range of 120.26 to 162.07 ton acre-1. Seasonal forage dry yield of the varieties ranged from 20.72 to 26.53 with a grand mean of 24.31 ton acre-1 in the first season, and it went from 25.10 to 29.84 with a great standard of 28.65 ton acre-1 in the 2nd season. Based on per se performance, the variety Khadrawy was identified for total fresh and dry forage yields. The values of PCV for different characters were higher than corresponding GCV values. Estimates of heritability were high for plant height at 3rd cut in the two seasons, plant height at the 1st and 2nd cuts, and seasonal dry yield in the second season. High heritability values coupled with high genetic advance were recorded for plant height at 2nd and 3rd cut in the two seasons, at 4th cut in the first season, and 1st cut in the second season. Genetic advance as percent of the mean (GAM) was found to be the highest for plant height at 1st cut in the second season (21.78 %) followed by seasonal dry yield in 2nd season (16.07 %).

The experiment comprising 30 okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) genotypes were grown and analysed for yield and its attributing traits at the Department of Vegetable science, Kumarganj, Faizabad during Zaid (2011) period. All the characters studied showed a wide range of variation. The variability for yield among the accessionsevaluated was also remarkable. The magnitude phenotypic coefficient of variation was higher than genotypic coefficient of variation for all traits. Both phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV) and genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV) were high for plant height (11.10 and 10.60, respectively). Fruit weight exhibited low value of GCV (2.31) and PCV (4.74) and likely to show less response under selection. High heritability (91.3) with high genetic advance (26.74) was recorded for plant height, whereas, ridges per fruit had high heritability (97.0) with moderate genetic advance (18.45). This study aimed to evaluate okra genotypes for variability with a view to providing information on the development of high yielding genotypes to meet the growing food demand of the populace.

Eleven genotypes of lablab bean were put into trial in four consecutive years to evaluate genetic variability among characters. Genotypic and phenotypic coefficient of variability, heritability and genetic advance as percent of mean were estimated for four yield contributing characters i.e. number of flowers per plant, number of pods per plant, average number of seed per pod and average pod weight (gm). The range of variation was highly pronounced in all the four characters. Without grouping the presence of wide range of variation in these characters indicate that they are quantitative in nature and are under polygenic in control. Mean with standard error showed differences between the varieties and co-efficient of variability in percentage (CV%) indicates certain degree of variability for the characters studied which are prerequisite in breeding research. Genotypes were found to be significantly different for all characters in analysis of variance. Low differences between PVC and GVC shows that these traits are less influenced by environment and the effect of heritable components were high. High heritability coupled with high genetic advance as percent of mean was recorded by number of flowers per plant, number of pods per plant and average pod weight (g) indicates additive action of genes controlling them. Forty three genotypes of maize were evaluated for eleven traits at the College Farm, College of Agriculture, Rajendranagar, Hyderabad to study the genetic divergence and various genetic parameters. There was a significant (P<0.01) difference between genotypes for all the characters, which revealed wide range of variability and high heritability for all the characters. The genetic advance as percent of mean was high for grain yield per plant (73.19%), ear height (51.05%), number of kernels per row (44.40%), plant height (43.46%), 100 grain weight (42.88%), ear length (30.79%), number of kernel rows per ear (25.23%), and ear girth (22.37%) indicating additive gene action for these traits. D2 analysis partitioned the forty three genotypes in to six clusters. The maximum inter cluster distance (39.38) was observed between cluster I and cluster V. Grain yield per plant (38.43%), plant height (14.29%), 100 grain weight (12.85%) and number of kernels per row (12.07%) contributed greatly towards diversity.

In the present investigation attempts were made to estimate genetic parameters for yield and its components in 315 genotypes of cocoyam collected from thirteen aroid growing districts. Plant height, petiole length, petiole breadth, leaf number, leaf length, leaf breadth, LAI, Inflorescence length, peduncle length, spathe length, spathe breadth, corm length, corm breadth, cormel number, cormel length, cormel breadth, corm weight, cormel weight, total fresh weight, total dry weight, yield per plant were taken in this study. Presence of significant differences together with wide ranges of variation indicates wide range of variability existed among the genotypes of cocoyam. Genotypic variances and coefficient of variation for most of the characters were remarkably higher than their corresponding environmental variances, which also indicate the existence of variation in genotypic level. Plant height, petiole length, leaf length, leaf breadth for cocoyam expressed high heritability with moderate to high genetic advance signalled heritable in nature. An investigation was conducted with ten exotic varieties of silkworm, Bombyx mori L. to estimate variability, heritability and genetic advance for nine quantitative characters. A wide range of variation was observed for the majority of the traits and a major portion of the total phenotypic variation was of genetic in nature. The maximum phenotypic and genotypic coefficient of variation was found in filament length (21.45, 21.44) and the minimum in hatching percentage (1.52, 1.44), respectively. A moderate to high heritability was recorded for these varieties. Filament length showed the highest heritability (99.98). A comparatively high heritability accompanied by a high genetic advance was also noted for majority of the traits. Substantial variability, high heritability and high genetic advance for filament length, weight of mature larvae, total number of eggs laid per female and effective rate of rearing by weight recorded in this study would afford scope for effective selection.   Key words: Bombyx mori; genetic variation; exotic varieties. Sorghum is the second most important cereal crop in Niger. The crop is grown in a wide range of ecological environments in the country. However, sorghum grain yield in Niger is limited by both abiotic and biotic constraints. Recombinant inbred lines derived from the cross of a local variety with a midge resistant variety and two local checks were evaluated during the 2015 rainy season across two planting dates in two environments in Niger. The objective was to investigate genetic variability for yield, yield related traits, and resistance to sorghum midge. High phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV) versus genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV) was observed in both sites and planting dates. Across planting dates at both Konni and Maradi, grain yield, plant height, panicle weight, and midge damage had high heritability coupled with high estimates of genetic advance. At Konni, high genetic advance coupled with high heritability was detected for grain yield, plant height, panicle weight, and resistance to midge. There were similar results at Maradi for grain yield, plant height, and panicle weight. Therefore, selection might be successful for the above characters in their respective environments.

Estimates of genetic parameters for ten genotypes of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) revealed significant variability for all the traits under study, indicated wide spectrum of variability among the genotypes. The estimates of genotypic and phenotypic coefficient of variation were high for plant height, number of seeds per ear and seed yield per plant. High heritability coupled with high genetic advance was observed for plant height, number of seeds per ear and seed yield per plant. Improvement in yield can be made by selecting these yield contributed traits having high heritability coupled with high genetic advance. Genotypic correlations were of higher magnitude as compare to their corresponding phenotypic correlation in most of the character combination, indicating the existence of strong influenced of inherent association for the various characters. Seed yield per plant exhibited significant stable and positive correlation with number of tillers per plant and 100 weight at genotypic and phenotypic level. Thus, it can be inferred that selection based on any one of these characters either alone or in combination, will result in identifying high yielding strains. Path coefficient analysis of genotypic and phenotypic level exhibited high positive and direct effect of number of tillers per plant, number of ear per plant, number of spikelet per ear, length of ear and 100 seed weight on seed yield per plant. Thus any selection based on these characters will enhance performance and improvement seed yield in barley.

Genetic variability, character association and path coefficient studies were carried out for yield and yield contributing characters for twenty-four diverse genotype of pea. The results revealed a wide range of phenotypic variation, along with high heritability in pea. Highest pod yield per plant was recorded in VRP-229 followed by VRP-372 and VRP-305. The characters namely, plant height and weight of seeds per pod showed high magnitude, while number of pods per plant, number of branches per plant and pod yield per plant showed moderate magnitude for phenotypic and genotypic coefficient of variation. The heritability and genetic advance were high for days to first pod initiation, plant height and pod yield per plant indicating its additive gene action for their expression. Character association studies revealed that pod yield per plant exhibit positive and highly significant correlation with number of pods per plant, number of branches per plant and days to fifty percent flowering. The path coefficient studies also revealed that maximum positive direct effect was observed through number of pods per plant followed by days to first flowering, single pod weight and pod length towards yield indicated that these characters may be considered as the most reliable selection indices while making selection for high yielding genotypes.

In this study 32 jute (Corchorus spp.) varieties comprised of 18 olitorius and 14 capsularis were evaluated and characterized for five quantitative and 12 qualitative characters as per revised official DUS Test Guidelines of Jute. The experimental materials were grown in a RBD with three replications at Baarrackpore, India during 2009-10. Significant differences among genotypes noted almost for almost all the quantitative traits. PCV and GCV were highest for 1000 seed weight (33.78 and 33.29%) followed by fibre fineness (27.11 and 26.70%). Low variability was recorded in case of plant height. All the five characters exhibited more or less high heritability coupled with high genetic advance as per cent over mean. Out of 12 qualitative characters studied, in C. capsularis 8 traits were monomorphic, 4 traits were dimorphic. However, in C. olitorius no trait was monomorphic, 6 traits were dimorphic and 6 traits were polymorphic among varieties indicating their potential for varietal characterization. Genetic variation abundance, high genetic advance coupled with high heritability estimates presents the most suitable condition for selection. Ninety-five hybrids generated from elite and new inbred lines crossed using half diallel mating design were evaluated under diverse environments. The objectives were to estimate genetic variances, heritability of traits and genetic advance and to determine correlations of grain yield and its component characters in maize hybrids. Analysis of variance revealed significant differences among genotypes for all traits studied except for ear rots. Estimates of phenotypic coefficient of variation were slightly higher than genotypic coefficient of variation for all traits suggesting low influence of environment in the expression of these traits. High heritability and genetic estimates were recorded for grain yield (79%; 30.27%), plant height (85%; 102.42%) and ear height (86%; 117.15%) whilst high heritability and low genetic advance were observed for anthesis date (87%; 5.8%), texture (75%; 8%) and ear position (71%; 0.23%). Correlation between environments using grain yield data revealed existence of a very strong positive correlation between CIMMYT2 and RARS2 suggesting that the sites have the same discriminating effect. Correlation among traits revealed that grain yield had significant (P &lt; 0.05) positive correlation with plant height and ear height. Similarly, plant height had significant and positive correlation with ear height while ear position was positively correlated to ear height. Path analysis showed that plant height, ears per plant and ear position had positive direct effects on grain, while anthesis date, ear height, ear position, grain moisture content at harvest and texture indirectly influenced grain yield. These characters&rsquo; contribution to grain yield is important and the strong association with grain yield implied that these can be used as secondary traits to indirectly select for grain yield performance in this set of germplasm across all the environments.
