The accidental venting of improperly filled LP gas cylinders has been the precursor of many fires and explosions. This paper provides the forensic engineer with the analytical tools needed to gain an in-depth understanding of that problem. With liberal mathematical annotation, and a number of exemplar scenarios, the author describes the relevant gas properties, the effect of not purging air from the cylinder, filling practices, low-temperature filling problems, computation of the quantity of gas vented, characteristics of safety relief valves, post-accident symptoms of improper filling, and some of the reasons why LP gas cylinders are improperly filled.
