Purpose – The aim of this paper is to investigate the importance of research and development activity in Health sector small and medium-sized companies in Wales. Design/methodology/approach – The case study approach involved extensive examination of the phenomenon of research and development in the organisations researched. Data for the case studies has been obtained from information relating to the organisations investigated. These have been combined with secondary and internal data sources from the organisations for completeness. Three case studies have been undertaken in the health sector in Wales and these are reported according to the company background, research and development (R&D) activity and the importance of R&D. Findings – The health companies studied reported that they undertook R&D in partnership with other companies, universities and the NHS. In particular universities were considered to be important sources of knowledge and technological expertise. In fact, R&D in universities has the important aim of providing postgraduate students with research skills, and related to this, public R&D creates considerable knowledge spillovers to small health businesses through “tacit” knowledge, training of researchers and collaborative ventures. Originality/value – A significant policy research question regarding the importance of R&D activity for health sector small and medium-sized companies asks to what extent domestic technology progress is influenced by global developments or domestic R&D. The answer appears to be that domestic technology progress is influenced by a combination of both global developments and domestic R&D.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to study the following research question: how can information systems (ISs) be the real sources of uncertainty for supply chain management (SCM), despite their positive roles in the effectiveness of modern supply chain (SC) organization? Design/methodology/approach A typology of the uncertainties linked to ISs and their usage is developed. Then, five explanatory case studies conducted in diverse industries allow to characterize this typology. Findings The case studies allow to identify the most frequently recurring uncertainties, namely, “limited IS capacity” and “data unreliability.” In addition, “company size” does not seem to be a relevant dimension for assessing the vulnerability of a SC to uncertainties linked to ISs. On the other hand, the “business sector,” with its implied power influences, was found to be a relevant dimension. Research limitations/implications This research does not allow to rank uncertainties according to their level of criticality. Practical implications This paper enables SC and information systems managers, as well as ISs/SC project managers to be aware of the need to consider ISs not only as the vectors for performance, but also as the factors for uncertainty in SCs. Originality/value ISs are generally considered to be a vector of performance. Nevertheless, their use remains problematic in many companies. This paper falls within both the ISs and SCM research areas. In the latter field, typologies of the uncertainties are common, but often ignore the uncertainties linked to ISs and their usage. The authors suggest envisaging ISs as the potential factors for uncertainty in the context of SCM.

India has emerged as a global player for pharmaceuticals. The pharmaceutical revolution of 1970-90 of Indian Pharma Industry had demonstrated that India could be self-sufficient in the manufacture of essential drugs at affordable prices. The turnover of Indian Pharmaceutical is over $30 billion in 2015 including $15 billion in exports.  It was a great honor to preside the 67th Indian pharmaceutical congress held in Mysore. The topic of Pharmacists for a Healthy India is close to my heart and being a regulator myself, I feel that the Pharmacy fraternity can play a much larger role in contributing to the healthcare system in India. Pharmacist as such are involved in a big way in the regulation of drugs, be it manufacture, be it sale or research and development. A contribution of the Pharmacists is there at every stage till the drug reaches the consumer safely. For this purpose, the society needs a pool of well qualified and experienced pharmacists, which requires regular updating of their knowledge to keep pace with the developments taking place in the pharmaceutical sector. The advancements in technology and the emerging challenges in the health sector require pharmacists to shoulder the responsibilities towards the utilization of scientific knowledge in the use of modern medicines and the protection of the public against dangers of wrong use of drugs. The Pharmacy Council of India on its part will have to ensure that the courses offered for creating a high technology based are calibrated in such a way that the education and skills developed suit to the requirements of the Pharmaceutical Industry as well as needs to the patients

AbstractModel-driven development platforms shift the focus of software development activity from coding to modeling for enterprises. A significant number of such platforms are available in the market. Selecting the best fitting platform is challenging, as domain experts are not typically model-driven deployment platform experts and have limited time for acquiring the needed knowledge. We model the problem as a multi-criteria decision-making problem and capture knowledge systematically about the features and qualities of 30 alternative platforms. Through four industry case studies, we confirm that the model supports decision-makers with the selection problem by reducing the time and cost of the decision-making process and by providing a richer list of options than the enterprises considered initially. We show that having decision knowledge readily available supports decision-makers in making more rational, efficient, and effective decisions. The study’s theoretical contribution is the observation that the decision framework provides a reliable approach for creating decision models in software production.

Abstract Information-Integration is vital for keeping manufacturing operations competitive. A case study approach has been adopted to better understand the role of information in integrated manufacturing. Information is now considered a corporate asset. Creation, processing, movement, and security of information is therefore as important as that of the products/services of an enterprise. The case studies have helped in identifying the issues involved in developing an information system and supporting software framework for a manufacturing enterprise. The case studies have helped in refining an integration model, and identifying the characteristics desirable in modeling methodologies and tools. This paper describes a case study dealing with integrated manufacture of optical fiber products. A phased development and implementation approach was adopted where a small, manageable slice of the system is considered for the case study followed by functional modeling (IDEF0) and data flow modeling (Data Flow Diagrams). This identifies the pieces of information of interest. The information relationships are modeled using Extended Entity Relationship (EER) diagrams which are then mapped on to a relational model. The relational tables thus obtained were implemented on a commercial Database Management System. The functional constraints and application interfaces were then built using SQL and commercial application interface tools. The sections in the paper describe the functional models, data flow diagrams, EER diagrams, relational database design, and user/application interfaces developed for the system. Implementation experiences and observations are discussed followed by plans for the next phase of the system.

As discussed in the literaturę, more and more transnational corporations (TNCs) were attaching importance to research and development (R&D) activity from the 1970s through the 2000s. This growing involvement of TNCs in R&D resulted in their dominant role in global R&D expenditure. Indeed, a comparative analysis of financial data collected for the group of the 102 largest corporate R&D spenders worldwide in 2007 showed that this group of TNCs accounted for a significant share of the worlds R&D expenditure not only in 2007 alone but also in the period of 2000-2011. Moreover, a similarity between their home countries and the countries being top R&D spenders was found; however, most of these corporations were conducting their R&D at international level. Furthermore, the analysed TNCs operated mostly in technology-intensive industries, for which the foun- dations were provided by a multidisciplinary science and technology basis.

The main goal of the article is to conduct case studies of CEE memory policies introduced after the fall of communism and to present them as an interesting field for examining the instrumentalization of law. The primary research question is: Do several case studies of several memory policies implemented in post-communist states help to examine the theoretical concept of the instrumentalization of law? In this paper, I intend to show the hidden potential of such studies. I present some of the specific elements of new constitutionalization attempts in CEE, which included narratives of memory in several constitutions in the region. I also show their relation to the concept of instrumentalization of law. Finally, I describe some political acts of instrumentalization of law in the field of collective memory.
