Digestibility trials carried out in November and December, 1971 with twelve West African dwarf ram fed Cynodon nlemfuensis var. robustus; Cynodon nlemfuensis var. nlemfuensis: Pennisetum purpureum Schum; and Panieum maximum, Jacq, each at 4 weeks and 8 weeks of regrowth showed that the differences that may exist between methods and among treatments in organic matter digestibility were not statistically significant (P> 0.05). Similarly, analysis showed no significant differences among animals or between periods within each treatment except for Cynodon  nlemfuensis  var. nlemfuensis where differences between period were significant (P <0.01). There were high positive correlations between in vitro and in vivo organic matter digestibilities as well as between in vitro organic matter digestibility and Total Digestible Nutrients (TDN).  It is suggested that in vitro organic matter digestibility can be used to predict the digestibility of these tropical grass species and, may be, other similar grass species.

Seventy samples of browse feeds, collected during late autumn and spring of 1971 from 42 western Queensland shrubs and trees, were subjected to laboratory analyses of the proximate fractions and in vitro digestibility. Crude protein, crude fibre and nitrogen-free-extract fractions ranged between 65 and 242, 55 and 353 and 425 and 71 1 g kg-1 dry matter, repectively. The in vitro dry matter digestibility coefficients ranged between 0.22 and 0.86. Comparisons of 15 browse feeds collected in April-May and October indicated a higher crude protein content (P < 0.05) and in vitro digestibility (P .= 0.01) and lower crude fibre (P < 0.01) and ash (P < 0.01 ) content in spring samples for most species. Nine browse feeds of known in vivo dry matter and organic matter digestibility were subjected to in vitro digestibility analysis. Whilst the in vitro and in vivo dry matter digestibilities were similar (0.43 and 0.45, respectively) the mean in vitro organic matter digestibility was substantially lower than the corresponding in vivo digestibility (0.40 and 0.46, respectively).

A total of 36 samples of feed &ndash; 19 samples of hays and 17 samples of silages were used for estimation of in vivo and in vitro digestibility. The organic matter digestibility (OMD) was estimated by in vivo and two in vitro techniques (method of Tilley and Terry and two-stage pepsin-cellulase method (Pepcel)). The regression equations were calculated from the results obtained in the experiment. Tilley and Terry method provided consistent results of OMD estimation for both the groups of roughages: in vivo OMD = 14.7 + 0.782 &times; [Tilley and Terry] (n = 18; R<sup>2</sup> = 0.76); in vivo OMD = 36.3 + 0.513 &times; [Tilley and Terry] (n = 16; R<sup>2</sup> = 0.75) for hays and silages, respectively. Different accuracy was found out in Pepcel method: in vivo OMD = 37.0 + 0.478 &times; [Pepcel] (n = 19; R<sup>2</sup> = 0.49); in vivo OMD = 37.8 + 0.484 &times; [Pepcel] (n = 17; R<sup>2</sup> = 0.87) for hays and silages, respectively. &nbsp; &nbsp;

Recently gammanase enzymes have been added to some cellulase based techniques (Dowman, 1993; De Boever et al., 1994). Few comparisons of these techniques have involved by-product concentrate ingredients. The objective of this experiment was to compare the ability of three techniques, in vitro rumen fluid (RF), pepsin cellulase gammanase (PCG), and neutral detergent cellulase gammanase (NCDG), to predict the in vivo organic matter digestibility (OMD) of concentrate ingredients.

Chemical composition, fermentation characteristics, in vitro digestibility and aerobic stability were evaluated in corn silage inoculated with microbial additives in two different experiments. Inoculant treatments (untreated, Bacillus subtilis and B. subtilis combined with Lactobacillus plantarum) were applied to fresh forages. Chopped corn plants (2B655 Hx) were ensiled in laboratory silos for periods of 7, 14, 21 and 63 days to evaluate the fermentation parameters. The experimental silos were weighed to determine gas losses. After the ensiling period, the silage was sampled to determine chemical composition and in vitro organic matter digestibility. To evaluate aerobic stability, chopped corn plants (AG‐1051) were ensiled in laboratory silos that were opened after 96 days of ensiling. The silage was placed in different buckets containing data loggers. The silage was sampled after 0, 4, 8 and 12 days of exposure to air to evaluate the microbial populations and pH. The data were analysed as a completely randomised design using a mixed repeated-measures model in the MIXED procedure of SAS. To evaluate each treatment relative to the fermentation times, a regression analysis using the PROC REG procedure of SAS was applied. A significance level of P < 0.05 was used. Inoculation with both strains increased lactic acid concentration, whereas the use of B. subtilis alone or combined with L. plantarum improved in vitro apparent organic matter digestibility. In the B. subtilis and B. subtilis combined with L. plantarum silages, moulds and yeasts decreased, and aerobic stability was improved. Inoculation with B. subtilis alone or combined with L. plantarum improved the nutritional value and aerobic stability of corn silage.

The relations of the laboratory measurement of cell wall organic matter (CWOM) components and of the in vitro degradability characteristics of CWOM with in vivo digestibility and voluntary intake for high quality white clover were investigated. The voluntary intake, apparent digestibility and apparent rumen retention time of CWOM of white clover harvested at various stages of maturity were measured in rumen-cannulated Merino wether sheep. The in vitro degradability characteristics of CWOM of these diets were also measured. This study has quantified strong predictive relations between structural fibre constituents or degradation parameters and both digestibility and intake for white clover. The CWOM, cellulose and hemicellulose contents and potential degradability of CWOM of the white clover predicted in vivo organic matter digestibility with good precision (r2 = 0.74, 0.67, 0.72 and 0.72 respectively). The voluntary intakes of organic matter and digestible organic matter of the white clover were strongly related to CWOM, cellulose and hemicellulose contents and to the rate of degradation of CWOM in the rumen and the fits of these relations were at least as good as those predicting organic matter digestibility. The predictive equations based on CWOM: OMD (g/kg) = 97.6-0.081 (� 0.012) CWOM OMI (g/kg) = 83-0.085 (� 0.018) CWOM DOMI (g/kg) = 71.4-0.098 (� 0.015) CWOM are recommended because of the ease of analysis of CWOM in the laboratory.

Abstrak: Penelitian ini telah dilaksanakan di Laboratorium Ilmu Nutrisi dan Makanan Ternak Program Studi Peternakan Fakultas Pertanian Universitas Syiah Kuala dan dilanjutkan dengan pengiriman sampel penelitian ke Laboratorium Ternak Perah Institut Pertanian Bogor (IPB) untuk pengujian kecernaan secara in vitro. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah menguji kecernaan secara in vitro complete feed berbahan dasar ampas sagu dengan teknik fermentasi yang berbeda.Pembuatan complete feed disusun sesuai dengan kebutuhan ternak domba. Penelitian ini menggunakan Rancangan Acak lengkap (RAL) dengan 3 perlakuan dan masing-masing perlakuan terdiri atas 5 ulangan. Perlakuan 1 (kontrol) adalah complete feed tanpa penambahan Saus Burger Pakan (SBP) dan tanpa fermentasi, perlakuan 2 adalah ampas sagu difermentasi dengan SBP selama 14 hari kemudian dicampur menjadi complete feed dan difermentasi hingga 21 hari, sedangkan perlakuan 3 adalah ampas sagu + complete feed kemudian difermentasi dengan SBP selama 21 hari. Parameter yang diamati dalam penelitian ini adalah pH, Bahan Kering (BK), Bahan Organik (BO), Koefisien Cerna Bahan Kering (KCBK), dan Koefisien Cerna Bahan Organik (KCBO). Hasil pengamatan menyimpulkan bahwa, teknik fermentasi yang berbeda berpengaruh sangat nyata (P0,01) terhadap semua parameter yang diamati, yaitu pH, BK, BO, KCBK dan KCBO. Dari hasil penelitian dapat disimpulkan bahwa nilai kecernaan complete feed berbahan dasar ampas sagu dipengaruhi oleh perbedaan teknik fermentasi. Digestibility Evaluation In Vitro Complete Feed Fermentation Sago Residues Based with Different Fermentation Techniques Abstract: This research was conducted at the Laboratory of Nutrition and Feed Studies, Program study Animal Husbandry, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Syiah Kuala and continued with the delivery of sample to the Laboratory of Dairy Cattle Institute Pertanian Bogor (IPB) for testing of in vitro digestibility. The purpose of this study was to test in vitro digestibility of complete feed made from  the residues of sago with different fermentation techniques. Complete feed was arranged based on the needs of sheep. This study used a complete randomized design (CRD) with 3 treatments and each treatment consisted of 5 replicates. Treatment 1 (control) was a complete feed without the addition of Saus Burger Pakan (SBP) and without fermentation, treatment 2 was sago residu  fermented with SBP for 14 days and then mixed into a complete feed and fermented up to 21 days, whereas treatment 3 was the sago residue + complete feed then fermented with SBP for 21 days. The parameters observed in this study were pH, Dry Matter (BK), Organic Matter (BO), Dry Matter digestibility coefficients (KCBK), and Organic Matter Digestibility Coefficient (KCBO). The result influence showed that, different fermentation technique was significantly (P 0.01) all parameters, namely pH, BK, BO, KCBK and KCBO. It can be concluded that the digestibility of complete feed made from sago residue influenced by differences in fermentation techniques

SUMMARYCobs and pellets which differed in particle size (modulus of fineness, MF) were prepared from dried perennial ryegrass and tall fescue and given to sheep. The MF values of the feeds were 2·45,1·09,0·81 and 0·74 for perennial ryegrass and 2·28,0·84,0·67 and 0·57 for tall fescue. Organic matter digestibility was similar for the two grass species when measured in vivo, but when measured in vitro values for perennial ryegrass were about 3 units higher than those for tall fescue. Voluntary intake and live-weight gain were higher for sheep given tall fescue, the difference in live-weight gain being just significant at P < 0·05. The response to change in particle size was similar for the two grass species. Intake was lowest and digestibility highest for the feeds with the highest MF, but differences between the three finely-ground forms of each species were not significant. There was a tendency for the intake of digestible organic matter to be lower for the feeds with lowest MF than for those with intermediate values for MF. The rate of passage of undigested particles was slower for cobs with the highest MF than for the other feeds, which did not differ significantly one from another.
