Earth Science education is at a turning point framed in a social and cultural way. The idea of sustainability and, consequently, accessibility to the educational system has shown important advances since the publication of the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda. The UNESCO Global Geoparks are internationally recognized as educational engines in pursuit of sustainability and instruction in geosciences, and they are making use of alternative teaching methods to get their message worldwide. Focused on geotourism and development, they try to continuously update themselves in order to offer quality education and accessibility for everyone. Information and communication technologies (ICT’s) keep also evolving and they are used as an interesting support within cognitive development and education at all levels. Voice-over is a classical tool used since the beginning of the recording era (radio, film, television, media ...) to communicate a specific message and transmit it adequately and coherently to the receiver. It is mainly based on the correct use of the human voice to generate sensations and create, in an artistic way, an emotional atmosphere that keeps the viewer attentive to what you want to convey. The nuances, tones and melodic curves mean that no voice is the same as another and the information is disseminated in very different ways depending on that. In recent years, it has been possible to observe a great increase in the use of voice-over and an exemplary care in the selective tone of the messages that has been reflected in sectors such as advertising, general media or scientific documentaries. The promotion of its use in Geoparks as educational support in audiovisuals, presentations or even in geological routes, tailor-made for different collectives, is a key factor to take into account to facilitate the understanding of the information, increase the degree of accessibility and contribute, thus, to the Sustainable Development Goals.

Purpose This paper aims to discuss the role of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in the effective assessment of the sustainable development goals (SDGs) related to smart and sustainable city initiatives. Design/methodology/approach The study is based on a systematic review of the literature within the Web of Science and Scopus databases, comprising the studies about ICTs related to smart and sustainable city initiatives and sustainable assessment. Findings The main results point out that there are several different ways of assessing SDGs performance related to ICTs use in smart and sustainable city initiatives. However, the effectiveness of these assessments can be questioned. The intensive use of technology understood as the core of smart and sustainable cities does not imply an improvement in sustainability unless these technologies are strategically addressed to underpin those objectives. Moreover, not all SDGs have considered the use of ICTs in their targets. Research limitations/implications The scope of the study is limited to “how” the information is used and managed, rather than analysing the sustainable performance itself. As a limitation, the findings and conclusions do not consider other sources of studies, such as grey literature. Practical implications This study suggests some requirements for providing better and more reliable sustainable assessment, making smart and sustainable city initiatives more correlated with the SDGs. Social implications By acknowledging the difficulties associated with SDGs assessment, concerning the municipal level, the study offers valuable insights into the effectiveness of public policies and public management. Besides, the findings shed some light on if and how the use of ICTs can effectively enhance sustainable development issues. Originality/value This study offers valuable contributions to the literature by providing a collection of insights regarding how the ICTs may genuinely lead to a sound assessment of sustainable development, especially regarding the SDGs.

The article examines the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) in achieving sustainable development goals (SDGs). This link is conceptually and contextually analyzed in the global context whereby scholarly opinions and research works are discussed to substantiate the role that ICT can play in achieving SDGs. The article further examines the link in South Africa, using the country as a locus of the study. The article aims to find answers to the following research questions: How is ICT linked to all 17 SDGs? To what extent this link may accelerate SDGs’ implementation? What is the impact of ICT on accelerating SDGs? What are the challenges hampering the efficient utilization of ICT for SDGs’ implementation? The article uses a qualitative approach with desktop analysis to draw significant information. In addition, unobtrusive methods were applied, such as conceptual analysis and document analysis, to draw conclusions based on the findings. The findings confirm that despite ICT policies and infrastructure, the use and impact of ICT on SDGs is not always high. The article suggests that improvements are required at policy, institutional, department and individual levels. The suggestions can be applicable globally, based on the technological advancement and socio-economic development in country-specific contexts.

The introduction of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) to remote and isolatedindigenous communities in the forested interior of Borneo has generated desirable development benefitsfor them as well as revealing the processes of community engagement that were necessary for bringingthem about. Associated learning has also highlighted aspirations for development that relate to thespecifics of their cultures and lifestyles in relation to the natural environment in which they live, lendingcredence to the concept of ethno or indigenised development in contrast to notions of asset exploitationexpressed within orthodox development. The emergence of the global Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs) with their imperatives for protecting biodiversity and the rainforests as well as combattingclimate change focusses greater attention on the role of indigenous peoples as stewards of fragile ecosystemsthat are highly susceptible to global warming. The experiences of applying ICTs to indigeniseddevelopment within Borneo’s rainforest communities - helping them maintain eco-friendly lifestyles, conserve biodiversity and record their traditional knowledge about the climate - carries lessons ofglobal significance for the wider achievement of the SGDs and the future of our planet.

This article aims at showcasing and displaying how the agricultural policies might become the key factor in causing environmental instability. Using various examples from different regions and countries we show that as the demand for food is growing with the increasing population and the reduction of arable land, governments around the world are intensifying their agricultural policies. We argue that as some of these policies might be irresponsible and short-sighted, this approach often leads to the massive adverse effects such as massive agricultural pollution, droughts, famines, and degradation. In addition, we show that novel technologies (especially information and communication technologies (ICTs)) need to be used in agriculture in order to help combating global warming and climate change as well as tackling other environmental problems. All of these might help the relevant stakeholders and policy-makers to shape up the principles and blueprints for the sustainable agriculture that would correspond the principles and provisions of the sustainable development and would follow the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

The field of information and communication technologies (ICT) is today one of the most dynamically developing areas in the world. The countries with the strongest economies in the world are investing a large amount of resources in digitalization and the integration of the achievements of the high-tech industry into the economy. Within the framework of this study, an attempt was made to assess the impact of the development of the information technology sphere on the indicators of socio-economic development in the group of developed and developing countries. Information and communication technologies can accelerate the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, which are now central to many countries around the world. This explains the relevance of identifying and studying the factors influencing the development of the ICT sector and the use of high technologies in achieving the socio-economic UN Sustainable Development Goals. To assess the impact of the development of information and communication technologies on the socio-economic indicators of countries, the method of regression analysis was chosen. The ICT Development Index is chosen as the central variable that measures the level of development of the information and communication technologies sector by country. The results obtained demonstrate the positive influence of the development of the sphere of information and communication technologies on the socio-economic indicators of countries, at the same time in the group of developing countries the influence is rather weak. The results of this study can be used to formulate a strategy for the development of the ICT sector for countries with different levels of sociocultural and economic development.

This study examines the empirical link between information and communication technologies (ICTs) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 143 countries for 2016. The adoption of the 2030 agenda of the SDGs has prompted the creation of research streams across disciplines, including the information systems discipline. Despite these, extant literature since the adoption of the SDGs has sought to highlight the importance of ICTs in achieving the 2030 milestones. Whilst many of these studies proffer the ICT–SDG linkage, there is no empirical evidence that examines this linkage. This study draws on archival data and structural equation modelling to empirically show the relationship between ICTs and the SDGs, on one hand, and the mediating role of human development, on the other. Our findings show that there is a direct significant relationship between ICTs and the SDGs and that investment in ICTs will significantly accelerate the achievement of the 2030 targets of the SDGs. Further, human development plays a significant mediating role in this relationship. The policy implications are discussed.

Our paper aims at assessing the sustainable development of the universities in the 21st century that is market by globalization, high penetration of information and communication technologies as well as global environmental changes. The paper stresses that the higher education is undergoing profound changes in its role and its position in the society and should focus its attention to the environmental challenges and the fight again the global warming. Higher education is ripe for reforms that are not intended to disrupt its main goals and its very essence but that might help it to modernize its approaches to achieving the up-to-date objectives that would maximize its contribution to the development of the society. Therefore, it appears that governments and the civil society alike should put more effort into embedding the sustainable development principles as well as sustainable development goals (SDG) into the educational curricular of the universities regardless to their geographical location.

This paper seeks to evaluate the role of ICT in achieving the sustainable development goals adopted by the United Nations in 2015. While SDGs do not specifically address ICT, or include a goal on development of ICT, as argued (Berleur & Avgerou, 2005)in this paper, it is an underlying element embedded in the very concept of sustainable development rooted in the definition as propounded by the Brundtland Report. The objective of this paper is to evaluate whether there is a possibility to develop a conceptual framework to ground the use of ICTs in achieving SDGs. For this purpose, this research has evaluated the common conceptual frameworks developed by scholars and posits that rather than developing an all-encompassing framework, it is possible to identify certain necessary features for the role of the ICTs in achieving SDGs. This approach enables policy and decision makers to look at the role of ICT as an integral component of socio-economic and environmental decision making and implementation.
