During the last ten years, mobile laser scanning (MLS) systems have become a very popular and efficient technology for capturing reality in 3D. A 3D laser scanner mounted on the top of a moving vehicle (e.g. car) allows the high precision capturing of the environment in a fast way. Mostly this technology is used in cities for capturing roads and buildings facades to create 3D city models. In our work, we used an MLS system in Moravian Karst, which is a protected nature reserve in the Eastern Part of the Czech Republic, with a steep rocky terrain covered by forests. For the 3D data collection, the Riegl VMX 450, mounted on a car, was used with integrated IMU/GNSS equipment, which provides low noise, rich and very dense 3D point clouds. <br><br> The aim of this work is to create a digital terrain model (DTM) from several MLS data sets acquired in the neighbourhood of a road. The total length of two covered areas is 3.9 and 6.1 km respectively, with an average width of 100 m. For the DTM generation, a fully automatic, robust, hierarchic approach was applied. The derivation of the DTM is based on combinations of hierarchical interpolation and robust filtering for different resolution levels. For the generation of the final DTMs, different interpolation algorithms are applied to the classified terrain points. The used parameters were determined by explorative analysis. All MLS data sets were processed with one parameter set. As a result, a high precise DTM was derived with high spatial resolution of 0.25 x 0.25 m. The quality of the DTMs was checked by geodetic measurements and visual comparison with raw point clouds. The high quality of the derived DTM can be used for analysing terrain changes and morphological structures. Finally, the derived DTM was compared with the DTM of the Czech Republic (DMR 4G) with a resolution of 5 x 5 m, which was created from airborne laser scanning data. The vertical accuracy of the derived DTMs is around 0.10 m.

The chapter presents the problem of quality of life modeling in the Czech Republic based on classification methods. It concerns a comparison of methodological approaches; in the first case the approach of the Institute of Sociology of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic was used, the second case is concerning a project of the civic association Team Initiative for Local Sustainable Development. On the basis of real data sets from the institute and team initiative the authors synthesized and analyzed quality of life classification models. They used decision tree classification algorithms for generating transparent decision rules and compare the classification results of decision tree. The classifier models on the basis of C5.0, CHAID, C&RT and C5.0 boosting algorithms were proposed and analyzed. The designed classification model was created in Clementine.

<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> The quality of image-based point clouds generated from images of UAV aerial flights is subject to various influencing factors. In addition to the performance of the sensor used (a digital camera), the image data format (e.g. TIF or JPG) is another important quality parameter. At the UAV test field at the former Zollern colliery (Dortmund, Germany), set up by Bochum University of Applied Sciences, a medium-format camera from Phase One (IXU 1000) was used to capture UAV image data in RAW format. This investigation aims at evaluating the influence of the image data format on point clouds generated by a Dense Image Matching process. Furthermore, the effects of different data filters, which are part of the evaluation programs, were considered. The processing was carried out with two software packages from Agisoft and Pix4D on the basis of both generated TIF or JPG data sets. The point clouds generated are the basis for the investigation presented in this contribution. Point cloud comparisons with reference data from terrestrial laser scanning were performed on selected test areas representing object-typical surfaces (with varying surface structures). In addition to these area-based comparisons, selected linear objects (profiles) were evaluated between the different data sets. Furthermore, height point deviations from the dense point clouds were determined using check points. Differences in the results generated through the two software packages used could be detected. The reasons for these differences are filtering settings used for the generation of dense point clouds. It can also be assumed that there are differences in the algorithms for point cloud generation which are implemented in the two software packages. The slightly compressed JPG image data used for the point cloud generation did not show any significant changes in the quality of the examined point clouds compared to the uncompressed TIF data sets.</p>

The main challenge in the renewal and updating of the Cadastre of Real Estate of the Czech Republic is to achieve maximum efficiency but to retain the required accuracy of all points in the register. The paper discusses the possibility of using UAV photogrammetry and laser scanning for cadastral mapping in the Czech Republic. Point clouds from images and laser scans together with orthoimages were derived over twelve test areas. Control and check points were measured using geodetic methods (RTK-GNSS and total stations). The accuracy of the detailed survey based on UAV technologies was checked on hundreds of points, mainly building corners and fence foundations. The results show that the required accuracy of 0.14 m was achieved on more than 80% and 98% of points in the case of the image point clouds and orthoimages and the case of the LiDAR point cloud, respectively. Nevertheless, the methods lack completeness of the performed survey that must be supplied by geodetic measurements. The paper also provides a comparison of the costs connected to traditional and UAV-based cadastral mapping, and it addresses the necessary changes in the organisational and technological processes in order to utilise the UAV based technologies.

Terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) enables the efficient production of high-density colored 3D point clouds of real-world environments. An increasing number of applications from visual and automated interpretation to photorealistic 3D visualizations and experiences rely on accurate and reliable color information. However, insufficient attention has been put into evaluating the colorization quality of the 3D point clouds produced applying TLS. We have developed a method for the evaluation of the point cloud colorization quality of TLS systems with integrated imaging sensors. Our method assesses the capability of several tested systems to reproduce colors and details of a scene by measuring objective image quality metrics from 2D images that were rendered from 3D scanned test charts. The results suggest that the detected problems related to color reproduction (i.e., measured differences in color, white balance, and exposure) could be mitigated in data processing while the issues related to detail reproduction (i.e., measured sharpness and noise) are less in the control of a scanner user. Despite being commendable 3D measuring instruments, improving the colorization tools and workflows, and automated image processing pipelines would potentially increase not only the quality and production efficiency but also the applicability of colored 3D point clouds.

This study provides an analysis of further professional education of university teachers in the Czech Republic and in selected European countries. Subsequently, it presents an international project with participants from the Czech Republic, Ukraine, Slovakia and Poland, which, ultimately, plays a role in the improvement of the quality of higher education.

As the basis for analysis and management of heritage assets, 3D laser scanning and photogrammetric 3D reconstruction have been probed as adequate techniques for point cloud data acquisition. The European Directive 2014/24/EU imposes BIM Level 2 for government centrally procured projects as a collaborative process of producing federated discipline-specific models. Although BIM software resources are intensified and increasingly growing, distinct specifications for heritage (H-BIM) are essential to driving particular processes and tools to efficiency shifting from point clouds to meaningful information ready to be exchanged using non-proprietary formats, such as Industry Foundation Classes (IFC). This paper details a procedure for processing enriched 3D point clouds into the REVIT software package due to its worldwide popularity and how closely it integrates with the BIM concept. The procedure will be additionally supported by a tailored plug-in to make high-quality 3D digital survey datasets usable together with 2D imaging, enhancing the capability to depict contextualized important graphical data to properly planning conservation actions. As a practical example, a 2D/3D enhanced combination is worked to accurately include into a BIM project, the length, orientation, and width of a big crack on the walls of the Castle of Torrelobatón (Spain) as a representative heritage building.

In this paper, the results of an experiment about the vertical accuracy of generated digital terrain models were assessed. The created models were based on two techniques: LiDAR and photogrammetry. The data were acquired using an ultralight laser scanner, which was dedicated to Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) platforms that provide very dense point clouds (180 points per square meter), and an RGB digital camera that collects data at very high resolution (a ground sampling distance of 2 cm). The vertical error of the digital terrain models (DTMs) was evaluated based on the surveying data measured in the field and compared to airborne laser scanning collected with a manned plane. The data were acquired in summer during a corridor flight mission over levees and their surroundings, where various types of land cover were observed. The experiment results showed unequivocally, that the terrain models obtained using LiDAR technology were more accurate. An attempt to assess the accuracy and possibilities of penetration of the point cloud from the image-based approach, whilst referring to various types of land cover, was conducted based on Real Time Kinematic Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS-RTK) measurements and was compared to archival airborne laser scanning data. The vertical accuracy of DTM was evaluated for uncovered and vegetation areas separately, providing information about the influence of the vegetation height on the results of the bare ground extraction and DTM generation. In uncovered and low vegetation areas (0–20 cm), the vertical accuracies of digital terrain models generated from different data sources were quite similar: for the UAV Laser Scanning (ULS) data, the RMSE was 0.11 m, and for the image-based data collected using the UAV platform, it was 0.14 m, whereas for medium vegetation (higher than 60 cm), the RMSE from these two data sources were 0.11 m and 0.36 m, respectively. A decrease in the accuracy of 0.10 m, for every 20 cm of vegetation height, was observed for photogrammetric data; and such a dependency was not noticed in the case of models created from the ULS data.
