The conservation of Cultural Heritage depends on the availability of means and resources and, consequently, on the possibility to make effective operations of data acquisition. In facts, on the one hand the creation of data repositories allows the description of the present state-of-art, in order to preserve the testimonial value and to permit the fruition. On the other hand, data acquisition grants a metrical knowledge, which is particularly useful for a direct restoration of the surveyed objects, through the analysis of their 3D digital models. In the last decades, the continuous increase and improvement of 3D survey techniques and of tools for the geometric and digital data management have represented a great support to the development of documentary activities. In particular, Photogrammetry is a survey technique highly appropriate in the creation of data repositories in the field of Cultural Heritage, thanks to its advantages of cheapness, flexibility, speed, and the opportunity to ensure the operators’ safety in hazardous areas too. In order to obtain a complete documentation, the high precision of the on-site operations must be coupled with an effective post-processing phase. Hence, a comparison among some of the photogrammetric software currently available was performed by the authors, with a particular attention to the workflow completeness and the final products quality.

Scholars with different backgrounds have carried out extensive surveys centred on how 3D digital models, data acquisition and processing have changed over the years in fields of archaeology and architecture and more in general in the Cultural Heritage panorama: the current framework focused on reality-based modelling is then split in several branches: acquisition, communication and analysis of buildings (Pintus et alii, 2014). Despite the wide set of well-structured and all-encompassing surveys on the IT application in Cultural Heritage, several open issues still seem to be present, in particular once the purpose of digital simulacra is the one to fit with the “pre-informatics" legacy of architectural/archaeological representation (historical drawings with their graphic codes and aesthetics). Starting from a series of heterogeneous matters that came up studying two Italian UNESCO sites, this paper aims at underlining the importance of integrating different pipelines from different technological fields, in order to achieve multipurpose models, capable to comply with graphic codes of traditional survey, as well as semantic enrichment, and last but not least, data compression/portability and texture reliability under different lighting simulation.

<p>The paper focuses on the cultural components of a walking trail axed upon the ‘Theodoros Papagiannis’ collection of sculpture. The latter is hosted in the Museum of Contemporary Art of Helliniko, a village tucked within the Municipality of Northern Tzoumerka, Epirus, Greece. While the artist’s sculptures are also found in the Museum’s courtyard are they also admired along a walking trail that begins at the village’s entry point and ends at the Post-Byzantine Monastery of Tsouka. The research is carried out from the perspective of a walking trail’s cultural value. Our trail of interest joins two locations, the one being secular and the other sacred, thus defining an itinerary which unfolds along these two different attraction sites. As a result, the walker/traveler moves from one established location to the other, all the while objectifying the two and defining space under his/her own terms. He/She makes connections between both sites in order to restore the unity of space and thus becomes a travelling witness to the creation of a single narrative. He/She enjoys the privilege of the travelled route, as well as all that exists along this route.</p>

<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> The recent scientific and technical developments of reverse engineering methods and tools have broadened the possibilities of applications in the field of cultural heritage conservation. In this paper, two different non-contact reverse engineering systems were utilized for 3D data acquisition of a cultural heritage artefact. The object of interest is a 17th century wooden engraved ecclesiastical sanctuary ciborium. The requirement of the 3D model is to aid the art conservators for the preservation of the wooden material and the restoration of small damages and cracks in the engraved parts, thus requiring accuracy of the model in the order of sub-millimetre. In this work, a Faro Vantage laser tracker was employed along with the FARO Edge Arm. In addition, image-based modelling was also implemented with a large number of overlapping images acquired with a Canon EOS 6D camera and processed using the well-known Structure from Motion (SfM) method with an auto-calibration procedure. The digital data acquisition and processing procedures of the scanned geometry are described and compared to evaluate the performance of both systems in terms of data acquisition time, processing time, reconstruction precision and final model quality. Whilst models produced with laser scanning and image-based techniques is not a novel approach, the combination of laser tracking and photogrammetric data still presents limited documentation in the field of cultural artefact documentation mainly due to the extremely high cost of the laser tracking systems.</p>

In this paper we investigate many of the various storage, portability and interoperability issues arising among archaeologists and cultural heritage people when dealing with 3D technologies. On the one side, the available digital repositories look often unable to guarantee affordable features in the management of 3D models and their metadata; on the other side the nature of most of the available data format for 3D encoding seem to be not satisfactory for the necessary portability required nowadays by 3D information across different systems. We propose a set of possible solutions to show how integration can be achieved through the use of well known and wide accepted standards for data encoding and data storage. Using a set of 3D models acquired during various archaeological campaigns and a number of open source tools, we have implemented a straightforward encoding process to generate meaningful semantic data and metadata. We will also present the interoperability process carried out to integrate the encoded 3D models and the geographic features produced by the archaeologists. Finally we will report the preliminary (rather encouraging) development of a semantic enabled and persistent digital repository, where 3D models (but also any kind of digital data and metadata) can easily be stored, retrieved and shared with the content of other digital archives.

In this essay, which starts from the current scenario triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic and from the impact it has had on various sectors, the Authors lay the foundations for the study of a welfare of the heritage to accompany the cultural welfare through the creation of a model of integrated management of the same (heritage) both in aspects related to the enhancement and in those inherent in the process of cultural innovation, aiming attention at an international audience. A welfare that bets on the creation of “ecosystems” of welfare of the heritage able to connect to European clusters for a participatory management of the same, in the renewed scenario of economic recovery where the combination of culture and employment is central. All is analysed and contextualised in the welfare dimension/view. This essay, according to a definitive methodological approach in the opening paragraphs, reviews the value of culture and heritage in the European scenario - including a focus on the National Recovery and Resilience Plan - along with the themes of sustainable development and cultural indicators 2030, passing through the analysis of cultural activators and circular business models. In the second part, the effects of the pandemic on cultural employment are analysed, as well as scenarios of new professionalism in the job market in the sectors of heritage and culture, without neglecting the focus on the relationship between tourism and culture. According to a circular path, which is connected to the incipit of the essay that at the beginning refers to the Assembly of “Gli Stati Generali del Patrimonio Italiano” (The General States of the Italian Heritage), the Authors outline the perspectives de iure condendo also related to the workshop activities of the Assembly and to the need to iitiate among stakeholders (public and private) a continuous and participatory confrontation in order to promote, on the one hand, a new and sustainabe entrepreneurship of cultural heritage, and on the other hand, structural policies aimed at creating employment. This study examined the characteristics of a variable three-point Gauss quadrature using a variable set of weighting factors and corresponding optimal sampling points. The major findings were as follows. The one-point, two-point, and three-point Gauss quadratures that adopt the Legendre sampling points and the well-known Simpson’s 1/3 rule were found to be special cases of the variable three-point Gauss quadrature. In addition, the three-point Gauss quadrature may have out-of-domain sampling points beyond the domain end points. By applying the quadratically extrapolated integrals and nonlinearity index, the accuracy of the integration could be increased significantly for evenly acquired data, which is popular with modern sophisticated digital data acquisition systems, without using higher-order extrapolation polynomials.

In attempting to characterize Second Temple legends of the Hasmoneans, the concluding chapter identifies several distinct genres: fragments from Aramaic chronicles, priestly temple legends, Pharisaic legends, and theodicean legends explaining the fall of the Hasmonean dynasty. The chapter then examines, by generation, how Josephus on the one hand, and the rabbis on the other, reworked these embedded stories. The Josephan treatment aimed to reduce the hostility of the early traditions toward the Hasmoneans by imposing a contrasting accusatory framework that blames the Pharisees and justifies the Hasmonean ruler. The rabbinic treatment of the last three generations exemplifies the processes of rabbinization and the creation of archetypal figures. With respect to the first generation, the deliberate erasure of Judas Maccabeus’s name from the tradition of Nicanor’s defeat indicates that they chose to celebrate the Hasmonean victory but concealed its protagonists, the Maccabees, simply because no way was found to bring them into the rabbinic camp.
