Abstract. In the last years, vision-based systems have flourished at an unprecedented pace, fuelled by developments in hardware components (higher resolution and higher sensitivity imaging sensors, smaller and smarter micro controllers, just to name a few), as well as in software or processing techniques, with AI (Artificial Intelligence) leading to a landmark revolution. Several disciplines have fostered and benefited from these advances, but, unfortunately, not always in a coordinated and cooperative way. When it comes to image-based sensing techniques, photogrammetry, computer vision and robotic vision have many contact points and overlapping areas. Yet, as for people of different cultures and languages, communicating among the three different communities can be very harsh and disorienting - especially for beginners and non-specialists.Driven by a strong educational and inclusive ambition, the LightCam project is funded by the ISPRS Education and Capacity Building Initiatives 2020 (ECB). The project’s ambition is to act as an interpreter and ease the dialog among the three actors, i.e. photogrammetry, computer vision and robotics. Two intermediation tools will be developed to serve this aim: (i) a dictionary of concepts, terminology and algorithms, in the form of a knowledge base website, and (ii) a code repository, where pieces of code for the conversion between different formulations implemented in available software solutions will be shared.

Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to science-generating devices with functions like reasoning, thinking, learning, and planning. A robot is an intelligent artificial machine capable of sensing and interacting with its environment utilizing integrated sensors or computer vision. In the present day, AI has become a more familiar presence in robotic resolutions, introducing flexibility and learning capabilities. A robot with AI provides new opportunities for industries to produce work safer, save valuable time, and increase productivity. Economic impact assessment and awareness of the social, legal, and ethical problems of robotics and AI are essential to optimize the advantages of these innovations while minimizing adverse effects. The impact of AI and robots affects healthcare, manufacturing, transport, and jobs in logistics, security, retail, agri-food, and construction. The chapter outlines the vision of AI, robot's timeline, highlighting robot's limitations, hence embedding AI to robotic real-world applications to get an optimized solution.

Emotionally-aware Man-Machine Interaction (MMI) systems are presently at the forefront of interest of the computer vision and artificial intelligence communities, since they give the opportunity to less technology-aware people to use computers more efficiently, overcoming fears and preconceptions. Most emotion-related facial and body gestures are considered to be universal, in the sense that they are recognized along different cultures; therefore, the introduction of an “emotional dictionary” that includes descriptions and perceived meanings of facial expressions and body gestures, so as to help infer the likely emotional state of a specific user, can enhance the affective nature of MMI applications (Picard, 2000).

The paper is intended to provide an overview of advanced robotic technologies within the context of Postal Automation services. The main functional requirements of the application are briefly referred, as well as the state of the art and new emerging solutions. Image Processing and Pattern Recognition have always played a fundamental role in Address Interpretation and Mail sorting and the new challenging objective is now off-line handwritten cursive recognition, in order to be able to handle all kind of addresses in a uniform way. On the other hand, advanced electromechanical and robotic solutions are extremely important to solve the problems of mail storage, transportation and distribution, as well as for material handling and logistics. Finally a short description of new services of Postal Automation is referred, by considering new emerging services of hybrid mail and paper to electronic conversion.

Abstract This work intends to apprehend and emphasize the contribution of image-processing techniques and computer vision in the treatment of clay-based material known in Meknes region. One of the various characteristics used to describe clay in a qualitative manner is porosity, as it is considered one of the properties that with “kill or cure” effectiveness. For this purpose, we use scanning electron microscopy images, as they are considered the most powerful tool for characterising the quality of the microscopic pore structure of porous materials. We present various existing methods of segmentation, as we are interested only in pore regions. The results show good matching between physical estimation and Voronoi diagram-based porosity estimation.

AbstractThe rapid advances in Artificial Intelligence and Robotics will have a profound impact on society as they will interfere with the people and their interactions. Intelligent autonomous robots, independent if they are humanoid/anthropomorphic or not, will have a physical presence, make autonomous decisions, and interact with all stakeholders in the society, in yet unforeseen manners. The symbiosis with such sophisticated robots may lead to a fundamental civilizational shift, with far-reaching effects as philosophical, legal, and societal questions on consciousness, citizenship, rights, and legal entity of robots are raised. The aim of this work is to understand the broad scope of potential issues pertaining to law and society through the investigation of the interplay of law, robots, and society via different angles such as law, social, economic, gender, and ethical perspectives. The results make it evident that in an era of symbiosis with intelligent autonomous robots, the law systems, as well as society, are not prepared for their prevalence. Therefore, it is now the time to start a multi-disciplinary stakeholder discussion and derive the necessary policies, frameworks, and roadmaps for the most eminent issues.

A control program was designed with Unity 5 virtual reality application in the automotive and robotics field. Thus, a virtual model of a robotic car was tested in a virtual reality program. After optimization, the smart controller was implemented on a specific model of the automated Chevrolet Camaro. The main objective of the present paper is to design a control program model to be tested in virtual reality and in a real-size car. Results concerning the virtual modeling of an automated car and its artificial intelligence controls have been presented and discussed, outlining the forces, torques, and context awareness capabilities of the car.
