Background: Preeclampsia is a disease with a variety of theories that describe the uncertainty of the pathophysiology. According to the oxidative stress theory, preeclampsia originates from the failure of trophoblast invasion during the implantation process, causing ischemia and placental hypoxia, which in turn causes cell damage, including placental endothelial cell dysfunction. Omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin E have an important role in preventing preeclampsia. Omega-3 fatty acids play an important role in maintaining cell membranes and anti-inflammatory processes. At the same time, vitamin E acts as a fat-soluble antioxidant that can prevent oxidative stress, inhibit proinflammatory cytokines, and protect fatty acids from oxidation. Aim: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of omega-3 and vitamin E on the level of ROS and NO in pregnant rats with preeclampsia models. Method & Material: This type of research is experimental with Post-Test Only Control Group Design. The sample consisted of 35 pregnant rats, which were divided into five groups. On the 19th day, blood serum was taken to check the levels of ROS and NO. The measuring instrument used is a spectrophotometer with the ELISA method. Data were analyzed using the Shapiro Wilks normality test. After the parametric test was completed, the hypothesis was tested using one-way ANOVA. Results: The average levels of ROS in each group were K- : 121,684 ng/L, K+ : 143,885 ng/L, P1 : 136,250 ng/L, P2 : 132.433 ng/L, and P3 : 122,993 ng/L. The average levels of NO obtained were K-: 29,502 ng/L, K+: 26,053 ng/L, P1: 27,250 ng/L, P2: 27,555 ng/L, and P3: 32,278 ng/L. The results of one-way ANOVA analysis showed that the administration of omega-3 and vitamin E had a significant difference between the control and treatment groups, both at levels of ROS (p=0.001) and levels of NO (p=0.001). Conclusion: The administration of omega-3, vitamin E, and omega-3 plus vitamin E can reduce ROS levels in pregnant rats with preeclampsia models. Abstract. Background: Several studies have investigated the effect of omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin E on oxidative stress and inflammation, but their findings are inconsistent. The aim of this meta-analysis is to elucidate the overall effects of co-supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin E on oxidative stress and inflammation. Methods: We searched titles, abstracts, and keywords of relevant articles indexed in PubMed, ISI, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases up to December 2018 to identify eligible RCT studies. Random effects model was used to estimate the pooled effect of co-supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin E on oxidative stress and inflammation. Results: Overall, 7 RCTs with 504 participants were included in this meta-analysis. We found that co-supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin E decreased hs-CRP (weighed mean difference (WMD) = −2.15 mg/L; 95% CI: −3.40, −0.91 mg/L; P < 0.001) concentrations and increased total antioxidant capacity (TAC) (WMD = 92.87 mmol/L; 95% CI: 31.97, 153.77 mmol/L; P = 0.03), and nitric oxide levels (NO) (WMD: 6.95 μmol/L; 95% CI: 3.86, 10.04, P < 0.001) compared with control group. Omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin E had no significant effect on malondialdehyde (MDA) (WMD: 1.54 mmol/L; 95% CI: −1.29, 4.36; P = 0.196), and glutathione (GSH) (WMD: 20.87 mmol/L; 95% CI: −20.04, 61.6, P = 0.31) levels. Conclusion: The present meta-analysis found that omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin E co-supplementation significantly decreased hs-CRP and increased NO and TAC, although it had no significant effect on MDA and GSH.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is currently the most common form of liver disease in both adults and children, becoming the leading cause for liver transplant in many countries. Its prevalence has increased considerably in recent years, mainly due to the explosive increase in pediatric obesity rates. NAFLD is strongly associated with central obesity, diabetes, dyslipidemia and insulin resistance, and it has been considered as the hepatic manifestation of the metabolic syndrome. Its complex pathophysiology involves a series of metabolic, inflammatory and oxidative stress processes, among others. Given the sharp increase in the prevalence of NAFLD and the lack of an appropriate pharmacological approach, it is crucial to consider the prevention/management of the disease based on lifestyle modifications such as the adoption of a healthy nutrition pattern. Herein, we review the literature and discuss the role of three key nutrients involved in pediatric NAFLD: fructose and its participation in metabolism, Omega-3 fatty acids and its anti-inflammatory effects and vitamin E and its action on oxidative stress.

Abstract Background: The present study aimed to assess the effects of the supplementation consumption of vitamin E and Omega 3 fatty acid on the oxidative stress parameters among workers exposed to high levels of noise in an automobile parts manufacturing plant. Moreover, the effects of the exposure to noise on SOD, total oxidative stress (TAC) and MDA will be investigated. Methods: The participants were deployed into 4 groups (vitamin E (100 mg), Omega 3 fatty acids (180 mg EPA and 120 mg DHA), vitamin E+ Omega 3 and Placebo), as per the double-blind block randomization method. The oxidative stress parameters of the participants were analyzed before and after three month consumption of supplements via enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay method. The level of workers' exposure to noise, was measured according to ISO 9612. Results: Before intervention, mean MDA, SOD and TAC were 27.52 (7.46) nmol/ml, 58.84 (10.44) U/ml and 2.57 (0.67) mM respectively. After intervention, mean MDA, SOD and TAC were 24.57 (7.58) nmol/ml, 63.46 (11.02) U/ml and 2.70 (0.84) mM respectively. The use of supplement Omega 3 fatty acids had a significant decremental effect on MDA levels. The use of vitamin E alongside Omega 3 fatty acids had a significant incremental effect on SOD activity.Conclusion: Noise exposure had a decremental effect on TAC and SOD as well as an incremental effect on MDA, but this was only statistically significant for TAC. It appears that the simultaneous use of vitamin E and Omega 3 fatty acids for three months had a positive effect on the anti-oxidant performance of workers exposed to noise.

Background: Pre-eclampsia has been associated with the increased of placental apoptosis caused by oxidative stress. Omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin E had beneficial function to maintain cell membranes, prevent oxidative stress and inhibit the production of proinflammatory cytokines. The purpose of the study was to determine the effect of omega-3 and vitamin E supplement to BCL-2 and BAX on PE rats model. Methods: This research has been worked out at animal house and Biomedical Laboratory of the Medical Faculty Andalas University. The design of this research was experimental study with post test only control group design. There were 35 pregnant rats were divided into 5 groups. Group K- without treatment, group K+ was given L-NAME, group P1 was given L-NAME + omega-3, group P2 was given L-NAME + vitamin E and group P3 was given L-NAME + omega-3 + vitamin E. The L-NAME dose was 50mg/kg/day, At the 19th day of gestation, the pregnancy was terminated and the placental tissue was collected for examining BCL-2 and BAX levels by using ELISA kit. The data were analyzed by one way ANOVA and post hoc test LSD. Results: The mean levels of BCL-2 in each group were K- =62.49 ng/mg, K+ =50.64 ng/mg, P1 =58.79 ng/mg, P2 =53.70 ng/mg and P3 =70.10 ng/mg. The mean levels of BAX were K- =72.06 ng/mg, K+ =78.61 ng/mg, P1 =73.71 ng/mg, P2 =74.31 ng/mg and P3 =71.63 ng/mg. The analysis results concluded that there were significant differences between omega-3 and vitamin E supplements on BCL-2 levels (p=0.000) and BAX levels (p=0.001). Conclusion: Omega-3 (DHA 120 mg, EPA 180 mg) and vitamin E (α-tocopherol 300 iu) suplement increased BCL-2 level and decreased BAX on pre-eclampsia rats model. Background: Depression contributes to significant disease burden at national and global levels. At the personal and domestic level too, depression leads to poor quality of life, causing a huge socioeconomic impact. In the world, over 300 million people are estimated to have depression and the numbers of depressed persons are only projected to go up.Methods: The forced swim test (FST) is one of the most commonly used animal models for assessment of antidepressant effects in rodents. In the modified version of this test, the rats are forced to swim in a glass tank with no means of escape, inducing a behaviour of immobility, which resembles a state of despair, akin to depression in humans. The rats were divided into 6 groups: 1. control group: treated with distilled water; 2. standard group treated with fluoxetine Hcl (10mg/kg); 3.test-1 group treated with omega-3 FAs (300mg/kg); 4.test-2 group treated with a higher dose of omega-3 FAs (500 mg/kg); 5.test-3 group treated with omega-3 FAs (300mg/kg) and fluoxetine (10mg/kg); and 6.test-4 group treated with omega-3 FAs (500 mg/kg) and fluoxetine (10mg/kg).Results: The independent between-groups ANOVA yielded a statistically highly significant result, F (5, 30) = 9.47, P <0.001. Thus, the null hypothesis of no difference between the means was rejected. To further evaluate the nature of the differences between the means of the six groups, the statically significant ANOVA result was followed by Tukey's honest significant difference post-hoc tests.Conclusions: This study finds that omega 3 fatty acids have intrinsic antidepressant activity, and the combination of fluoxetine and omega 3 fatty acids has significantly more antidepressant effect than fluoxetine alone in the forced swim test done on Wistar rats.

Abstract. Background: Elevated homocysteine levels and malnutrition are frequently detected in hemodialysis patients and are believed to exacerbate cardiovascular comorbidities. Omega-3 fatty acids have been postulated to lower homocysteine levels by up-regulating metabolic enzymes and improving substrate availability for homocysteine degradation. Additionally, it has been suggested that prevention of folate depletion by vitamin E consumption decreases homocysteine levels. However, data on the effect of omega-3 fatty acids and/or vitamin E on homocysteine levels and nutritional status have been inconclusive. Therefore, this study was planned to examine the effect of combined supplementation of fish oil, as a source of omega-3 fatty acids, with wheat germ oil, as a source of vitamin E, on homocysteine and nutritional indices in hemodialysis patients. Methods: This study was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. Forty-six hemodialysis patients were randomly assigned to two equally-sized groups; a supplemented group who received 3000 mg/day of fish oil [1053 mg omega-3 fatty acids] plus 300 mg/day of wheat germ oil [0.765 mg vitamin E], and a matched placebo group who received placebo capsules for 4 months. Serum homocysteine and different nutritional indices were measured before and after the intervention. Results: Twenty patients in each group completed the study. At the end of the study, there were no significant changes in homocysteine levels and in the nutritional indices neither in the supplemented nor in the placebo-control groups (p > 0.05). Conclusions: Fish oil and wheat germ oil combination did not produce significant effects on serum homocysteine levels and nutritional indices of hemodialysis patients.

Direct or pre-emulsified flaxseed oil addition did not affect sensory properties of high omega-3/vitamin E sausages but encapsulation did, negatively.
