This research investigated the changing image of blacks in advertisements in Ebony magazine from late 1950 to late 1980. Content analysis of paired samples from three decades revealed significant differences in the mix of products advertised as well as in the aesthetic qualities of models used in the ads. This research also found that while the Black Revolt of the 1960s “blackened” Ebony's ads, the fair-skinned, Eurocentric model had begun to reassert itself as the somatic norm for Ebony advertising by the late 1980s.

The research was inspired by the beauty of the language used by the speaker called pembayun in the traditional sorong serah ceremony, the bridal application of Sasak people in Lombok. The tradition does happen however, young generations would have neglected the meaning denoted in the languages of the ceremony that contains high values of culture, wisdom and religiously. This study used content analysis and ethnography. Data were collected using observation, interview, documentation, and records. Informants that were the native speakers of Sasak and Sumbawa and have the authority on the traditional ceremony were selected. The results show: (1) aesthetically, the form of language used in the reception is the highest form in the Sasak language, which not all Sasak people are able to understand and use; (2) the aesthetic function of the reception of the swinging language in the sorong serah event is a means to convey the message, religion, custom and morals; and (3) the aesthetic value contained in the pembayun language refer to very high moral values and needs to be known by the public at large.

Aesthetics is a pillar consideration in historic preservation. Yet, purposing aesthetics for historic preservation ends seems to lag behind the opportunities. Utterly subjective, aesthetics poses challenges for the preservation community worldwide to moderate, accommodate, and purpose aesthetics in heritage programs. The challenges revolve around the assessment of aesthetical purposing in three domains. These domains include the community disposition towards accommodating aesthetics (advocacy), the criteria and strategies for assessing the aesthetic value of historic resources (signification), and, the standards for treating historic resources in preservation projects (interpretation). This study, therefore, assesses the trends for purposing aesthetics in historic preservation thought and practice through three platforms: advocating aesthetics, signifying aesthetics, and interpreting aesthetics. The study completed literature content analysis on aesthetics in general and aesthetics in historic preservation in particular. Further, because of the perspective of the study, the works of international and country preservation programs provided information relevant to advocacy, signification, and interpretation of aesthetics that have been refined by classification, comparison, and exemplification methods. Among others, these works include those of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) and the U.S. National Historic Preservation Program in the National Park Service. The study culminated with general and platform-specific conclusions. First, as the three proposed platforms (advocacy, signification, and interpretation) maintain structural and serial relationships, they constitute a relevant and feasible framework for assessing aesthetical purposing. Second, as the aesthetical purposing assessment followed a broad, international perspective, the conclusions of the study are commensurate with the selective scope of information used from international and country preservation programs. Third, the contribution to aesthetical purposing at each of the three platforms can be measure only in general, and at times, subjective terms.

Highlights:

Proposing aesthetical advocacy, aesthetical signification, and aesthetical interpretation as a platform framework to assess the purposing of aesthetics was feasible.

As aesthetical purposing was approached from a broad, international perspective, the conclusions of the study commensurate with the selective scope of information used.

The contribution to aesthetical purposing at each of the three platforms is hard to measure; however, the indications point to uneven contribution.

Abstract Background The popularity of social media continues to have a significant impact in the plastic surgery industry. Understanding the influence of such platforms and recognizing trends, specifically on Instagram, can reveal significant implications for education and marketing. Objectives This study aims to gather updated information on 3 main questions: (1) what plastic surgery-related content is being posted to Instagram; (2) who is posting this content; and (3) what specific hashtags are they using? Methods This study analyzed 22 plastic surgery-related hashtags on Instagram. Content analysis was then used to qualitatively evaluate each of the 9 “top” posts associated with each hashtag (198). Any duplicates or posts not relevant to plastic surgery were excluded. Results A total of 11,516,969 posts utilized the 22 hashtags sampled. Of the top 198 posts, only 168 met final inclusion criteria (after duplicates and posts irrelevant to plastic surgery were excluded). Plastic surgeons eligible for membership in The Aesthetic Society accounted for only 4.17% of top posts (7 posts), whereas non-eligible physicians accounted for 20.8% (35 posts). Twenty-eight surgeons accounted for the top posts (excluding foreign surgeons); however, only 6 were board certified by either the American Board of Plastic Surgeons or The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Conclusions The Aesthetic Society eligible board-certified plastic surgeons are a minority amongst physicians posting top plastic surgery-related content on Instagram.

This research aims at discussing the cultural potency of school and university libraries, and therefore, their contribution to the aesthetic education of users. It is a qualitative research and has as corpus of analysis two libraries in the city of Itajaí, Santa Catarina, Brazil: the Municipal Public and School Library Norberto Cândido Silveira Jr. and the Central and Community Library of the University of Vale do Itajaí. The instruments of data collection were observations recorded in field journals, institutional documents and photographs. The analysis of the data was based on the content analysis procedures, according to Franco (2008). The results indicate that both libraries constitute priority areas for reading and research, and, even with some physical limitations, they explore their spaces to promote coexistence, experience, culture and aesthetic education. Through the analysis, it was possible to identify that the spaces of the libraries point to the trilogy inform, discuss and create, revealing its cultural potency.

This study a) identifies how people describe, characterize, and communicate in written form Extraordinary Architectural Experiences (EAE), and b) expands the traditional qualitative approach to architectural phenomenology by demonstrating a quantitative method to analyze written narratives. Specifically, this study reports on the content analysis of 718 personal accounts of EAEs. Using a deductive, ‘theory-driven’ approach, these narratives were read, coded, and statistically analyzed to identify storyline structure, convincing power, and the relationship between subjective and objective experiential qualities used in the story-telling process. Statistical intercoder agreement tests were conducted to verify the reliability of the interpretations to approach the hard problem of “extraordinary aesthetics” in architecture empirically. The results of this study confirm the aesthetic nature of EAE narratives (and of told experiences) by showing their higher dependence on external objective content (e.g., a building’s features and location) rather than its internal subjective counterpart (e.g., emotions and sensations), which makes them more outwardly focused. The strong interrelationships and intercoder agreement between the thematic realms provide a unique aesthetic construct revealing EAE narratives as memorable, embodied, emotional events mapped by the externally focused content of place, social setting, time, and building features. A majority of EAE narratives were found to possess plot-structure along with significant relationships to objective-subjective content that further grounded their storylines. This study concludes that content analysis provides not only a valid method to understand written narratives about extraordinary architectural experiences quantitatively, but also a view as to how to map the unique nature of aesthetic phenomenology empirically.

Sanai is considered one of the prominent mystic poets in the field of Persian literature. Relying on various concepts and techniques, he has described his ideas and by simplifying the ambiguous categories, he has increased the power of understanding of his audience. "Mountain" is one of the natural elements that has been repeated many times in Divan and Hadiqah al-Haqiqah. Using literary arrays and various forms of imagination, the poet has created new images that are somehow related to the "mountain". In the present article, based on descriptive method and content analysis technique, Sanai illustration techniques have been explored. The most important findings of the research show that the poet, using literary tools and symbolic capacities of the mountain, has succeeded in representing and explaining the moral and educational, mystical and epistemological concepts, romance and in some cases, descriptive application. And has been praised. Among imaginary forms, simile has the highest frequency and exaggeration has been the most frequent literary array. Using the aesthetic capacities of "Mountain", Sanai, in addition to creating pristine literary images, has made his epistemological ideas attractive and objective.
