With the advancement of nanotechnology, there has been fervid research activity on new communication paradigms suitable for new challenging contexts, such as biological systems. Among different approaches, the most considered has been artificial Molecular Communication, where entities such as synthetic molecules, enzymes, hormones, bacteria etc. are functionalized in order to implement information exchange with the surrounding system and with other entities. In this context, it is interesting to analyze specific features that could be exploited for effective communication paradigms. In this paper, we focus on chiral molecules (a.k.a. enantiomers) as novel enablers for a molecular communication paradigm. Chirality is an interesting and appealing feature existing in nature and that can be replicated with strong emphasis in new types of materials, such as metasurfaces and metamaterials. A deep knowledge of chirality features and how chiral molecules interact with each other or with achiral molecules provides insights into designing a new molecular communication technique suitable for biological environments. In this contribution, we will highlight the main applications of chiral molecules and we will present chiral features as the viable way for realizing a nanocommunication system.

By interconnecting nanomachines and forming nanonetworks, the capacities of single nanomachines are expected to be enhanced, as the ensuing information exchange will allow them to cooperate towards a common goal. Nowadays, systems normally use electromagnetic signals to encode, send and receive information, however, in a novel communication paradigm, molecular transceivers, channel models or protocols use molecules. This article presents the current developments in nanomachines along with their future architecture to better understand nanonetwork scenarios in biomedical applications. Furthermore, to highlight the communication needs between nanomachines, two applications for nanonetworks are also presented: i) a new networking paradigm, called the Internet of NanoThings, that allows nanoscale devices to interconnect with existing communication networks, and ii) Molecular Communication, where the propagation of chemical compounds like drug particles, carry out the information exchange.

This chapter provides a brief review of molecular communication, a networking paradigm inspired by cell communication mechanisms. In molecular communication, information is encoded to and decoded from molecules, rather than electrons or electromagnetic waves. Molecular communication provides bio-compatible and energy-efficient solutions with massive parallelization at the nano-to-micro scale; it is expected to play a key role in a multitude of domains including health, the environment, and ICT (Information Communication Technology). Models and methods of molecular communication are also reviewed, and research challenges that need to be addressed for further advancement of the molecular communication paradigm are discussed.

Communication among nurses, patients, and families takes an important role in the intensive care unit in which the patients are in critical condition and unable to involve in two-way communication. Research related to effective nurse-patient communication has been done extensively, but the information regarding communication in intensive care unit is still limited. This research aimed to explore nurses’ experiences in the intensive care units in effective communication to patients/patient’s families. This was a qualitative study project with phenomenology approach. The data were collected using the in-depth interview technique approximately 60 minutes involving ten nurses who were selected using the purposive sampling at Al Islam Hospital Bandung. Data were analysed using the Colaizzi method and the results were presented in themes. Based on the nurses’ experiences, four themes were emerged in this study including (1) Nurses’ dilemma of their professionalism and personal issues/matters, (2) Contextual factor affects selection of nurses' communication technique, (3) Barriers in effective communication; difficulties in accompanying families to accept critical patient conditions, care and treatment procedures in the ICU which were complicated, and misunderstanding between nurse-patient and family (4) Compassion and patience are required in nurse-patient communication in ICU. The complex patient/family conditions in the ICU require nurses to choose the appropriate communication technique accompanied by a sense of compassion and patience. Nurses need to improve their ability to communicate effectively in order to lower the barriers in communicating between nurses-patients/families. Recommendations, training and assistance of effective communication become important for nurses in improving services in the Intensive Care Unit.

Abstract—Interprofessional collaboration is a collaboration in health services between health professionals from diverse backgrounds. One of the most important aspects of collaborative practice in health services is the communication between health professionals. Lack of communication can cause a delay in treatment and medical errors. Ineffective communication can also represent a lack of coordination. SBAR method is an effective communication technique for health professionals. The SBAR method is useful to improve team communication in general, improve communication skills in certain situations, and also helpful during shift handover.
