This study aims to examine the effects of resistance versus complex exercise with the retention of post-activation potentiation (PAP) on vertical jump among volleyball players. A total of 30 volleyball players (mean age = 16.5 ± 1.106 years old) were recruited as participants of this study. The participants were requested to attend two different testing sessions, with two days between each session. Each session had a different exercise routine, namely, resistance and complex. A one-way repeated measure was used to analyse the performance of the vertical jump, while a pairwise comparison was applied to compare the retention of PAP between the resistance and complex exercises. The findings show that there is a significant interaction for both warm-up exercises; [(F(1,29)=1275.57, p=0.000] for resistance exercise and [(F(1,29) = 1456.83, p= 0.000] for complex exercise. The retention analysis for PAP effect also indicates that there is a significant difference between the two warm-up activities in vertical jump performance. In conclusion, this study reveals that both exercises managed to increase PAP among volleyball players. However, complex exercise is suggested to be combined with the warm-up method as it can maintain a longer retention than resistance exercise.

The purpose of this study was to examine the acute effects of a dynamic warm-up including hip mobility exercises on sprint, agility and vertical jump performance. Twenty well trained male collegiate athletes (age = 20 ± 1.1 years; height = 178.3 ± 8.8 m; body weight = 72 ± 5.6 kg) volunteered for the study. All subjects completed two individual testing sessions on two non-consecutive days. On the first trial day, after 15 minutes of a simple dynamic warm-up, 30-m sprint test, Illinois agility test and countermovement jump test were performed at the control condition. On the second trial day addition to dynamic warm-up, subjects performed 6 hip mobility (6 min) exercises before tests. A paired samples t-test revealed a significant difference (p = 0.013) on sprint performance when comparing simple dynamic warm-up with a dynamic warm-up including hip mobility exercises. But no significant difference was found for agility (p = 0.071) and jump performances (p = 0.823). It can, therefore, be concluded that has a significant effect on sprinting performance whereas it has no significant effect on agility and vertical jump performance.

This study aimed to assess the effect of high and low levels of flexibility on key performance indicators of volleyball performance. Eighty-four volleyball players (n=84; mean±SD; decimal age: 16.57±1.51; height (cm): 176.23±8.77; body mass (kg): 66.14±11.79) were selected for the study. The design of the study was cross-sectional and to measure selected variables i.e. agility, lower body muscular power, and acceleration speed; 6×10 m shuttle run, countermovement jump (with arm swing) test and 20 m sprint test (standing start) were used. To measure the flexibility level of the players, sit and reach test was used. Shapiro-Wilk normality test was conducted to check the distribution of data and the Levine test was applied to check homogeneity of the variance in data. Participants were divided into two groups i.e. High Flexibility Group (HFG) and Low Flexibility Group (LFG) using k-means cluster analysis and independent t-test was applied to find the differences between HFG and LFG. The level of significance was set at p < 0.05. Results showed statistically significant difference between HFG and LFG in agility, acceleration speed and lower body muscular power and, based on the results, it was concluded coaches should include flexibility training in the regular training programme. Taekwondo dan Pencak silat merupaka dua contoh cabang olahraga seni bela diri yang saat ini sedang berkembang saat ini. Maka dari itu, tujuan daripada penelitian ini adalah untuk mengukur serta mengetahui korelasi antara performa lompat vertikal dengan sprint 60 meter pada atlet Taekwondo dan Pencak silat. Seluruh peserta, dibagi menjadi dua kelompok berdasarkan kecabangan mereka, yaitu kelompok Taekwondo (TKW), dan kelompok Pencak silat (PKS). Seluruh peserta diwajibkan untuk melakukan pemanasan secara statis dan dinamis selama minimal 15 menit. Setelah sesi pemanasan selesai, kelompok TKW memulai pertama untuk sesi pengukuran anthropometry, lompat vertikal, dan sprint. Kelompok PKS lebih unggul dalam melakukan performa loncatan, yaitu 57,33 (± 7,73) cm dibandingkan dengan kelompok TKW sebesar 55,78 (± 4,30) cm. Sedangkan untuk hasil sprint 60 meter, menunjukkan bahwa terdapat perbedaan yang signifikan antara sprint 60 meter antara kelompok TKW dan PKS (p = 0,007), dimana kelompok PKS (7,94 ± 0,15) detik lebih cepat dibandingkan dengan kelompok TKW (8,48 ± 0,49) detik. Hasil dalam penelitian ini, menunjukkan bahwa terdapat korelasi antara performa lompat vertikal dengan performa sprint 60 meter, pada atlet Takewondo dan Pencak silat.Taekwondo and Pencak silat are two examples of martial arts sports that are currently being developed. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to measure and determine the correlation between vertical jump performance and 60 meter sprints in Taekwondo and Pencak silat athletes. All participants were divided into two groups based on their branches, namely the Taekwondo group (TKW) and the Pencak silat group (PKS). All participants are required to warm up statically and dynamically for at least 15 minutes. After the warm-up session was over, the TKW group started the first session for anthropometry measurement, vertical jump, and sprint. The PKS group was superior in jumping performance, 57.33 (± 7.73) cm compared to the TKW group of 55.78 (± 4.30) cm. As for the results of the 60 meter sprint, it shows that there were a significant difference between the 60 meter sprint between the TKW and PKS groups (p = 0.007), where the PKS group (7.94 ± 0.15) seconds is faster than the TKW group (8, 48 ± 0.49) seconds. The results in this study indicate that there were a correlation between vertical jump performance and 60 meter sprint performance, for Takewondo and Pencak silat athletes.

Jumping and balance are necessary skills for most athletes, and mini-trampoline training has been shown to improve them. Little is known about the acute effect of mini-trampoline jumping on jump performance and dynamic balance. Objectives: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of 6 maximal jumps on a mini-trampoline on countermovement vertical jump (CMVJ) variables and on balance parameters. Methods: Twenty one recreationally trained individuals participated in three testing sessions and were either allocated to a control group (N=10) or a trampoline group (N=11). All the participants performed a dynamic warm up prior to their assessments. Baseline CMVJ and balance assessments were measured. For the jump performance tests, the control group rested for 30s, and the trampoline group performed 6 maximal CMVJs on a mini-trampoline. Immediately following the trampoline jumps or the rest period, participants performed three jump trials. The jumping protocol was repeated every minute up to 5 minutes and balance was reassessed immediately after only. Results: There was no significant interaction of time by group and no group effects in all the jumping parameters, however, there was a significant increase in jump height (p <0.001) post-condition, and a significant decrease in peak power (p= 0.01) at the 4th minute for both groups. There was no significant interaction of time by condition, no time effect and no group effect (p>0.05) on the balance variables. Conclusion: These results do not support our hypothesis and show that trampoline jumping does not improve jump and balance performance acutely.

The aim of this study is to examine the acute effects of different stretching methods on jump performance of volleyball players. 11 female volleyball players (age: 24.36 ± 5.10 years; height: 177.81 ± 7.30 cm; weight: 68.17 ± 11.69 kg; body mass index (BMI): 21.46 ± 2.56 kg.m-2; sports age: 12.72 ± 5.31 years) have participated voluntarily in this study. The players have applied three different stretching protocols such as control (no stretching), static and dynamic stretching on non-consecutive days. The protocols have included 5 minutes general warm-up, 1 minute rest, 30-second stretch program for each muscle group (control group not included), 1 minute rest and countermovement jump (CMJ), squat jump (SJ) and standing long jump (SLJ) tests. Friedman analysis has been used for data analysis. Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test has been implemented in order to determine the difference among groups. At the end of the study, a significant difference has been found between control and dynamic stretching groups with regard to static stretching groups in view of CMJ and SJ performance findings (p <0.05). It has been found that there is a statistically significant difference in the test averages of dynamic stretching group compared to static stretching group in view of SLJ performance findings (p <0.05). This study shows that static stretching practices reduce the jumping performance of the players. As a result, it can be suggested that trainers should use dynamic stretching methods before the trainings on jumping properties containing explosive movements.

Research background. Stretching is believed to enhance performance, reduce injury, and be an effective means of developing flexibility and alleviating muscular soreness (Shellock, Prentice, 1985; Brandy et al., 1997). A review of the current literature shows that the results of many studies conflict with others; some report that static stretching diminishes vertical jum (VJ) performance (Cornwell et al., 2001; McNeal, Sands, 2003; Wallmann et al., 2005), whereas others report that static stretching has no effect at all on VJ (Church et al., 2001; Power et al., 2004; Unick et al., 2005). Research aim, was to examine the effects of different durations of stretching on performance and to find the stretching durations that affect the performance negatively or positively. Research methods. The subjects of the study were 27 rhythmic gymnasts with the mean age of 10.00 ± 1.2 years. The subjects as a whole group participated in two different stretching programs on nonconsecutive days to eliminate the effect of individual differences on the performance. On the first day, athletes were asked to warm up by 5 minute jogging after the pretest was administered. The posttest measured the vertical jump performance after athletes stayed inactive for 20 minutes. They rested for a day and on the third day, their performance was measured again. After the 5 minute warm-up period, 10 repetitions of 15 seconds static stretching exercises for hip flexor, hamstring and gastrocnemius muscle groups were followed by the posttest. Moreover, on the fifth day 30-second exercises were repeated five times on the same type of muscles. The participants in this investigation were tested in individual vertical jump performances following warm-up only, warm-up plus 15 seconds static stretching, and warm-up plus 30 seconds. Research results. Results of a one-way repeated-measures ANOVA indicated a nonsignificant difference for vertical jump performance (F = 2.052; p > 0.05). Discussion and conclusions. Stretching exercises are referred in rhythmic gymnastics more intensively than other sports. Relevant literature displays fewer stretching repetitions and durations. These durations and repetitions may not be realistic and practical for rhythmic gymnasts. Therefore, the durations and repetitions utilized in this study are considered more appropriate for rhythmic gymnastics trainings. Rhythmic gymnasts may make use of duration and repetitions determined in this study that will not affect their performance.Keywords: anaerobic power, gymnastics, exercise.
