Does true faith rely on anything external?

Chapter 4 examines the ways in which several masters recast the certitude of faith as a private intellectual illumination, similar to that of the first principles assumed by Aristotle. They strongly contrasted this to the weak faith that relies on authorities and is rooted in the ecclesiastical power structure, while simultaneously aiming to strengthen the scientific image of theology and its distinction from simple belief. It considers the place of relying upon one’s judgment and another’s authority in the context of the transformation of charismatic school culture into the institution of the university and then the complex problem of relying on oneself or on another’s words in the context of heresy.

Weigel was speaking to a group of young graduate students at a time when the North American University had not yet inaugurated its headlong flight into professional programs of every description and at every level of instruction. If memory serves this reviewer correctly, his argument was that the university was properly the place of intellectual endeavour that was prepared to re-examine the first principles of the various disciplines. Professional schools, on the other hand, existed to provide agreed-upon intellectual resources in order to function in practical settings

This study investigated the desegregation of Mississippi State University varsity football, focusing on newspaper coverage of the first Black players at the university, Robert Bell and Frank Dowsing. Two hundred and three articles about Bell and Dowsing from three newspapers (Starkville Daily News, Mississippi State Reflector, and Jackson Clarion-Ledger) were examined using a three-tiered qualitative analysis. Data analysis resulted in 426 frame instances and 686 theme instances, or a total of 1,112 codes. The resulting data were interpreted using Critical Race Theory (CRT) as an analytical lens to generate understanding of the desegregation of the football program. The CRT-guided interpretation challenges popular narratives about the amicable nature of desegregation at the university, indicating that the football team and the careers of Bell and Dowsing were covered in a way that promoted colorblindness and supported the Whitecentric interests of the university’s and community’s dominant power structure.

The overconsolidated soils and soft rocks which form a large proportion of foundation materials in Western Canada typically have a substantial component of their total deformation of an immediate (time independent) nature. This makes them particularly suitable for application of pressuremeter testing when deformation characteristics are sought for settlement or heave analysis. The presented study is a continuation of work on pressuremeter testing carried out at the University of Alberta systematically since 1971 with a view to developing a pragmatic approach to a complex problem of foundation deformation analysis.Described in detail are pressuremeter testings on three sites in Western Canada where documented case histories of deformation behavior were available. The first case history analysed was a settlement of Mount Blackstrap near Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, which is a man-made ski hill founded on very deep till strata. The second case was the settlement of concrete silos in Calgary, Alberta, founded on a layer of dense, coarse gravel. The third study was concerned with an analysis of a load test on a bored pile embedded in Cretaceous bedrock at the Calgary Airport. At all three sites the pressuremeter derived moduli were used in back-analysis of foundation behavior and the results were compared with previously recorded field data. An agreement between the back-analysis and field data in some cases and discrepancies in others indicate the limitations of this approach to pressuremeter testing in these types of foundation materials. The results are discussed and conclusions are drawn on the basis of these as well as the previously studied case histories.

In this article we report on research-in-progress. A number of bright black youths are currently studying at the University of Pretoria, thriving in a project that seeks to address the challenges faced by so many children from South Africa who daily face adverse conditions in their struggle to gain education so that they can earn a decent living and contribute to the development of the country. Our article contemplates the multilayered challenges at a South African university signified by diversity. Our hope is to contribute to the current debate on developing a counselling mode giving recognition to social groups belonging to the middle and low ends of society's power structure — especially as played out in the domain of education and psychology.

It analyzes the trajectory of this School relating it to the educational policies for high school, focusing on the subjects Philosophy, Sociology, History and Geography and, in the debate around the National Base Common Curriculum (2018), which removes the status of school discipline by calling them "practices and studies" and dilutes them in the formative itinerary of "applied human and social sciences". The theoretical-methodological assumption is the cultural history  and makes use of bibliographical and documentary research, helping us from guiding categories such as the school culture, school cultures, cultural capital and school subjects, as well as Maranhão educational historiography, to situate our object under discussion; This is a place where we can see a historical panorama of resistance of those who have struggled for a unified high school, with a comprehensive curriculum focused on integral formation. Keywords: Application Gymnasiums and Schools. In his series of three lectures delivered at King’s College, Newcastle, part of the University of Durham, in February 1943 and published the following year under the title The Abolition of Man; or, Reflections on Education with Special Reference to the Teaching of English in the Upper Forms of Schools, C.S. Lewis passionately argues for the preservation or reinstatement of “the sole source of all value judgements”, represented, in his opinion, by “traditional values”, that he calls “for convenience the Tao, and which others may call Natural Law or Traditional Morality or the First Principles of Practical Reason or the First Platitudes.” This article looks a little closer at the specific meaning of the Tao selected (and then adapted) by C.S. Lewis from a rather complex and fluid philosophical paradigm informed by two contrasting (Taoist and Confucian, respectively) schools of thought.

The studies for Recent Crustal Movements by the aid of space geodesy techniques are integrated into the researches on the Earth’s crust dynamics, as a reflection of the complex geodynamic phenomena that occur in the crust and in the subcrustal lithosphere. In addition to the fundamental nature, the research in this field presents a practical characteristic, competing alongside geology and geophysics to the shaping of new energy sources or solid mineral substances, to the determination of the soil stability degree in inhabited areas or in those in which large industrial targets and utilities are intended to be placed in. The knowledge of movements affecting the Earth’s upper crust, movements that precede, accompany or follow the earthquakes, is also a topical issue. The paper presents some of the most important research projects developed in Romania, which were based on the measurement data obtained exclusively by space geodesy methods. There are presented some of the most significant results achieved in the framework of each research project together with the limitations imposed by the used acquisition technology. In chronological order are mentioned first GPS measurements in Romania, started in 1994, in a network centered on the Dealul Piscului observatory, followed by Romania's involvement in a regional geodynamic project, CERGOP and finally a major international project, CRC461, also continued after 2003 with the continuous help of the University of Delft (Nederland), a project that led to the development of an extended network of GPS permanent stations in Romania, all in operating status and whose results are a valuable support for the geodynamic studies. There are made brief references to the first application of the Finite Element Method in a GPS subnet from the Vrancea extended network together with some of the most important obtained results. The strong earthquakes with their catastrophic consequences, which have taken place in recent years on a global scale, similar to that of 4 March 1977 in Romania, have fully demonstrated the need for the knowledge of these types of crust movements in order to contribute, together with other methods, to solve the very complex problem of the earthquake forecasting.
