Interactive video technology (IVT) remains one of the common modes of teaching utilised by various higher education institutions (HEIs) across the globe with an aim of catering to ever-increasing educational demands. The objectives of this study were to explore and describe the experiences of nursing students on the use of IVT as a mode of teaching General Nursing Science with a view to describing the aspects that affect their learning. The study was conducted at one of the satellite campuses of an HEI located in north-eastern Namibia. In this study, a qualitative, exploratory and descriptive design was used. A total of fifteen nursing students from the Faculty of Health Sciences in the School of Nursing, purposively selected from the population of fourth-year nursing students who were taught via IVT, participated in the study. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews and analysed by means of content analysis. Three main themes subsequently emerged: nursing students experienced the IVT as a beneficial mode of teaching; the use of IVT as a mode of teaching resulted in certain negative experiences for nursing students; and the presence of certain strategies that strengthen IVT as a teaching mode. The study identified both positive and negative student experiences resulting from the use IVT as a mode of teaching. It was therefore concluded that the School of Nursing should continue to use IVT as a mode of teaching, but should put certain interventions in place to strengthen it and to make the learning environment more favourable for students.

ABSTRACTObjective: to understand the level of awareness related to donation of organs and tissues of nursing students in a Higher Education Institution of Goiás Method: a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were collected during March and April 2010, through semi-structured interviews with 20 students of nursing, which conformed to the criteria for inclusion. The data were analyzed according to Bardin technique. The research project was approved by the Ethics and Research (CEP) UniEvangélica. Results: the study showed little knowledge about the basic parameters for a professional approach on the part of academics. Among the factors favorable to giving the highlight was the purpose of saving lives. In relation to religion appeared unfavorable factors, lack of knowledge and credibility with regard to organ procurement program. Conclusion: given the importance of nursing staff in providing appropriate assistance from family, and with respect to the proper management of the potential donor is of utmost importance that these future professionals to have adequate knowledge and quality in their training. Já em relação aos fatores desfavoráveis apareceu religião, falta de conhecimento e credibilidade no que diz respeito ao programa de captação de órgãos. Conclusão: diante da importância da equipe de enfermagem na prestação de assistência adequada junto a família, e com relação ao manejo adequado do potencial doador, é de total relevância que estes futuros profissionais tenham conhecimento adequado e de qualidade em sua formação. Resultados: el estudio demostró poco conocimiento acerca de los parámetros básicos de un enfoque profesional por parte de los académicos. Entre los factores favorables a dar el punto culminante fue el propósito de salvar vidas. En relación con la religión apareció factores desfavorables, la falta de conocimiento y credibilidad en lo que respecta al programa de obtención de órganos. Conclusión: dada la importancia del personal de enfermería en la prestación de asesoramiento de la familia, y con respecto a la gestión adecuada del donante potencial es de suma importancia que estos futuros profesionales para tener un conocimiento adecuado y la calidad en su formación. PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to describe the role and characteristics of the summer internship program (Digital Summer Clinic) delivered by Eastern Michigan University. The authors report the results of an exploratory study of interns participating in the Digital Summer Clinic over a five-year time period. The study captures and analyzes the experiences of interns as expressed in structured interviews and blog posts.Design/methodology/approachThe study data were text from structured interviews and blog posts capturing the “voice” of the interns. A natural language processing (NLP) analysis of the text corpus, consisting of 43 interviews and blog posts, resulted in the identification of 242 unique stem-terms used by interns in describing the internship experiences. The authors used the JMP Pro 15.2 Text Explorer algorithm (It is defined as a suite of computer programs for statistical analysis developed by the JMP business unit of SAS Institute) to extract the terms that were subsequently transformed and analyzed with factor analysis and regression to address the research questions.FindingsThe factor analysis results found six dimensions or themes, defined by the stem-terms used by student interns, best described the internship experience. The authors then explored the relationship between the six themes and the umbrella term “internship” with multiple regression analysis. The regression findings suggest a hierarchy of effects with the theme “Introducing Professional Opportunities” being the theme most predictive of the umbrella term.Originality/valueThe methodology used within the paper is unique in several ways when compared to other research investigating internship programs. First, it uses NLP analysis for the qualitative analysis of text-based descriptions of student experiences over a five-year time horizon. Second, the data analysis uses transformed text to quantitatively determine the major dimensions or themes expressed by the interns about their experiences in the Summer Clinic program. Finally, the relative importance of the themes identified provided direction for future program development.

Quality of nurse training programs requires clinical evaluation. The purpose of this study was to achieve a perspective of realities from viewpoint of nursing students during their internship and clerkship. This study was descriptive and quantitative; 180 nurse inters and nursing unit clerks were enrolled for the study. Data was collected using a researcher made questionnaire. Content validity of the questionnaire was confirmed by a group of faculty members and clinical professors; reliability of the questionnaire was confirmed by Cronbach's alpha (0.89). The questionnaire consisted of two parts; demographic data and data related to clinical evaluation in four areas including content of evaluation, the role of instructor in evaluation, evaluation process and outcome of evaluation. The questionnaire was scored on a five-point Likert scale from always to never. At the end, there were two open questions about suggestions on clinical evaluation. Data were analyzed by SPSS22, descriptive and analytic statistics. Results showed that nurse interns evaluated the instructor as good (4.05 ± 0.06), evaluation content as average (3.65 ± 0.06), evaluation process as average (2.77 ± 0.76) and outcome of evaluation as poor (2.41 ± 0.69). Nursing unit clerks evaluated the instructor as good (3.84 ± 0.59), evaluation content as average (3.51 ± 0.68), evaluation process as average (2.60 ± 0.78) and outcome of evaluation as poor (2.56 ± 0.63). According to the results, quality of clinical evaluation of nursing students requires a review in existing processes and tools, as well as revision in programs and clinical evaluations by planners and instructors.

Objective: to learn about the social representation of nursing students about the sexuality of elders with dementia. Methods: qualitative study, based on the Theory of Social Representations, developed with 20 Nursing Graduation students from a Brazilian higher education institution. Data was collected through a focal group, processed in the software IRAMUTEQ and analyzed using a Descending Hierarchical Classification. Results: four semantic classes emerged: Sexuality as a right, The theme was insufficient in graduation, Meanings attributed to sexuality, and Care from the perspective of students. Conclusion: the study showed that the nursing students investigated had polysemic representations about the sexuality of elders with dementia, among which discriminatory and stigmatizing conceptions stood out, socially constructed and anchored in common sense.

WhatsApp is the most popular networking site used by most university students for general purposes, and as a communication, collaborative and transactional tool in the teaching and learning process. However, experiences of its use among university students as an educational communication tool in low and resource-constrained settings have not been explored. Following a qualitative, descriptive, phenomenology approach, this study described and explored nursing students’ experiences of the use of WhatsApp as an educational communication tool. Data were collected from 24 university nursing students who were conveniently sampled to participate in the focus group discussions; thereafter, data were analysed using qualitative content analysis. Whittemore, Chase and Mandle’s primary criteria of validity in qualitative research, which include credibility, authenticity, criticality and integrity, were used to ensure the quality of the study. Ethical approval and permission were granted by the School of Nursing Research Ethics Committee. Informed consent was obtained from participants, and their anonymity and confidentiality were ensured. The findings revealed that WhatsApp is a beneficial communication tool but has effects on human behaviour. Moreover, connectivity and handset-related challenges were experienced by the students. Following these findings, it is concluded that WhatsApp is a suitable communication tool in higher education and in maintaining communities of practice among students and lecturers. Conversely, there is a need to educate students on mechanisms to mitigate its negative effects on human behaviours, such as disturbances, addiction, and lack of responses. Lastly, universities should consider partnering with network providers to improve connectivity among students and lecturers, as well as accessibility to affordable smartphones.

ABSTRACT Objective: To understand technical nursing students' meaning of interacting with family members of hospitalized children. Method: Symbolic Interactionism was used as the theoretical framework and Qualitative Content Analysis was the methodological procedure. A total of eight graduates from an institution situated in the city of Osasco, Sao Paulo state, participated in this study. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews. Results: A total of five representative themes were revealed: Dealing with difficult situations with family members; Perceiving oneself to be unprepared to interact with family members; Family members being a helpful tool; Developing strategies to obtain a good interaction with family members; and Teachers being facilitators of the interaction with family members. Final considerations: To be acquainted with this experience has led to the understanding of the need to include the theme of family care in the curriculum of the Technical Nursing Course. Additionally, the present study contributed to reflections on the importance of such knowledge for this population and to the development of future studies, as this theme has been scarcely explored in the literature.

Research background: At the beginning of the year 2020, there was a shift in strategies and instruments in a short period of time, to respond to a situation of impossibility of face-to-face teaching. Thus, it is essential to reflect on an educational challenge, whose impacts continue on a global scale. Purpose of the article: The present article aims to analyse how the pandemic situation has been influencing education and learning in Higher Education. Methods: Having as context a higher education institution located in the municipality of Porto, a case study was developed that analysed teaching and learning methodologies applied throughout the 2019/20 academic year. For this research, a qualitative methodology was used, with semi-structured interviews with five teachers and opinion essays from nine students, with fourteen participants. The analysis was carried out using the Nvivo software, triangulating the perceptions of the two groups of interviewees. Findings & Value added: The results allow us to conclude that the participants are aware that collaborative work and the use of appropriate technological resources were essential to ensure teaching and distance learning, including the evaluation process, despite mandatory confinement. Globally, the perceptions of the emergence of a new educational paradigm are confirmed, based on the massive use of technological resources, which propelled the innovation of the teaching and learning process. Nevertheless, both groups recognize that distance learning impoverishes the fundamental interpersonal dynamics in Higher Education.

Faced with a growing number of international opportunities, the Lienhard School of Nursing at Pace University adapted a business model to assess which opportunities to pursue. Employing a product portfolio matrix approach, the International Opportunities Assessment (IOA) Tool was developed to assess new international ventures using the parameters of Market Attractiveness and Institutional Resources. The tool was piloted on a study abroad nursing course featuring a trip to Iceland. The tool assisted in prioritizing program development for international opportunities.  In this article, we will describe the development of this tool and, in order to demonstrate its use, we will provide an example of its application in the assessment of a study abroad course for nursing students at the Lienhard School of Nursing, Pace University.

The United States immigration policy Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) which protects some individuals from deportation was enacted in 2012, phased out in 2017 and is now under court challenges. There are still thousands of DACA students currently in higher education. The article highlights promising practices that professors and universities can put in place to support DACA students in the United States. Several semi-structured interviews were conducted with DACA students and Dream Center Directors in California universities to gauge students’ barriers and bridges to their higher education success. DACA students articulated public policy suggestions that universities and professors can immediately enact and have tangible results. Three themes were revealed in the interview data: the need for teacher knowledge, diversity of DACA student experiences, and for actions. These were explained as (1) knowledge of student’s lives, and, conversely, students’ access to information necessary for navigating college life; (2) the diversity of students’ life stories and experiences of trauma suffered during and after DACA rescinding decision; and (3) actions that should be taken by the faculty, staff, and the university community that would help students succeed academically.
