The Notation of the 20th and 21st Century Choral Music

The Avant garde schools required a notation style different from the traditional one both in instrumental and vocal music. This study points to the historical background of contemporary notation and the interdependence of the graphic representation of sound and notation. The illustrations are primarily quotes selected from the Hungarian choir literature and further material is used to introduce the authentic elements used for modes of expression. "Upon dealing with Russian religious choral music of the 18th century, one may clearly recognize the outlines of a unique genre, the duhovny kontsert, or in other words, the genre of the religious choral concerto. The subject is suppletory, since very few people in Hungary have dealt with pre-19th century Russian music, let alone with choral repertoire. In the present study, we may follow up the legalization and development of polyphony in church music – which was strictly monophonic up until the 1500s – and the different types of multivocal hymns. We will also get to know the Russian composers of the 17th and 18th centuries, who contributed to the genre with their own works. We will receive a detailed description about concertante techniques used in European vocal music, and about their appearance in the 18th century Russia, which was unique to a cappella choral concerto. We will also get to know more about the structure and characteristics of the duhovny kontsert, while taking a glance at the historical background. In the final part of the study, we will see how the genre influenced subsequent eras, and how the stylistic marks and techniques appear in the choral oeuvre of Rachmaninoff. The purpose of the article. The paper describes the contemporary vocal pedagogical repertoire from the standpoint of its representativeness in relation to musical trends of the 20th – early 21st century. The methodology is based on a combination of historical, cultural, systemic, analytical, predictive methods, which made it possible to demonstrate the limited educational repertoire of vocalists, respectively, with didactic tasks and potential openness to expand its genre and style palette in connection with the need to train a universal academic singer. The scientific novelty of the paper lies in the fact that in Ukrainian science for the first time the problematic issues of the content of the pedagogical repertoire of academic vocalists in the context of the genre and style diversity of vocal music of the 20th – early 21st centuries were revealed. Conclusions. The contemporary pedagogical repertoire used in the preparation of academic vocalists does not reflect the stylistic and genre diversity of the musical art of the 20th – early 21st centuries, in particular, it does not contain avant-garde compositions, which have long been a constant of contemporary musical culture. Practical acquaintance with avant-garde classics is possible as part of an elective for those vocalists who plan to specialize in this direction of academic music, however, the pedagogical repertoire of training an academic vocalist does not provide for the performance of works of an avant-garde character and the acquisition of appropriate skills. The reasons for the inexpediency of including avant-garde music of the 20th – early 21st century in the main educational repertoire is the absence of a temporal distance, not always a high artistic level of contemporary works, the impossibility of including contemporary vocal music of an avant-garde character in the anthology due to the peculiarities of its notation and forms of existence, as well as the priority for the educational process of the classical vocal repertoire as such that forms the vocalist’s executive apparatus. At the same time, Ukrainian variety classics of the 20th century is an integral part of the educational repertoire of a contemporary academic vocalist, as it serves as a bridge between elite and popular musical culture.

The second half of the 20th century in Bosnian literature is marked by the new tendencies of avant-garde writers, who will create their work through a different form of artistic creation, compared to the one that was presented at the beginning of this period. It is important to clarify the specificity of the various procedures that have positively directed dramatic creativity towards the modern lines of European literary circles. Derviš Sušić (1925-1990.), the Bosnian-Herzegovinian tradition and the reality of images, presented in a completely new artistic vision, make oscillation, in the writer's creation, between the determinants of historical facts and the legacy of oral tradition. Derviš Sušić Within the avant-garde tendencies of contemporary writers of the regional region, which appear in the mid-20th century, Sušić dominates in his virtuous creations of dramatic situations and dilemmas, in which his protagonists act. In a specific presentation of crucial culmination points, within the framework of the process of "drama of the flow of consciousness," a modern process in the conduct of drama, this writer analytically approaches the individual's dialectical duplication. Through artistically shaped fragments taken from historical records, this literary virtuoso presents in his texts a culmination point of Bosnian survival, very picturesque dramatic shaped historical characters and crucial events. It is symptomatic that Susić's characters become prototypes of stage characters, without temporal or location restrictions, transmitting a universal message of a unique attitude about the value of human activity and existence, outperform stereotypical models recognizable in the additional drama literature. Through the colorful of seeing and a range of specific dramatic characters, without the diversity of their differentiation in national status or sociopolitical affiliation, this writer creates a special ambient effect in the construction of his poetic fabrics based on historical background. The task of this paper is to prove the causality and conditionality of altruistic (social) and egoistic (individual) agonies in the actions and actions of Sušić's characters, in the examples of dramatic texts "Veliki vezir" (1969) and "Posljednja ljubav Hasana Kaimija "(1973), as well as the influence of emotional indicators on the concrete initiation of the dramatic conflict. It is therefore very interesting to explore and verify the models that will dominantly dominate the regional scene for almost half a century and be accepted as models in the way of writing its contemporaries, among the readers' population, but also at the same time with very successful placement in the theater audience.

Vasyl Bezkorovayny (1880–1966) was a talented artist, an active figure in the musical life of Galicia and a representative of post-war Ukrainian emigrants in the United States of America. He wrote more than 350 works of various genres. Among them are compositions for symphony orchestra; vocal works — for chorus, ensembles or solo singing; chamber and instrumental music — for piano, violin, zither, cello; music for dramatic performances. The article deals with the archival and musicological analysis of expressive and stylistic features of V. Bezkorovayny’s vocal works, based on the materials of Stefanyk Lviv National Library of Ukraine. Attention is paid to the place of the composer’s vocal masterpieces in the context of Ukrainian vocal music of the first half of the XX century. The most important achievements of the composer related to the genres of choral and chamber vocal music. In style, the composer’s works combine the influences of M. Lysenko, composers of the «Peremyshl school» and Western European romantic and post-romantic models. The original secular choral music of V. Bezkorovayny covers genres of songs, plays, and large-form choirs. In his solo songs the influences of romantic western European music and Ukrainian folk songs affected the formation and approval of the composer’s style. Abstract Protestant music in South Korea has received little attention in ethnomusicology despite the fact that Protestant Christianity was one of the most popular religions in twentieth-century Korea. This has meant a missed opportunity to consider the musical impact of a religious institution that mediated translocal experiences between South Korea and the United States during the Cold War period (1950s–1980s). This article explores the politics of music style in South Korean diasporic churches through an ethnography of a church choir in California. I document these singers’ preference for European-style choral music over neotraditional pieces that incorporate the aesthetics of suffering from certain Korean traditional genres. I argue that their musical judgement must be understood in the context of their lived and remembered experience of power inequalities between the United States and South Korea. Based on my interviews with the singers, I show that they understand hymns and related Euro-American genres as healing practices that helped them overcome a difficult past and hear traditional vocal music as sonic icons of Korea's sad past. The article outlines a pervasive South Korean/Korean diasporic historical consciousness that challenges easy conceptions of identity and agency in music studies.

The historic preconditions of the lodging sites development are analyzed. The historic periods in the hotel sphere development are described. The main factors that lead to the formation and development of the hotel establishments are singled out. The development of services, quality of service, features of hotels architectural planning is characterized. The historic references on the first hotels in Lviv are submitted. The development of accommodation facilities in different time periods is traced. The influence of the historical background on the development of hotel infrastructure is analyzed. The recommendations on the future development of hotel infrastructure in Lviv are worked out. Key words: lodging, accommodation, lodging services.

Povzetek V prispevku predstavljamo znanstvena in aplikativna spoznanja pomembnih teoretikov in avtorjev 19., 20. in 21. stoletja s področij teorije strategije, teorije in filozofije vojne in vojskovanja ter vojaške zgodovine, ki so pripomogli k prepoznavanju in utrjevanju pomena obrambnega planiranja (Carl von Clausewitz, Liddell Hart, Bernard Brodie, Colin S. Gray, Harry R. Yarger, Williamson Murray in drugi). Na podlagi analize njihovih teoretičnih spoznanj proučujemo nujnost razvijanja strateške misli v obrambnem planiranju in nujnost obstoja obrambnega planiranja. Ta je v sodobnem svetu prepoznan kot eden od najučinkovitejših instrumentov države pri zagotavljanju njenih obrambnih potreb in obvladovanju negotove prihodnosti nacionalne varnosti. Ključne besede: politika, strategija, obrambno planiranje. Abstract The article presents scientific and applicative findings of important 19th, 20th and 21st century theoreticians and authors in the field of strategy theory, war and warfare theory and philosophy, and military history, who have contributed to the acknowledgment and reinforced importance of defence planning (Carl von Clausewitz, Liddell Hart, Bernard Brodie, Colin S. Gray, Harry R. Yarger, Williamson Murray et al.). On the basis of the analysis of their theoretical findings, we examine the urgency of developing a strategic thought in defence planning and the urgency of its existence. In the contemporary settings, defence planning is recognised as one of the most effective national instruments in the support of its defence needs and management of national security’s uncertain future. Chronicling the Commune’s returns across a surprisingly vast and visually striking archive of periodical poems and illustrations, panoramic spectacles, children’s adventure fiction, popular and canonical novels, political pamphlets, avant-garde theater productions, and radical pulp, this book argues that the Commune became, for writers and readers across virtually all classes and political persuasions, a critical locus for re-occupying both radical and mainstream memory of revolution and empire, a key site for negotiating post-bellum gender trouble and regional reconciliation, and a vital terrain for rethinking Paris—and what it meant to be an American there—in U.S. fiction and culture. For Americans felt Paris to be curiously their own long before the Moderns made it their hometown. This introductory chapter explores the key words at the heart of the book, and offers a taste of its material terrain. It concludes with an overview of its subsequent chapters.
