Understanding how the academic performance of first year undergraduate students is influenced by home, personal and institutional factors is fundamental to delineate policies able to mitigate failure. This paper investigates possible correlations between the academic performance of students at the end of high school with their achievements at the end of first year university. Data for students in the Integrated Master in Mechanical Engineering (MIEM) program within the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Porto are analysed for the period 2016/2017 to 2019/2020. The students’ performance is measured by two metrics and the students are structured as a whole and by groups, according to their gender (Male/Female), type of secondary school (Public/Private), living place (Away/Home) and the rank of MIEM in their application list of options (Option 1/Option 2–6). The information is organized statistically and possible correlations between the data are investigated. The analysis reveals limited correlation between the two metrics, meaning that all students may exhibit good or poor results at the end of first year in MIEM, independent of their status at entrance. An unanticipated pattern is exhibited for the group Option 2–6, since it shows that, despite entering into MIEM without top application marks, the students in this group can perform as well as the others. This behavior is consistent over time.

The present study investigated the relationships between the three factors of Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and entrepreneurial intention among students from the Technical Secondary School in Malaysia. This study utilized the survey (questionnaire) method. A total of 163 respondents which consisted of the Year 4 students from one of the Technical Secondary School in Northern Region of Malaysia were selected to participate in this study. The findings presented that students in this institution have a high level of entrepreneurial intention (mean=3.89). Also, results presented that subjective norm is the only factor that significantly related to entrepreneurial intention (β=.331, p=.000). Meanwhile, other factors such as attitude towards behavior (β=.064, p=.474) and self-efficacy (β=.070, p=.438) are not significantly related to entrepreneurial intention. Thus, it is found that only one factor of TPB which is subjective norm has a significant relationship with entrepreneurial intention among students in this Technical Secondary School. This study contributed some fruitful knowledge which can be suggested to all Technical Secondary Schools to improve the level of students’ entrepreneurial intention, particularly in the Malaysian context. Implications of the results are discussed; and future research direction are briefly provided.

The article presents the results of a survey (concerning the reading experience of the canon) conducted among students of four first grades of secondary school (one grade of high school divided into elementary and advanced levels, and three classes of technical secondary school). The research was part of the initial diagnosis of the first and second year of graduates of the reformed primary school at the threshold of secondary school (in 2019/2020 and 2020/2021). Students declared reading compulsory reading books in grades 7–8 of primary school according to the scale: I have read all / excerpts / abstract / not at all / don’t remember. The results show not only the respondents’ reading preferences, but also their specific strategies of “acquiring” the content of the obligatory texts and their attitude towards compulsory reading in general. They also allow to pose questions about the literary competences of the graduates of the reformed elementary school at the start of the next stage of education. Scientific studies in the field of reading were used as a context, including the latest results of surveys among teachers on reading books by elementary school students prepared by Gdańskie Wydawnictwo Oświatowe (2020).

The observations made by Pavel Olexík in 1848 are accepted as the beginning of standardised meteorological measurements in Brno. Three times every day, from September 1861 to December 1867, Professor Alexander Zawadzki, a teacher of physics and botany at a Brno technical secondary school, kept recording the values of air pressure, air temperature, precipitation, wind and atmospheric phenomena. His observation diary also includes phenological data and information about meteorological and other natural events across the Czech Lands and Europe. Because there is neither a great distance nor difference in altitude between the places in which Zawadzki and Olexík made their observations, the pressure and temperature readings show only negligible divergences. The differences are not significant for wind direction, precipitation totals and days with rain and snow, but they are greater for atmospheric phenomena. The contemporary meteorological activities of Gregor Johann Mendel also vastly contributed to Brno becoming an important centre of meteorology in the eastern part of the Czech Lands in the 1860s.
