The paper presents the methodology and implementation of original Automatic CAM programming using machining templates (ACPUT) dedicated to manufacturing special technological tooling. The development of ACPUT was inspired by the observation that although modern computer-aided design (CAD) / computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) systems can automatically create CAM programs, their universality makes them both difficult to use and inefficient because the programs created this way often contain errors. The presented programming procedure includes the development of specific machining templates based on technological knowledge gathered in a specially prepared database. These templates are dedicated to a group of parts characterized by the similarity of their geometric features. ACPUT makes it possible to reduce(in comparison to traditional CAM programming) the time required to develop a machining program, thereby positively impacting the total cost of tooling production. The paper aims to present results of testing the effectiveness of the use of ACPUT by technicians with different levels of experience (expert and beginner). The tests were carried out on special tooling - assembly equipment for plastic pipes, and compared program preparation time, machining time, and production costs.

The study aimed to develop an algorithm for computer-aided design (CAD) of working operations. A processing route for machining components was developed based on the criteria of production manufacturability, industrial data and a digital model of the product. The process of machining a workpiece was analysed using a method of theoretical separation. The machining process of a frame workpiece was used as a model. The identified formal parameters formed a basis for developing a CAD algorithm and a model of manufacturing route associated with the mechanical processing of a work-piece applying a condition-action rule, as well as mathematical logic. The research afforded a scheme for selecting process operations, given the manufacturability parameters of a product design. The concept of CAD algorithm was developed to design a production process of engineering products with given manufacturability parameters, including industrial data. The principle of forming a route and selecting a machining process was proposed. Several criteria of production manufacturability (labour intensity, consumption of materials, production costs) were selected to evaluate mechanical processing. A CAD algorithm for designing technological operations considering the parameters of manufacturability was developed. The algorithm was tested by manufacturing a frame workpiece. The developed algorithm can be used for reducing labour costs and development time, at the same time as improving the quality of production processes. The formalisation of process design is a crucial stage in digitalisation and automation of all production processes.

PurposeThis paper aims to introduce a process chain spanning from scanned data to computer-aided engineering and further required simulations up to the subsequent production. This approach has the potential to reduce production costs and accelerate the procedure.Design/methodology/approachA parametric computer-aided design (CAD) model of the flyer wearing a wingsuit is created enabling easy changes in its posture and the wingsuit geometry. The objective is to track the influence of geometry changes in a timely manner for following simulation scenarios.FindingsAt the final stage, the two-dimensional (2D) pattern cuts were derived from the developed three-dimensional (3D) wingsuit, and the results were compared with the conventional ones used in the first stages of the wingsuit development.Originality/valueProposing a virtual development process chain is challenging; apart from the fact that the CAD construction of a wingsuit flyer – in itself posing a complicated task – is required at a very early stage of the procedure.

The article is devoted to the problems of simulation of the working process of a truck-mounted crane using modern computer-aided design systems and applications for engineering calculations. Currently, analytical methods are mainly used to model the operation of manipulator technology, such as “manual” compilation and solution of Lagrange equations of the second order, or even simpler evaluative calculations based only on basic concepts of theoretical mechanics. However, such objects consist of many parts that are in a complex rotational motion and contact interaction with each other. If such complex systems are modeled by the indicated analytical methods, one has to introduce a number of assumptions that greatly simplify the mathematical model. The level of its adequacy is low. Also recently, numerical methods for modeling mechanisms that are implemented through programming languages by using a detailed description of the process under study are often used abroad. An alternative to these methods is the use of computer-aided design systems in which numerical methods are built-in at the core level of the program and require setting the basic geometric, dynamic and kinematic parameters of the mechanism and the environment, after which they can calculate the functioning parameters of the object under study. The process of creating a simulation model of a truck mounted crane, which is an analogue of an existing laboratory setup, has been considered. To do this, a 3D model of the manipulator in the SolidWorks CAD environment has been developed. The creation technique and the main features of the obtained simulation model have been described

Reverse engineering proceeds in the reverse of conventional manufacturing order, based on the pull system instead of the traditional push system. This paper is concerned with applying the reverse engineering concept to the development of parts. With this procedure the development of parts involves an iterative reverse process from the scanning of a developmental prototype towards the design model. The focus is on the use of two set-ups of network in providing computerized data of the prototype that are exchangeable among Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) systems. The first set-up applies a direct approach to manipulate the scanned data in the CAM environment for generating Numerical Control (NC) programs used for machining the workpiece. The second set-up applies an indirect approach to manipulate the scanned data in a CAD environment prior to generating the NC programs. The major benefits gained from the reverse engineering application in the development of parts are also described.

3D design technology is the basis for the modern computer graphics. AutoCAD 2015 is a powerful version of computer-aided design system. We can solve complex tasks, without which this instrument can’t be solved in general. Using 3D design technology we not only save time working with a drawing. The geometric models are the foundation of the design basics, for working with drawing we can create projections, footnotes, sections and other modern graphics elements. AutoCAD can use and process the data from the model. This progressive design technology includes all parts of the design, starting from machine details, furniture and finishing with architectural forms of complex object models.

Implant based dental restorations have many advantages over standard removable dentures because using implants can prevent the loss of jawbones, help restore facial features, and enable the patients to get firm bites. A critical step in this kind of restorations is the fabrication of the dental bar on which the denture sits. A dental bar is patient-specific because each patient’s jawbone is unique and the device needs to be conforming to the patient’s gingival surface. The design of a dental bar is crucial to the success of dental restorations. Traditionally, designing a dental bar is a lengthy and laborious process and requires high levels of craftsmanship. There have been attempts to develop CAD/CAM systems towards automating design and fabrication of dental restorations. However, currently available commercial CAD/CAM systems are only capable of making crowns, bridges, copings, onlays and veneers, and they are not capable of making dental restorations involving multiple teeth. The present paper describes a method for computer aided design of a dental bar used in implant based dental restorations. The method starts with a set of digital scan data representing the patient’s gingival surface and generates a CAD model of a dental bar that is ready for fabrication of a physical dental bar.
