ANTIMICROBIAL EFFECT OF DIFFERENT ORGANIC AND AQUEOUS EXTRACTS FROM A LAMIACEAE; THYMUS NUMIDICUS HARVESTED IN BOUIRA (ALGERIA)

Periodontitis and tooth decay are common dental diseases. There are some bacterial risk factors such as Streptococcus mutans, Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans and Candida albicans complications, tubers of Cyperus rotundus was used to determine the antimicrobial effect of fungi. Considering the increasing resistance of bacteria and fungi to antibiotics and their alcoholic and aqueous extracts and essential oil on Streptococcus mutans, Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans and Candida albicans, as well as an examination cytotoxicity on gingival fibroblast cells. Alcoholic and aqueous extracts and essential oil prepared from tubers of Cyperus rotundus. After bacterial and fungal cultures, the inhibition zone, Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC), and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC), were studied. Cytotoxicity was also evaluated using the Methyl tetrazolium test (MTT).The results showed that Cyperus rotundus alcoholic extract had the greatest effect on inhibition of growth and death of Streptococcus mutans, Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans. According to the present study, Cyperus rotundus extract can be considered as a suitable candidate for the treatment and prevention of periodontitis and tooth decay.

Garlic powder, essential oil and aqueous extracts from raw garlic and garlic powder prepared in accordance with the corresponding procedures were tested for antimicrobial activity on Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Bacillus subtilis 6633, Sarcina lutea ATCC 4391, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 9027, Salmonella enteritidis, Klebsiel la pneumoniae, Proteus vulgaris, Candida albicans ATCC 10231 and Aspergillus niger ATCC 16404; and, three pathogen microorganisms isolated from human material were also used: Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Candida albicans. The antimicrobial activities of the preparations were compared with that of commercial antibiotics and four commercial preparation based on garlic powder and essential oil. Aqueous extracts from raw garlic, from freshly prepared powder and powder stored for 18 months at +4?had the greatest antibacterial and antimycotic activities on all the microorganisms tested. The essential oil obtained by hydro distillation and commercial preparations based on garlic essential oil showed no antimicrobial activity on the microorganisms tested. Thermal oils showed a bacteriostatic or very weak bacteriostatic effect on all the microorganisms except Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The garlic powder and commercial preparations based on the powder have a strong antimicrobial effect on all the microbes except on Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

So the aim of this study is to explore the antimicrobial action of Boswellia, Lichen, Coffea peel, Rhatany (Krameria triandra), Cuminum cyminum, Pimpinella anisum, Asafoetida, and Saussurea costus aqueous and solvent extracts on some therapeutically significant bacteria and fungi isolated from animals. Hot and cold aqueous extracts in addition to alcohol extracts of Boswellia, Lichen, Coffea peel, Rhatany (Krameria triandra), Cuminum cyminum, Pimpinella anisum , Asafoetida,and Saussurea costus were assessed for their antimicrobial effect against Streptococcus, Escherichia coli Salmonella, klebsiella and Candida albicans by agar well diffusion method. Every single examined plants and herbs indicated antibacterial impact against examined pathogenic microscopic organisms particularly Rhatany, Asafoetida, Lichen, and Pimpinella anisum. The lesser impact was for Coffea peel. Also the most antifungal action against Candida albican swas for Rhatany. For the most part the viable concentrate was the cold aqueous extract for all analyzed plants and herbs.

Abstract Potentilla reptans is a little studied plant of the genus Potentilla, the family Rosaceae. The aim of this study is to determine antimicrobial effects of aqueous extracts of P. reptans aerial part and rhizome against standardized bacterial strains. The antimicrobial activity of aqueous extracts of P. reptans aerial part and rhizome was tested against one fungus, Candida albicans, and two standard bacterial strains, Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, using an agar diffusion method. Both examined extracts showed a significant antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus at the concentrations of 10 to 150 mg/ml. The rhizome extract showed stronger antimicrobial effect against the tested strains of bacteria than the aerial part extract. The obtained results represent preliminary results of antimicrobial activity of this plant and suggest that in future, the studies should examine antimicrobial activity against other bacterial strains and minimum inhibitory concentration.
