The main goal of this research is to determine the link between happiness and individual subjective life expectancy (SLE) among Chilean senior citizens. We use data from the 2015 edition of the Chilean Social Protection Survey. Our sample consists of 1298 seniors: 700 aged 65–74, 421 aged 75–84, and 177 aged 85 and older. We provide a novel methodological approach that allows us to measure the relative contribution of happiness to SLE, by combining the Shapley–Owen–Shorrocks decomposition with contrasts of marginal linear predictions of the equality of the means by groups. Results reveal that happiness is the most important determinant of seniors’ SLE, and the effect is stronger the older the people are. Addressing varying levels of happiness is important because both happiness and unhappiness have a significant impact. In an ageing population, social agents should consider that these variables (happiness and SLE) are related to engagement in healthy lifestyles. If prevention programs integrated this interaction, welfare systems could save scarce resources. Therefore, governments should foster happiness to support active ageing.

The phenomenon of population ageing is important for the state not only for business, economic or demographic reasons, but also for social aspects. A broadly defined pedagogy of ageing is important for the development of seniors, but also for changes in the awareness of society which starts to recognise the significant influence that elderly people have for the functioning of the state. The article refers to the issue of educational activity of elderly people and its role in improving their quality of life. The education of senior citizens is one of the opportunities for developing cooperation between younger population groups and the elderly. Therefore, in addition to the Polish literature on active ageing, the article will also include the collected opinions of students, which reflect the considerations of the contemporary generation regarding the discussed issue.

Abstract: The author analyzes the state policy of the Russian Federation oriented toward using and developing the potential of senior citizens, in particular its administration in library and information services. She reviews the documents on active ageing and senior citizen participation in economic and socio cultural development, i. e. federal laws, decrees, presidential messages, strategies, concepts, national programs, etc. Special attention is given to the related government programs and legal acts adopted in St. Petersburg. The priorities of the national and regional policy in the area are analyzed. The accomplished projects of Russian and, in particular, St. Petersburg public libraries are characterized. Personality orientation, humanism and social viability make the principles of library senior user services. The key vectors and formats of services are reviewed.

Objective: The specialised literature indicates that the two key aspects in active ageing are performing physical activity and life satisfaction. Regarding physical activity, this not only improves physical aspects of senior citizens, but also has a positive impact on mental well-being and satisfaction with one’s own life. The aim is to demonstrate the relationship between these two variables to explain healthy ageing.Method: In a sample of 300 senior citizen subjects, the influence of various sociodemographic variables (age, sex, institutionalisation, and level of education) on the performance of physical activity and life satisfaction, is analysed. The research design is a non-experimental study with two unique cross-sectional and correlational measurement groups. Results: An analysis of the results indicates that people with a higher level of education present differences in physical and motivational reserves. Furthermore, age and institutionalisation have an impact on physical reserves. Analysis using structural equation models allows key relationships between the variables analysed to be predicted, which can guide the implementation of active ageing. Conclusion: Motivational reserves affect healthy cognitive ageing through their positive impact on cognitive and physical reserves.
