Natural terpenes as substances with multidirectional biological activities

Terpenes, secondary metabolites, are considered by scientists around the World. Multidirectional biological activities of these substances encourage researchers to their detail analysis towards numerous diseases such as neurodegenerative or metabolic. In the presented paper, authors have focused on Alzheimer’s disease and diabetes as potential direction of terpenes’ activity. According to available literature, terpenes exhibit satisfactory antioxidant activity and ability to inhibition AChE, BuChE (Alzhiemer’s disease) and α-amylase, α-glucosidase (diabetes). Basis of the presented research are both essential oils obtained from plants such as salvia, rosemary, basil and lemon balm being one of the main source of natural terpenes, and single compounds. Special attention is paid to monoterpenes as the main components of numerous essential oils. Among terpenes presented in the paper, activity of ocimene, carvone, pulegone, α-phellandrene exhibiting activity towards both free radical scavenging as well as AChE and BuChE inhibition, and α-pinene, citral, limonene that revealing inhibitory activity towards α-amylase and α-glucosidase should be emphasized.

The antioxidant activity and free radical scavenging capacity of the essential oil and three different extracts of wildly grownMentha longifolia(M. longifolia) were studied. The essential oil fromM. longifoliaaerial parts was isolated by hydrodistillation technique using Clevenger-type apparatus. The extracts were prepared with three solvents of different polarity (n-hexane, dichloromethane, and methanol) using Soxhlet extractor. Maximum extract yield was obtained with methanol (12.6 g/100 g) while the minimum with dichloromethane (3.50 g/100 g). The essential oil content was found to be 1.07 g/100 g. A total of 19 constituents were identified in theM. longifoliaoil using GC/MS. The main components detected were piperitenone oxide, piperitenone, germacrene D, borneol, andβ-caryophyllene. The total phenolics (TP) and total flavonoids (TF) contents of the methanol extract ofM. longifoliawere found to be significantly higher than dichloromethane and hexane extracts. The dichloromethane and methanol extracts exhibited excellent antioxidant activity as assessed by 2,2′-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging ability, bleachingβ-carotene, and inhibition of linoleic acid peroxidation assays. The essential oil and hexane extract showed comparatively weaker antioxidant and free radical scavenging activities. The results of the study have validated the medicinal and antioxidant potential ofM. longifoliaessential oil and extracts.

The chemical composition of hydrodistilled oil from the fruit residue of Ficus altissima was analyzed for the first time by GC/GC–MS. As a result, a total of seventeen compounds were identified, representing all of the oil. Aliphatic hydrocarbons, esters and alkylenes were found to compose three major chemotype accounted for 64.25%, 26.00% and 9.75% of the oil, respectively. The main components was demonstrated to be dibutyl phthalate(18.14%), n-docosane(7.94%), diisooctyl phthalate(7.86%), n-heptadecane(7.70%), n-tricosane(7.68%), phytane(7.19%). Antioxidant activity of the oil was assessed by the free radical scavenging (DPPH). The study offers theoretic basis for pharmaceutical utilization of the landscape plant F. altissima.

Introduction: The plant, Astilboides tabularis (Hemsl.) Engler, is used in Chinese and Korean medicine to regulate blood sugar levels; however, little is known about its precise effects. Materials and Methods: In this study, we aimed to measure the composition as well as the antioxidant, and anti-proliferative capacities of A. tabularis. Various extracts were generated using different organic solvents, and in vitro antioxidant activities were evaluated using DPPH free radical-scavenging and reducing power assays. The extracts were also evaluated based on their ability to inhibit lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced Nitric Oxide (NO) production in RAW 264.7 cells. Results: Research shows that the A. tabularis ethyl acetate (EtOAc) extract showed significant antioxidant activity. Additionally, this extract could inhibit the LPS-induced expression of inflammatory mediators and pro-inflammatory cytokines in RAW 264.7 cells, including inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), and interleukin-1 beta (IL-1ß). Notably, the A. tabularis EtOAc extract also displayed potent cytotoxic effects against MCF-7 and HeLa cancer cell lines, as determined by MTT assays. Lastly, total phenol and flavonoid content was measured for all extracts, and four flavonoid compounds-catechin, kaempferol, quercitrin, and isoquercetin were isolated from the EtOAc extract. Their structures were confirmed using mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance, and these isolated compounds were found to display potent DPPH free radical-scavenging activity. Conclusion: Thus, our data suggest that phenolic compounds in A. tabularis extracts promote antioxidant activity, and furthermore, these extracts show numerous features that indicate potential for therapeutic development.

  Objective: The flavonoids are a heterogeneous group of plant polyphenols that are endowed with several biological activities including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, antiviral, antimutagenic, and anticarcinogenic properties. They are believed to interfere with the various free radical-producing systems and they also enhance the functions of endogenous antioxidants. The aim of this study was to compare the antioxidant activity of synthesized substituted flavones by various free radical scavenging assays.Methods: The flavones used in the study, 6,3’,4’ - trihydroxy flavones (THF) and 3-hydroxy-6,3’-dimethoxy flavones were synthesized using standard procedures and their antioxidant activity was compared by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay, hydrogen peroxide scavenging assay, hydroxyl radical scavenging assay, reducing power capacity, superoxide free radical scavenging assay, and 2,2′-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6- sulphonic acid assay.Results: In the DPPH assay, THF has an inhibitory concentration 50% value of 18.89 μg/ml which was much better than that of standard ascorbic acid which was 26.1 μg/ml. The THF had a much better antioxidant activity in most of the free radical scavenging assays.Conclusion: From the study, it can be seen that the flavones showed significant antioxidant activity that can be used for treatment of various diseases

This research adopts the pancreatin hydrolysis of silk fibroin active peptide, evaluate the antioxidant activity of hydrolysates. In the process of hydrolysis of silk fibroin, by measuring the amino nitrogen content of neutral formaldehyde titration method. Find the amino nitrogen content gradually stabilized at around 0.37g/L, and superoxide free radical scavenging rate changing with time fluctuation trend, superoxide free radical scavenging rate to a maximum of 65.03% at 220min.The use of silk fibroin hydrolysis process optimization,reaction time 160min, enzyme concentration4% , substrate concentration 20mg/ml, pH 8, temperature 38°C. The hydrolysis process under the hydrolysate on superoxide radical scavenging rate of 72.73%. The scavenging rate of hydroxyl radical is 47.24%. Red blood cell hemolysis induced by H2O2 inhibition rate was 24.30%.

Objective: This study was designed to determine the Total phenol, flavonoid content, antioxidant and free radical scavenging properties of different solvent extracts of Piper umbellatum.  Methods: Different solvent extracts evaluated with DPPH radical scavenging activity and Reducing power activity.Results: The presence of phenol and flavonoid showed highly in the methanol extracts than ethyl acetate and acetone extracts. All the extracts have various level of antioxidant activity. Methanol solvent extract have good extraction and show significant antioxidant activity. The effect of reducing power of methanol extract revealed good antioxidant activity compare with other tested extracts.Conclusion: On the basis of the above results we concluded that methanol extract of Piper umbellatum whole plant extracts shows significant antioxidant activity than ethyl acetate and acetone extracts.Keywords: Piper umbellatum, Antioxidant, DPPH, FRAP assay, Polar, Non polar solvents

Chitosan with 80% degree of deacetylation was hydrolyzed by cellulase of Trichoderma viride to prepare chitooligosaccharides (COSs) by the fractionation of the COSs with ultrafiltration membrane. The antioxidant activities of the COSs were clarified in this study by reducing power and free radical scavenging ability assay by UV-VIS absorption spectrum. The results show that the COS 1 (10,000-5,000 Da), COS 2 (5,000-3,000 Da), COS 3 (3,000-1,000 Da) and COS 4 (less than1,000 Da) segments have antioxidant properties.The antioxidant activitives of the COSs increased with the increment of concentration, and they also depended on molecular weight.
