In the paper, the qualitative and quantitative comparison of EC3 methods to verify the global stability of the structure is presented. The steel portal frame subjected to varied loads is considered. The initial global sway imperfection and the initial local bow imperfections of member frame are taken into account. The sensitivity of a structure to the 2nd order effects is assessed indirectly using the elastic critical load. The elastic critical load of a frame is calculated according to the buckling mode. The 2nd order effects are taken into account using the finite element method. Keywords: second order effects, steel frame, global stability, critical load.

AbstractIn this paper, the dynamic buckling of an elastic cylindrical shell subjected to an axial impact load is analyzed in Hamiltonian system. By employing a symplectic method, the traditional governing equations are transformed into Hamiltonian canonical equations in dual variables. In this system, the critical load and buckling mode are reduced to solving symplectic eigenvalues and eigensolutions respectively. The result shows that the critical load relates with boundary conditions, thickness of the shell and radial inertia force. And the corresponding buckling modes present some local shapes. Besides, the process of dynamic buckling is related to the stress wave, the critical load and buckling mode depend upon the impacted time. This paper gives analytically and numerically some new rules of the buckling problem, which is useful for designing shell structures.

Fluency tests are frequently used in clinical practice to asses executive functions. The literature data are not unequivocal although in a great number of papers is pointed out the importance of the left hemisphere, specially of the left frontal lobes in the mediation of phonological fluency and the right hemisphere in the mediation of nonverbal fluency. This paper considers the suitability of fluency tests for the detection of left versus right seizure laterality. The sample consisted of thirty-two epilepsy patients divided into two groups: LHF-participants with the seizure focus in the left hemisphere (n=16), and DHF-participants with the seizure focus in the right hemisphere (n=16), and K-the control group of t age-matched healthy children (n=50) aged 7-11 years. The qualitative and quantitative comparison of the phonological and nonverbal fluency performance was carried out in consideration of the seizure laterality as well as compared to the healthy controls. The results of phonological fluency performance revealed that the performance of the LHF group was significantly reduced as compared to both DHF and K group. The analysis of nonverbal fluency performance revealed that the performance of the DHF group was significantly reduced as compared to both LHF and K group The qualitative analysis obtained valuable data, which could additionally contribute to the neuropsychological evaluation of the left versus right seizure laterality.

Stresses of a structure are determined with a first or a second order analysis. The choice of the method is guided by the potential influence of the structure’s deformation. In general, considering their low rigidity with regard to those of buildings, scaffolding and shoring structures quickly reach buckling failure. Imperfections, such as structural defects or residual stresses, generate significant second order effects which have to be taken into account. The main challenge is to define these imperfections and to include them appropriately in the calculations. The present study suggests a new approach to define all the structure’s imperfections as a unique imperfection, based on the shape of elastic critical buckling mode of the structure. This study proposes a method allowing to determine the equation of the elastic critical buckling mode from the eigenvectors of the second order analysis of the structure. Subsequently, a comparative study of bending moments of different structures calculated according to current Eurocode 3 or 9 methods or according to the new method is performed. The obtained results prove the performance of the proposed method.

This article aims to shed light on the nonlinear local-distortional-global interactive behavior of web-slotted channel columns by use of the finite element method. The effects of three kinds of initial geometric imperfection based on different distortional buckling mode were evaluated. It indicates that different distortional buckling mode does little difference on the nonlinear interactive buckling behavior of web-slotted channels. Based on the extensive parametric study, some modifications were made to the traditional Effective Width Method for the practical design of web-slotted channel columns undergoing local-distortional-global interactive buckling.

Though in most data warehousing applications no relevance is given to the time when events are recorded, some domains call for a different behavior. In particular, whenever late measurements of events take place, and particularly when the events registered are subject to further updates, the traditional design solutions fail in preserving accountability and query consistency. In this article, we discuss the alternative design solutions that can be adopted, in presence of late measurements, to support different types of queries that enable meaningful historical analysis. These solutions are based on the enforcement of the distinction between transaction time and valid time within the schema that represents the fact of interest. Besides, we provide a qualitative and quantitative comparison of the solutions proposed, aimed at enabling wellinformed design decisions.

<p>According to the Eurocode 3 Part 1-2 (EN1993-1-2) (CEN 2005b), it is possible for structural engineers to consider physical based thermal actions and to do performance based design instead of using prescriptive rules based on nominal fire curves. However, some uncertainties remain in the use of such approaches. This study focus on the clarification of the use of the simplified design methods to assess the fire resistance of unbraced steel frames exposed to fire. On the other hand, a recent study (Couto et al. 2013) suggests the use of a buckling coefficient of 1.0 for all the columns except those belonging to the first storey of a pinned framed where 2.0 should be taken instead and it is unclear if the consideration of such values for the buckling lengths is adequate when using performance based designs.</p>In this study, a comparison is made between simple and advanced calculation models and it is demonstrated that the simple design methods, using the suggested buckling coefficients to calculate the fire resistance of the frames are safe sided when compared to the use of advanced calculations using the finite element method (FEM).
