Realism is an important aspect of the virtual shooting range, which increases the quality of the shooting training conducted there. An important element of realism is the modeling of damage arising during the impact of the projectile on the target. This article concerns damage modelling in computer simulation systems. Using the Unity environment, example simulations of damage caused by projectile impact on basic construction materials have been performed. The obtained solutions have been analysed, with the results compared with those of real experiments; conclusions pertaining to the optimal method of modelling destruction in simulation systems meant for visualisation at virtual shooting ranges have been drawn.

In this paper the authors propose a crowd coordination mechanism to increase the quality of articles produced in wiki systems. Wikis constitute promising social digital ecosystems for collaborative knowledge creation on the Web. However, as a result of the purely self-coordinated manner that they function, they cannot ensure the quality of the produced articles - an issue that affects their reliability and acceptance. The authors show that wiki article quality optimization can be formulated as a resource allocation problem. Contributors are selected from the wiki community crowd according to their skills, and matched to the articles they can improve the most. A model of the English Wikipedia is given, parameterized and validated from recent field studies results. Experimental results were obtained with simulation systems implementing this model and on a series of scenarios, which include an analysis of the impact of using semantic relations between wiki domains. The obtained results indicate that the proposed mechanism can lead to the production of wiki articles of higher quality, compared to the respective results achieved by the fully self-coordinated wiki.

The article presents the results of three years of research on the impact of traditional storage methods on the safety and quality of Jerusalem artichoke tubers. The beneficial properties of Jerusalem artichoke have been known for many years. Due to biological characteristics, the use of tubers throughout the calendar year is a rather problematic task - they undergo fungal diseases and quickly dry out. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the optimal method of storage in a vegetable store. In most years of the research, the storability of Jerusalem artichoke did not depend on the storage method and varied from 31 to 95. External observations showed that in the second year of the research the best keeping quality was ensured by the method of storing tubers in bags. In the first and third years of the research, rotted tubers were observed under all methods of storage. Regardless of the method used, tubers were dried during storage. In most years of the research, moisture loss was higher when stored in bulk - by 1.7-8.2. When storing Jerusalem artichoke tubers in boxes, the lowest reduction in fiber content was observed - 0.2-2.5, while when stored in bags - 1.1-4.3, when stored in bulk - 0.9-2.4. Storage in boxes provided the smallest reduction in the content of water-soluble sugars - 1.4-4.8. The most optimal of the traditional methods of storage is the storage in boxes.

Noise and visual pollution are major arising pollution in the world. These types of pollution cause negative impacts on the inhabitants of the inbuilt environment or on the outside communities. Visual pollution affects the overall wellbeing of the community and retards quality of life. Moreover, noise pollution arises mainly from transportation, construction, industrialization and electronic equipment or tools. This study was carried out to mitigate the noise and visual pollution by proposing basic design strategies that can be applicable anywhere. Proper town and building planning could be a better option with noise tolerant buildings and noise barriers. In addition, building designs and selection of suitable construction materials also have to be considered in mitigating noise and visual pollution. However, it is mainly the responsibility of the decision makers of the society to make the development look and feel better as well as of the designers and planners to implement proper methods to ensure that the community fits the regulations.

The article dwells on the applications of computer simulation techniques to solve specific tasks in manufacturing. The problem under consideration is relevant because these broadly used methods allow us to save a significant amount of time and material resources, which is an important factor in current manufacturing operation conditions.Conducts computer analysis of thermal strain processes occurred when welding a track of the tracked vehicle chain component. Performs a finite-element model of the product, specifies the material and environment properties, the fastening conditions, and the welding modes. Considers three options for laying welds. Based on simulation results, residual displacements, arising in the crest during welding, have been obtained. The most optimal method for laying welds is selected where no further product post-treatment is required. The study shows that computer simulation is an efficient tool to solve the tasks, when their analytical calculating is impossible or in case it is unreasonable to conduct full-scale experiments because of high costs. Varying of different parameters allows us to estimate a quality of developed technology without multiple experiments.

AbstractGlycol-based antifreeze liquids are used in two main areas: ICECS and HVAC. The standard research methods and requirements were developed to control the quality of fluids for the internal combustion engine cooling systems. Irrespective of the intended use, fluid tests are conducted with the same methods. This manuscript aims to study two types of antifreeze with standard methods. Then, the analysis was deepened to include microscopic techniques to identify the potential pitting corrosion centres on the surface of the selected metals. It was demonstrated that the application of microscopic techniques could significantly increase the chance to detect potential corrosion centres.

Purpose The purpose of this study was to identify levels of self-compassion in adults who do and do not stutter and to determine whether self-compassion predicts the impact of stuttering on quality of life in adults who stutter. Method Participants included 140 adults who do and do not stutter matched for age and gender. All participants completed the Self-Compassion Scale. Adults who stutter also completed the Overall Assessment of the Speaker's Experience of Stuttering. Data were analyzed for self-compassion differences between and within adults who do and do not stutter and to predict self-compassion on quality of life in adults who stutter. Results Adults who do and do not stutter exhibited no significant differences in total self-compassion, regardless of participant gender. A simple linear regression of the total self-compassion score and total Overall Assessment of the Speaker's Experience of Stuttering score showed a significant, negative linear relationship of self-compassion predicting the impact of stuttering on quality of life. Conclusions Data suggest that higher levels of self-kindness, mindfulness, and social connectedness (i.e., self-compassion) are related to reduced negative reactions to stuttering, an increased participation in daily communication situations, and an improved overall quality of life. Future research should replicate current findings and identify moderators of the self-compassion–quality of life relationship.

Lung cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers across Northern America and Europe. Treatment options offered are dependent on the type of cancer, the location of the tumor, the staging, and the overall health of the person. When surgery for lung cancer is offered, difficulty swallowing is a potential complication that can have several influencing factors. Surgical interaction with the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) can lead to unilateral vocal cord palsy, altering swallow function and safety. Understanding whether the RLN has been preserved, damaged, or sacrificed is integral to understanding the effect on the swallow and the subsequent treatment options available. There is also the risk of post-surgical reduction of physiological reserve, which can reduce the strength and function of the swallow in addition to any surgery specific complications. As lung cancer has a limited prognosis, the clinician must also factor in the palliative phase, as this can further increase the burden of an already compromised swallow. By understanding the surgery and the implications this may have for the swallow, there is the potential to reduce the impact of post-surgical complications and so improve quality of life (QOL) for people with lung cancer.
