  Objective: This study aims to document the fatty acid composition of Solanum surattense Burm. f. collected from hot desert of India, Rajasthan.Methods: The fatty acid analysis was performed by gas chromatography-flame ionization detector (GC-FID). The operating conditions used to examine methyl esters of fatty acids are as follows. Fatty acids were converted into methyl esters (FAMEs) before GC analysis according to the standard methods by Ranganna (1986). Quantitative determinations of FAMEs were conducted using GC-FID and capillary column HP-88 Agilent Technologies.Results: The most abundant fatty was palmitic acid (13.2%), oleic acid (22.9%), and linoleic acid (11.9%). This plant is good source of important fatty acids including all the groups of saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs and PUFAs) and can be used as a commercial source of fatty acids especially MUFAs and PUFAs.Conclusion: The plant is well studied for various pharmacological activities such as antiasthmatic, anticancer, cardiovascular, and hepatoprotective. Determination of fatty acid profiles in nutritional and clinical research with precision and fastness has become popular for human health and basic research.

Abstract The present study was carried out to investigate the effects of steam treated rice straw-based diets on, physico-chemical properties of longissimus muscle of goat. Goats were assigned to rice straw treated with steam at 15.5 kgf/cm2 for 120 Sec (STRS) and untreated rice (UTRS) straw-based diets. After 60 days all goats were slaughtered and 50 g of muscle longissimus dorsi (LD) was removed from left side of carcass for determination of meat quality and fatty acid profile. The results showed that the steam treated rice straw diet improved (P < 0.05) carcass yield and dressing % of goats as compared to untreated rice straw fed goats. Significantly higher protein and lower moisture was observed for meat of STRS group than UTRS, however the fat, ash contents, meat color and pH were not different between the groups. The TBARS values gradually increased in stored meat. The different diet did not affect the composition of fatty acids. Total saturated (∑SFA) monounsaturated fatty acids (∑MUFA) for UTRS and total polyunsaturated fatty acid (∑PUFA) for STRS group was higher (P > 0.05). It is concluded that the goats fed on treated straw diet (STRS) maintained carcass yield, dressing % and meat composition without negative impact on meat characteristics.

<p>Research has been conducted on the determination of tuna oil and lard spectra using FTIR. This research aims to determine the IR spectra profile of lard and tuna oil and to compare both spectra profiles. Profile and comparison of lard and tuna oil IR spectra useful to determine whether an ingredient or a product contaminated with lard. The fatty acid profile of lard by FTIR analysis showed a significant difference in the absorption patterns of the spectra, especially at 3010-3000, 1680- 1600, and 968-966 cm-1 wavenumbers which represented the different composition and type of fatty acids in the lard and tuna oil. The absorption patterns at 3007 and 1653 cm-1 regions (double bond C=C cis) for tuna oil showed relatively high peaks if it is compared to lard samples because of the percentage of MUFA fatty acids (oleic acid) in tuna oil was much higher. </p><p> </p><p>Telah dilakukan penelitian mengenai penentuan spektra minyak ikan tuna dan lemak babi dengan menggunakan FTIR. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui profil spektra IR dari lemak babi dan minyak ikan tuna serta membandingkan kedua profil spektranya. Profil dan perbandingan spektra IR lemak babi dan minyak ikan tuna dapat digunakan sebagai dasar penentuan apakah suatu bahan atau produk terkontaminasi lemak babi. Profil asam lemak babi hasil analisis FTIR menunjukkan adanya perbedaan yang cukup signifikan pada pola-pola penyerapan spektra, khususnya pada bilangan gelombang 3010-3000, 1680-1600 dan 968-966 cm-1 yang merepresentasikan perbedaan komposisi dan jenis asam lemak pada sampel lemak babi dan minyak ikan tuna. Pola serapan pada bilangan gelombang 3007 dan 1653 cm-1 (ikatan rangkap C=C cis) untuk sampel minyak ikan tuna menunjukkan puncak yang relatif tinggi jika dibandingkan dengan sampel lemak babi karena persentase asam lemak MUFA (asam oleat) pada minyak ikan tuna jauh lebih tinggi. </p>

Atlantic cod is a coldwater teleost of commercial importance. The intestinal epithelium is a large organ in vertebrates serving an important role in nutrient selection and uptake as well as an immunological barrier. Here, we perform lipid and fatty acid analysis of the plasma membrane from the cod intestinal enterocytes after separation of the brush border membrane and the basolateral membrane fractions. Our results show that both membrane fractions contain an unusually high amount of cholesterol and glycolipids but low levels of glycerophospholipids compared with other reported studies on fish. Sphingomyelin was the dominant lipid in the brush border fraction and was also prominent in the basolateral fraction where phosphatidylcholine was the dominant glycerophospholipid. Furthermore, our results show a distinct difference in fatty acids content, where monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) were more abundant than polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA). Nervonic acid (24:1n-9) was a prominent fatty acid in the BBM at ~50% of the total MUFA. We hypothesize that the high cholesterol content and the presence of this rare fatty acid may serve to maintain membrane fluidity in the cold environment.

In this study, we present results on fatty acid analysis of phytoplankton of Lake Baikal, the world’s deepest lake, which differs from other lakes by its oceanic features. Since we used a large-mesh net, the net sample phytoplankton were primarily represented by the large elongated diatom Synedra acus. subsp. radians (Kützing) Skabichevskij. The similar algae composition of net samples of spring season phytoplankton collected at different sites of the lake allows us to compare results of the fatty acid analysis of these samples. The phytoplankton diversity of the sedimentation samples was contrary represented by 32 algae species. There are clear changes in the fatty acid composition of net phytoplankton exposed to anthropogenic impacts of varying intensity. The content of polyunsaturated fatty acids in phytoplankton collected from central stations (pelagic stations at a distance of ~10–30 km from the shoreline) without anthropogenic impact was higher by up to 15% than phytoplankton collected from nearshore stations (littoral stations at a distance of ~0.01–0.05 km from the shoreline) and offshore stations (pelagic stations at a distance of ~3 km from the shoreline). The interlaboratory precision of fatty acid determination of phytoplankton is estimated as ≤10%. We found high content of the lipid peroxidation marker (80–340 μg g−1 of dry weight) in phytoplankton from nearshore and offshore stations with intensive anthropogenic impact. In phytoplankton from central stations, we did not find any lipid peroxidation. Determination of unsaturated fatty acids, coupled with analysis of fatty acid peroxidation products, can be used to evaluate the level of anthropogenic impact in terms of ecological health and biodiversity conservation.

Background: Ruscus specie are used as traditional medicine, food, and foliage. The aim of this work is the determination of fatty acid composition of Ruscus hyrcanus as a native medicinal plant of Iran for the first time together with comparison of different esterification methods. Methods: Two different esterification methods were used for preparation of esterified fatty acids from different extracts of underground and aerial parts of the herb. GC/MS analysis were used for identification and quantification of fatty acids. Finally, the results were compared. Results: Findings showed that R. hyrcanus is rich in essential fatty acids such as linoleic acid (13-25%) and linolenic acid (23-44%). Also, oil samples contain remarkable amount of palmitic acid (19-57%). Conclusion: The results showed that R. hyrcanus could be considered as a source of essential fatty acids. Also, it could be concluded that a simple esterification method with methanolic KOH and 2 min vortex is suitable for fatty acid analysis of Ruscus species.
