Natural biodegradable and biocompatible polysaccharides chitosan, pectin, carrageenan and heparin were used to form thin nanostructured films. In this study using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and force spectroscopy the special characteristics of formation and structure of thin coatings were investigated, three models of the polymers interaction were proposed. Different mechanisms of polymers influence on each other in the bilayers formation were shown, coatings with different surface structure and mechanical properties were formed. The obtained data can be used for the preparation of nanostructured coatings with desired surface parameters.

Abstract The need to test for the durability and capability of a coating before being subjected to service is highly important for engineering applications. Ultra-low indentation of nano-hardness and nano-scratch are valuable methods of measuring durability and near-surface mechanical properties of thin films. AISI 304 stainless steel was coated with Repellix superhydrophobic coating using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and atomic layer deposition (ALD) techniques at constant processing parameters. The deposited films were characterized through nanoindentation, nanoscratch, and water contact angle to establish the effect of coating technique on the mechanical properties of the thin films. The results established that the ALD deposition technique has better hardness but less wear resistance when compared to the sample produced using the CVD method. ALD also showed to have a lower contact angle in comparison with a coating deposited by CVD. Overall, it is expected that the substrate coated by CVD would outperform samples produced via ALD as regards to typical applications where good wear and corrosion resistance are required.

Improving the selectivity of gas sensors is crucial for their further development. One effective route to enhance this key property of sensors is the use of selective nanomembrane materials. This work aims to present how metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and thin films prepared by atomic layer deposition (ALD) can be applied as nanomembranes to separate different gases, and hence improve the selectivity of gas sensing devices. First, the fundamentals of the mechanisms and configuration of gas sensors will be given. A selected list of studies will then be presented to illustrate how MOFs and ALD materials can be implemented as nanomembranes and how they can be implemented to improve the operational performance of gas sensing devices. This review comprehensively shows the benefits of these novel selective nanomaterials and opens prospects for the sensing community.
