Reduced quality ofcowpea due to late harvest and therefore pathogen incidence may influence the results of the germination test, whenever losses are associated with the agentsadhered to seed coat;in that context, chemical treatmentof seeds during the evaluations may reflect more accurately physiological quality of the samples, which in turn may assurethe emergence results of healthy seedlings and establishment of appropriate plant populations inthe field. This study had the objective ofevaluating the effects of fungicide treatment on minimizing physiological quality losses of cowpea seedsdue to lateharvestin germination and seedling development tests. The experimental design was the completely randomized with four replications. Treatments consisted of cowpea, cultivar BRS Guariba, harvested at different times (0, 3, 6, 9, 12 and 15 days after physiological maturity)andtreated or not with fungicide carboxim+thiramfor seed quality tests. Seeds were initially characterized by seed moisture and mass. Afterwards, sampleswere evaluated by tests ofgermination percentage, germination first count, seedling length and dry matter. Data was submitted to variance analysisand means were analyzed as a 2x6 factorial. Means from chemical treatment and harvest times were compared by the Tukey test and regression analysis (p≤0.05), respectively, with subsequent unfolding of any significant interactions. Delayed harvest of cowpea seeds sharply reduces germination and vigor; fungicide treatment before performing physiological tests enables to establish thatseed quality losses can bein part caused by pathogen vehiculationonthe seed coat.

ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of the chemical treatment with fungicide, insecticide, micronutrient and polymer on physiological and sanitary quality of soybean seeds during storage. The treatments were arranged in a 3 x 5 x 5 factorial scheme (cultivars x seeds treatment x storage period), in completely randomized design with four replicates. Three cultivars were used: NA 4823RG, BMX TurboRR and Fundacep 62RR. The treatments were: T1: no chemical treatment, T2: fungicide, insecticide and micronutrient; T3: fungicide, insecticide, micronutrient and polymer, T4: fungicide; T5: insecticide. After the chemical treatment, the seeds were stored under environmental conditions from May to December 2012, and seed quality was evaluated at 0, 2, 4, 6 and 8 months of storage. Seeds water content and physiological quality were determined through tests of germination, accelerated aging, seedling length, seedling dry weight and sanity. The treatment with fungicides, insecticides, micronutrients and polymer did not affect seed quality over eight months of storage and promoted the control fungi associated with the seeds.

Abstract: Some desiccation techniques for harvesting wheat may affect seed quality. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of different desiccant herbicides applied to the wheat crop and their effects on the production and seed quality. The experiment was conducted with cultivar COODETEC 150 (CD 150) in two sites in Palotina (Paraná state, Brazil) with a randomized block design consisting of 7 treatments (desiccation herbicides) and 4 replications. Desiccation was realized when 50% of the plants were in stage 80 with seeds in powdery or mass consistency. The variables analyzed were percentage of moisture content after harvest, Yield, hectoliter weight, mass of 100 seeds, vigor, germination, fresh mass of seedlings, dry mass of seedlings and root length. The herbicides carfentrazone-ethyl and clethodim were the ones that promoted greatest reduction in vigor. The herbicide paraquat caused reduction in seedling length. There was a reduction in the mass of 100 seeds for glufosinate-ammonium, clethodim, diquat and carfentrazone-ethyl. Glufosinate-ammonium, paraquat, glyphosate, clethodim and diquat caused reduction in yield. Desiccation of Cultivar CD 150 at stage 80 is not recommended, since plant Yield and physiological seed parameters were adversely affected by herbicides.

ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of timbó seed coat on the physiological and sanitary quality of soybean seeds. Timbó seeds were collected from mature fruits in the Cerrado. The external layer of the seed coat was removed and crushed in a mill and used in the treatment of soybean seeds. Three lots of soybean seeds were used, from high, medium and low vigor seeds. The treatments were: powder; gel; hydroalcoholic extract; synthetic fungicide (Vitavax® - Thiram 200 sc), and untreated seeds. The physiological quality of the soybean seeds was determined by standard germination, accelerated aging, length, fresh and dry mass of seedlings. Blotter test was used to determine the sanitary quality. The statistical analyze used was a completely randomized 3 × 5 factorial design, considering three seed lots and five treatments. Treatment with the coat seed extract and gel improves the physiological quality of soybean seeds from low vigor lots. The treatment of seeds with gel decreases the incidence of Fusarium and Penicillium genus; and treatment with the powder reduced the incidence of the Cercospora genus.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the physiological quality of cowpea seeds and the economic viability of storage in different types of packaging and with different chemical treatments. Seeds were submitted to one of the following chemical treatments of active ingredients: fipronil; fipronil + pyraclostrobin + thiophanate methyl; and fludioxonil + metalaxyl. Seeds without chemical treatment constituted the control. Seeds were placed in permeable cotton bags, permeable raffia bags, semipermeable kraft paper bags, and impermeable PET bottles. The following were evaluated: seed moisture content; germination test; first germination count; germination speed index; hypocotyl length; root length and hypocotyl dry mass and root dry mass. Cost analysis of treatments was also performed. The physiological quality of cowpea seeds was more markedly reduced under storage conditions in permeable packages with fludioxonil + metalaxyl treatment. Impermeable packaging without chemical treatment decreased deterioration of physiological quality in cowpea seeds and is economically viable for a storage period of up to 90 days.

Variations in the sowing date of chia (Salvia hispanica L.) reflect directly on the physiological potential of the produced seeds. This study aimed to analyze the yield and the physical and physiological quality of seeds from the main stem and branches of Salvia hispanica plants grown at different sowing dates. A field experiment was conducted in the crop year of 2016/2017 in five sowing dates (16/09/22, 16/10/28, 17/01/03, 17/02/08 and 17/03/24) in a randomized complete block design with four replicates. Harvest at each sowing date was done when 80% of the leaves of each plant exhibited a darker color, indicating that they were dry. Seed yield was determined in each plant compartment (main stem and branches) and final ear length (cm) and diameter (cm) were also measured at all sowing dates. The following physical and physiological tests were performed to determine seed quality: water content, mass of one thousand seeds, germination test, first count germination, length (root and hypocotyl) and dry matter of the seedlings. Chia can be sown from September to February providing seed yield with high physical and physiological quality. The physical and physiological quality of the chia seeds does not differ between main stem and branches. In late sowing, there is the risk of frost occurrence what may impair the physiological quality and the yield of chia seeds. The best sowing month for obtaining higher yield of chia seeds in a south subtropical region is January.

The importance of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.) to the Northeast region of Brazil is undeniable, it is a major crop in local family agriculture. As a result, the research aimed to evaluate the physiological and sanitary quality of local varieties of cowpea coming from the state of Rio Grande do Norte. The experiment was carried out at the Seed Pathology and Seed Analysis Laboratory, in Federal University of Paraíba, Campus II, Areia, Paraiba, Brazil. Six cowpea varieties (Baeta, Coruja, Sempre Verde, Epace 10, Feijão da Bahia and Pingo de Ouro) from rural Area of the municipality of Apodi, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil.were evaluated  Seed physiological quality was evaluated by determining the first germination count (FGC), germination percentage (G%), seedling length (SL) and electrical conductivity (EC). The sanitary quality of the seeds was evaluated by the method of incubation in filter paper (blotter test). The experimental design was completely randomized, with 4 replicates. The Pingo de Ouro, Sempre Verde and Coruja varieties had germination percentages greater than the minimum standards required for commercialization, while the lower germination percentage and vigor of the Feijão da Bahia, Epace 10 and Baeta varieties may be associated with the presence of Aspergillus sp. and Penicillium sp.

During seed extraction in fleshy fruits, some procedures are necessary to ensure seed quality and minimize deterioration and microorganism activity; also seeds extracted under moist conditions need special care when drying. The objective of this study was to evaluate the physiological quality of eggplant seeds submitted to different extraction and drying methods. In the first study, whole eggplant fruits were mechanically crushed and then fermented for 0, 24 and 48 hours, with and without applying hydrochloric acid during seed extraction. In the second study, seeds were extracted in a pepper peeler and then immediately washed in water and submitted to the following drying methods: Sun/24 h; Sun/48 h; 32 °C/24 h; 32 °C/48 h; 38 °C/24 h; 38 °C/48 h; Sun/24 h + 32 °C/24 h; Sun/24 h + 38 °C/24 h e 32 °C/24 h + 38 °C/24 h. The treatment efficiency of both experiments was evaluated from the following tests: seed weight, germination, first count, accelerated aging and seedling emergence. The results suggest that fermentation and applying hydrochloric acid to pulp/seed reduce the physiological seed quality. All drying methods reduced the seed moisture content permitting adequate storage and maintenance of seed physiological quality.

ABSTRACT The germination of papaya seeds is slow and uneven, usually due to inhibitors present in the sarcotesta; however, some removal procedures may cause physical damage, negatively interfering in the physiological quality and field performance. This study aimed to evaluate the physical and physiological quality of papaya seeds submitted to methods of sarcotesta removal by image analysis. Papaya Formosa ‘Tainung 01' seeds were submitted to the following methods of sarcotesta removal: fermentation + sieve, sand + sieve, sieve and blender + sieve. After the sarcotesta removal, the seeds were submitted to tests of germination, first germination count, germination speed and seedling length. For the image analysis, the seeds without sarcotesta were submitted to the X-ray test and to a computerized analysis of seedling images by the SVIS® software. The methods used were only promising for the sarcotesta removal, while the blender + sieve method obtained the highest physical and physiological seed quality, in addition to performing the best sarcotesta removal. However, the image analysis using the SVIS® software allowed to identify the high physical and physiological seed quality using the blender + sieve method, which promoted the highest efficiency in removing the sarcotesta.

Knowledge about seed storage behavior is important to preserve plant species. Clitoria fairchildiana R.A.Howard is an endemic species with medicinal properties, it is used in the recovery of degraded land. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of drying on the physiological quality of C. fairchildiana seeds. Seeds were oven dried along with silica gel for 18 days and in intervals of 2 or 3 days, samples were removed to assess the seed moisture content. This was done in an oven at 105±3 oC for 24h, using four replicates with 10 seeds each. After undergoing the above-mentioned treatment, a sample of seeds was stored in the freezer (-18 ºC) for 3 months. Sowing was carried out in plastic trays in a sand and sawdust mixture (1:1), previously sterilized in hot water (100 oC) for two hours. Seeds were left to germinate in a laboratory with no temperature and relative humidity control. Germination tests were performed over 14 days with daily counts of the number of emerged seedlings. The percentage of seed germination, abnormal seedlings and dead seeds were obtained 14 days after sowing. The experimental design was completely randomized with four replications of 25 seeds. The reduction of seed moisture content from 18.5% to 5.6% affected physiological seed quality causing a reduction in the germination percentage and an increase in dead seeds and abnormal seedling percentage. C. fairchildiana seeds are classified as intermediate and they can be desiccated up to 8.6% with no reduction in physiology quality.

Abstract: The analysis of isoenzyme activity is an important monitoring and characterization tool of the physiological quality of seeds and to understand the deterioration. The purpose of this work was to study the isoenzyme expression allied to the quality of maize hybrid seeds harvested at different moisture levels and subjected to chemical treatment. A completely randomized experimental design was used with four replicates, in a 3x2 factorial arrangement with three moisture levels (45%, 40% and 35%), and two forms of seeds tillage (with and without treatment). Seeds from maize hybrids, semi-hard BM 810 and dented BM 3061, were used. Seeds were manually gathered on ears. Chemical treatment was performed with commercial products Maxin(r) + K-obiol(r) + Actellic(r). Seed quality was assessed by moisture test, incidence of mechanicals damage, first count of germination, germination, emergence, emergence speed index, mean emergence time, accelerated aging, and electrical conductivity. Isoenzyme expressions were assessed by means of the systems superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), esterase (EST), alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH), malate dehydrogenase (MDH), peroxidase (PO) and α-amilase. Isoenzyme expressions are different, depending on moisture levels at harvest, the hybrid maize and seeds quality. Seeds treatment does not interfere in their isoenzymes expression.
