Nowadays, electric power systems have been often operated close to their limits due to increased electric power consumptions, vast installments of renewable power sources and deliberated power market policies. This poses a serious threat to stable network operation and control. Therefore, voltage stability is currently one of key topics worldwide for preventing related black-out and islanding scenarios. In this paper, modelling and simulations of steady-state voltage stability problems in MATLAB environment are performed using author-developed computational tool implementing both conventional and more advanced numerical approaches. Their performance is compared with Simulink-based library Power System Analysis Toolbox (PSAT) in terms of solution accuracy, CPU time, and possible limitations. Their use for both real-time and off-line monitoring and assessment of system's voltage stability are also discussed.

Terahertz (THz) imaging and spectroscopy set-ups require fine optical alignment or precise control of spatial mode profile. We demonstrate universal, convenient and easy-to-use imaging—resonant and broadband antenna coupled ultrasensitive titanium-based—dedicated to accurately adjust and control spatial mode profiles without additional focusing optical components of weak power THz sources. Versatile operation of the devices is shown using different kinds of THz—electronic multiplier sources, optical THz mixer-based frequency domain and femtosecond optoelectronic THz time-domain spectrometers as well as optically pumped molecular THz laser. Features of the microbolometers within 0.15–0.6 THz range are exposed and discussed, their ability to detect spatial mode profiles beyond the antennas resonances, up to 2.52 THz, are explored. Polarization-sensitive mode control possibilities are examined in details. The suitability of the resonant antenna-coupled microbolometers to resolve low-absorbing objects at 0.3 THz is revealed via direct, dark field and phase contrast imaging techniques as well.

"This work presents a simulated study of the energy management of an energy system connected to the grid with photovoltaic generation and battery storage. The work proposes a energy management system based on fuzzy logic. It is intended to be used in the hotel industry. The objective of the proposed controller is to maximise the renewable power source but including also economic criteria in the management. The proposal was implemented in simulation considering a 5,1kW peak photovoltaic installation and a set of batteries with a capacity of 384Ah. First results obtained show that the system achieves the specifications proposed. Thus, the study evidences the potential of the proposed control algorithm and demonstrate the suitability of the use of intelligent techniques for the energy management in hotels."

The DC smart-grid-system (DCSGS) becomes more and more popular and it is seen as an alternative to the AC. In DCSGS, voltage quality and harmonic distortion issues affects the performance of integrated renewable power sources. To improve the voltage quality, SEPIC converter is used to step up the output of PV cell. In DCSGS, output of PV is stepped-up using SEPIC. The output of wind generator is also rectified and stepped-up using SEPIC. This effort covenants with modeling&-simulation of CL(closed-loop)-DC-SGS (smart grid system) with PR controller and FLC in DCSGS. The performance of DCSGS with PR and FLC are compared and their results are presented. The results indicate that FLC controlled close-loop DCSGS gives superior response

The use of the linear magnetostrictive motor (LMM) in outer space, in the absence of Earth’s gravitational field and where extreme temperatures manifest, involves innovative technical solutions that result in significant construction changes. This paper highlights these constructive changes and presents the mathematical modeling followed by the numerical simulation of different operating regimes of LMM. The novelty of the design resides in using a bias coil instead, in addition to permanent magnets, to magnetize the magnetostrictive core and pulse width modulated (PWM) power sources to control the two coils of the LMM (bias and activation). The total absorbed current is less than 2 A, which results in the reduction of Joule losses. Moreover, a PWM source is provided to power and control a set of three Peltier elements aimed at cooling the device. The experiments validate the design of the LMM, which elicits it to power and control devices that may modulate fuel injection for rocket engines or for machines used to adjust positioning on circumterrestrial orbits.

With the increasing penetration of renewable resources such as wind and solar, the operation and planning of power systems, especially in terms of large-scale integration, are faced with great risks due to the inherent stochasticity of natural resources. Although this uncertainty can be anticipated, the timing, magnitude, and duration of fluctuations cannot be predicted accurately. In addition, the outputs of renewable power sources are correlated in space and time, and this brings further challenges for predicting the characteristics of their future behavior. To address these issues, this paper describes an unsupervised method for renewable scenario forecasts that considers spatiotemporal correlations based on generative adversarial networks (GANs), which have been shown to generate high-quality samples. We first utilized an improved GAN to learn unknown data distributions and model the dynamic processes of renewable resources. We then generated a large number of forecasted scenarios using stochastic constrained optimization. For validation, we used power-generation data from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory wind and solar integration datasets. The experimental results validated the effectiveness of our proposed method and indicated that it has significant potential in renewable scenario analysis.
