Objective: This cross-sectional school based study aimed to assess the reliability of Fishman and Nolla methods in predicting the chronological age for Yemeni children. Material and Methods: Orthopantomographs and left handwrist radiographs were taken for 358 Yemeni children (193 boys and 165 girls) 8 - 16 years. Skeletal age estimated by Fishman method and dental age estimated by Nolla method were compared to chronological age using SPSS version 21, statistical significance was predetermined at P < 0.05 , using Intraclass Correlation Coefficient- ICC and Wilcoxon signed rank test. Results: The mean chronological, skeletal and dental ages were 12.00 ± 2.25 years, 12.39 ± 1.65 years and 11.32 ± 2.65 years, respectively. Intraclass correlation coefficient showed strong correlation between chronological age and skeletal and dental ages. Wilcoxon test showed Fishman method significantly underestimated the chronological age by 0.44 ± 1.26 years in boys and non-significantly underestimated the chronological age by 0.02 ± 1.08 years in girls. Nolla method significantly underestimated the chronological age by 0.59 ± 1.28 years in boys and 0.78 ± 1.21 years in girls. Conclusions: Chronological age of Yemeni children is highly correlated to skeletal age estimated by Fishman method and dental age estimated by Nolla method. Objectives: To compare Demirjian Dental scoring method with Greulich-Pyle (GP) Skeletal method of age estimation in pubertal children. Materials and Methods: Sample of the study included 267 male healthy subjects of 11-16 years of age group.. Demirjian Scoring system was utilized to evaluate the orthopantomograms to assess their Dental age and the Hand-Wrist radiographs were analyzed to calculate the skeletal age by utilizing GP atlas. Chronological age was obtained from the date of birth of the subject .Both methods were compared with one another and with the chronological age. It was a cross-sectional study and only healthy male subjects without any clinical abnormalities were included in the study. Results: A total of 267 male subjects of 11-16 years of age group were assessed by Demirjian and Greulich Pyle Methods. Both were compared with Chronological Age. Data obtained was statistically analyzed and the Student “t” test was applied in the study population. The mean difference between Chronolgical age and dental age was 0.69years and that of chronological age and skeletal age was 0.87 years. It was observed from dental age assessment that it does not differ much from the skeletal age. Conclusion: It was concluded that Demirjian method of Age Estimation is more precise than Greulich Pyle method of Age Estimation. Furthermore both methods can be used selectively in Medicolegal cases to access bone age which can be easily correlated to chronological age.

ABSTRACT Aim The aim of this study was to evaluate the maturity levels of the individual by comparing the correlation between dental, skeletal and the chronological ages. Materials and methods Intraoral periapical radiographs of the complete right side of the dentition and posteroanterior radiographs of the hand and wrist were obtained from 260 subjects, ranged from 3 to 15 years of age. Evaluation of handwrist roentgenograms for skeletal age and intraoral roentgenograms for dental age was done. Results The findings of present study indicated that participated children were skeletally and dentally, retarded in maturation as compared with the standards except at 3 and 6 years of age. The girls were found to be skeletally more advanced than boys at all ages except 7 and 10 years of age. The dental maturity is more for girls than that of boys. Conclusion No significant correlation was found among skeletal age, dental age and chronological age. Dental age and skeletal age was found to be correlated at 6, 10 and 11 years in boys and 6 and 9 years of age in girls. Clinical significance The results of this study could enhance the diagnosis and treatment planning in orthodontics and other dental disciplines. OBJECTIVE: report two cases of age estimation using the method developed by Kvaal et al. (1995).CASE DESCRIPTION: two males, apparently older and without identity documents, underwent age estimation tests by the Public Ministry in order to estimate chronological age. This method proposes a specific formula for dental elements present with error margin of 11.5 years. After this stage, new civil records were carried out, entitling the cases to some social benefits.CONCLUSION: age estimation in living individuals is a challenge but significantly important in the civil and penal spheres, and Kvaal’s technique may be used in Brazilian older adults.
