Combination method of strain-rate cycling tests and application of ultrasonic oscillations was conducted for KCl:Sr2+ (0.035, 0.050, 0.065 mol.% in the melt) single crystals at low temperatures. The measurement of strain-rate sensitivity (λ) of flow stress under the application of ultrasonic oscillatory stress provides useful information on the interaction between a mobile dislocation and impurities (Sr2+ ions) during plastic deformation and the variation of λ with stress decrement (Δτ) due to oscillation has stair-like shape: The first plateau place ranges below the first bending point (τp1) at low stress decrement and the second one extends from the second bending point (τp2) at high stress decrement. The value of λ decreases with the Δτ between the two bending points. The τp1 is considered to represent the effective stress due to impurities when a dislocation begins to break-away from the impurities with the help of thermal activation during plastic deformation. Annealing the impure crystal by heat treatment, τp1 decreases obviously at low temperature and the critical temperature Tc, at which τp1 is zero, also becomes slightly smaller. Furthermore, it was investigated whether a change in the state of a small amount of impurities has an influential factor of the flow parameters (e.g., the activation energy, the density of forest dislocations) from the data analyzed in terms of Δτ vs. λ curve.

The paper presents the results of physical modelling of the plastic deformation of the Mg/Al bimetallic specimens using the Gleeble 3800 simulator. The plastic deformation of Mg/Al bimetal specimens characterized by the diameter to thickness ratio equal to 1 was tested in compression tests. The aim of this work was determination of the range of parameters as temperature and strain rate that mainly influence on the plastic deformation of Mg/Al bars during metal forming processes. The tests were carried out for temperature range from 300 to 400°C for different strain rate values. The stock was round 22.5 mm-diameter with an Al layer share of 28% Mg/Al bars that had been produced using the explosive welding method. Based on the analysis of the obtained testing results it has been found that one of the main process parameters influencing the plastic deformation the bimetal components is the initial stock temperature and strain rate values.

An understanding of the plastic deformation behavior of Ti6Al4V (Ti64) is of great interest because it is used in aerospace applications due to its high specific strength. In addition, Ti alloys have limited slip systems due to hexagonal crystal structure; hence twinning plays an important role in plastic deformation. The present work focuses upon the grain size effect on plastic deformation behaviour of Ti64. Various microstructures with different grain size were developed via annealing of Ti64 alloy in α-β phase regime (825°C and 850°C) for 4 hours followed by air cooling. The deformation behavior of these samples was investigated at various deformation temperature and strain rate conditions. Detailed microstructure studies showed that (i) smaller grains undergoes twinning only at low temperature and high strain rate, (ii) large grain samples undergo twinning at all temperatures & strain rates, though the extent of twinning varied.

The crack propagation process in single-crystal aluminum plate (SCAP) with central cracks under tensile load was simulated by molecular dynamics method. Further, the effects of model size, crack length, temperature, and strain rate on strength of SCAP and crack growth were comprehensively investigated. The results showed that, with the increase of the model size, crack length, and strain rate, the plastic yield point of SCAP occurred in advance, the limit stress of plastic yield decreased, and the plastic deformability of material increased, but the temperature had less effect and sensitivity on the strength and crack propagation of SCAP. The model size affected the plastic deformation and crack growth of the material. Specifically, at small scale, the plastic deformation and crack propagation in SCAP are mainly affected through dislocation multiplication and slip. However, the plastic deformation and crack propagation are obviously affected by dislocation multiplication and twinning in larger scale.

Abstract This paper contains results of creep and relaxation tests on an oxygen-free copper at temperatures up to 235 C. The effect of the stress and the temperature upon the strain rate has been noted and an effort has been made to correlate the results of the two different types of tests by using various theories of plastic deformation.
