Communicative expression is a cross-species phenomenon. We investigated the perceptual attributes of social expressions encoded in human-like animal stickers commonly used as nonverbal communicative tools on social media (e.g. WeChat). One hundred and twenty animal stickers which varied in 12 categories of social expressions (serving pragmatic or emotional functions), 5 animal kinds (cats, dogs, ducks, rabbits, pigs) and 2 presented forms (real animal vs. cartoon animal) were presented to social media users, who were asked to rate on the human likeness, the cuteness, the expressiveness and the matchness of each intended expression against the given label. The data shows that the kind of animal that is expected to best encode a certain expression is modulated by its presented forms. The “cuteness” stereotype towards a certain kind of animal is sometimes violated as a function of the presented forms. Moreover, user’s gender, interpersonal sensitivity and attitudes towards the ethic use of animals modulated various perceptual attributes. These findings highlight the factors underlying the decoding of social meanings in human-like animal stickers as nonverbal cues in virtual communication.

Despite research work achieving progress in preserving the privacy of user profiles and visual surveillance, correcting problems in social media have not taken a great step. The reason is the lack of effective modelling, computational algorithms, and resultant evaluations in quantitative research. In this article, the authors take social media into consideration and link users together under the umbrella of social networks so as to exploit a way that the potential problems related to media privacy could be solved. The author's contributions are to propose tensor product-based progressive scrambling approaches for privacy preservation of social media and apply our approaches to the given social media which may encapsulate privacy before being viewed so as to achieve the goal of privacy preservation in anonymity, diverse and closeness. These approaches fully preserve the media information of the scrambled image and make sure it is able to be restored. The results show the proposed privacy persevering approaches are effective and have outstanding performance in media privacy preservation.

The study examines the influence of social media on Gen Y employees' engagement. Hypotheses are developed to explain the influence of social media on Gen Y employees' engagement. A sample of 256 Indian Gen Y employees from IT industry participated in the survey. Structural equation modeling is used to test the research hypotheses. Findings reveal that social media has a significant positive effect on Gen Y employees' engagement. It is revealed that social media moderates the relationship of HR practices (communication, collaboration; knowledge sharing and recognition) and engagement in Gen Y employees. While the scope of this study is limited to IT industry and results may not generalize to different industries in different regions. The historical trajectory examined in this book demonstrates that humans’ reactions to machines that are programmed to simulate intelligent behaviors represent a constitutive element of what is commonly called AI. Artificial intelligence technologies are not just designed to interact with human users: they are designed to fit specific characteristics of the ways users perceive and navigate the external world. Communicative AI becomes more effective not only by evolving from a technical standpoint but also by profiting, through the dynamics of banal deception, from the social meanings humans project onto situations and things. In this conclusion, the risks and problems related to AI’s banal deception are explored in relationship with other AI-based technologies such as robotics and social media bots. A call is made for initiating a more serious debate about the role of deception in interface design and computer science. The book concludes with a reflection on the need to develop a critical and skeptical stance in interactions with computing technologies and AI. In order not to be found unprepared for the challenges posed by AI, computer scientists, software developers, designers as well as users have to consider and critically interrogate the potential outcomes of banal deception.

The use, potential and challenges of social media in innovation have received little attention in the literature, especially from the standpoint of the business-to-business sector. Therefore, this paper focuses on bridging this gap. The purpose of this paper is to study the use and potential of social media in the innovation context, especially from the perspective of business-to-business companies. The paper starts by defining of social media and Web 2.0, and then characterizes social media in business, social media in the business-to-business sector and social media in the business-to-business innovation process. The paper also studies the essential differences between business-to-consumer and business-to-business in the given respects. Finally the authors present and analyze the results of their empirical survey of 110 respondents from Finnish companies. The results suggest that there is a significant gap between the perceived extensive potential of social media and current social media use in innovation in business-to-business companies. They have also identified potentially effective ways to reduce the gap, and clarify the found differences between B2B’s and B2C’s.

The use of social media, such as social networking sites and instant messaging, in everyday life continues to spread, along with social media use in the workplace. This study examined how using social media like Facebook (social networking sites) and KakaoTalk (instant messaging) at work affects individual job performance. It also analyzed whether social media use has different effects on individual job performance depending on the characteristics of the given task. The results demonstrated that both Facebook and KakaoTalk had linearly positive effects on individual job performance. Moreover, task equivocality had a positive moderating effect on the relationship between KakaoTalk use and job performance. The results may have significant implications for firms reviewing their policies on employees’ social media use. Since using social media such as Facebook and KakaoTalk in the workplace improves job performance, firms may consider encouraging employees toward this practice. In particular, they may consider supporting those employees who perform tasks with high task equivocality in making use of instant messaging platforms.

Psychological stress has become a common condition in today's world owing to the busy life style and competitive environment. This has led to increase of suicidal rates in the recent years. Lately, there has been a tremendous increase in interactions in the social networking sites. As people are spending long hours in the virtual world it is easier to detect and analyze the stress levels of the social media users. In this paper, we have proposed a hybrid approach which is a combination of Factor Graph (FG) model and Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to analyze the textual contents in social media users’ tweets and posts to detect the level of stress of a user. The tweets of an individual user are gathered from Twitter platform which is preprocessed and passed to the cross autoencoder embedded CNN Model which outputs user level attributes. These are then input to the Factor Graph model that detects the stressed tweets. A mechanism has been proposed to inform the friends or relatives of the concerned stressed user if the detected stress level is above the given threshold
