Born in Grundy, Virginia, in the coalfields of the southwestern section of the state, Lee Smith depicts an Appalachia steeped in family and community relationships, in supernatural and religious powers, and in musical and cultural traditions through which characters navigate a changing and modernizing world. Smith attended Hollins College, then a women’s college. While there, she studied with Louis Rubin, a leading scholar of southern literature; her classmates included a remarkable number of women who, like Smith, went on to pursue literary careers—for example, author Annie Dillard and literary scholars Lucinda MacKethon and Anne Goodwin Jones....

The International research conference “Rumyantsev readings–2009” held on April 21-23, 2009 in the Russian state library was attended by over 290 people from various cities and regions of Russia and from the state-participants CIS. The theme of Conference of this year was “Historical and cultural traditions and innovative transformations of Russia. Educational responsibility of libraries”. The conference presented a unique book project on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of M.V. Lomonosov – “Lomonosovskaya Library”.

I come from Iran, an immense country of more than 77 million inhabitants, the cradle of Persian civilization, and one of the richest and most ancient cultural traditions of humankind, with deep values of respect and tolerance. 38 years ago there was an Islamic revolution that turned Iran into a country that has Islam as an official religion and in which laws must conform to Sharia or Islamic law. I belong to the Christian minority, officially recognised in the Iranian constitution, but only for those born in an ethnically Christian family. People who, like me, were born into an Islamic family and converted to Christianity, are considered apostates and guilty of a serious crime under Sharia. In the last year alone about 200 people who have been accused of apostasy have been imprisoned and many have been tortured. That was the reason I was detained. We Christians are no threat to the national security of Iran. We are not going against the State. But we are treated as such. We, although citizens of Iran, are under Criminal Law, the Enemy.

The paper is aimed at studying the features of the migration legislation of Japan and the study of the legal status of the immigration bureau of this state. Japan is a country that has passed a special path of historical development. In many ways, this specificity was due to the state policy of isolationism. The existing cultural traditions largely determine the attitude of the Japanese government to immigration. The paper studies the history of the formation of migration control authorities of the state in question, the peculiarities of the legal status of the Immigration Bureau of the Ministry of Justice of Japan and its structure, analyzes the powers of the Immigration Bureau employees. The paper also provides information on the size of the Immigration Bureau and state funding of the activities of this body.

Research on migration has often characterized migration and the state as being in conflict. International migration does present some challenges to the state in accommodating migrants that bring with them various cultural and social identities. Nonetheless, not all migration experiences can be generalized in dichotomous terms. In this sense, the case of the first South American country to elect a president of Japanese origin and to regard a Chinese migrant-owned supermarket chain as representative of the state’s business model merits closer examination. The experience of Chinese and Japanese migrants in Peru contributes to the literature on transnational migration that regards migrants as both recipients of change and agents that influence a state’s national identity. Through measures such as common language acquisition and the adoption of new cultural traditions, Chinese and Japanese migrants were integrated into Peru and thus influenced some changes in the state’s national identity in a less conflictive way.外来移民给移入国带来不同的文化和社会认同,从而带来一系列挑战。故在现有移民研究中,移民和移入国常被认为处于冲突状态。然而并非所有移民都与移入国文化对立。本文将日裔移民首次当选拉丁美洲国家总统及中国连锁超市成为移入国商业模范作为案例,对此观点进行阐述。本文指出,秘鲁的中国和日本移民在被移入国改变的同时,也影响了移入国的国家认同。中国及日本移民通过语言习得和文化适应融入秘鲁社会,进而通过较为平和的方式给秘鲁的国家认同带来了影响。This article is in English.

The aim of the study is to develop the concept of “nation-building” as a socio-political project that is adequate to the national ethno-socio-cultural traditions, aimed at improving national security and strengthening the political stability of the entire Russian multinational society in the face of new chal- lenges. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the conceptual generalization of new problems, challenges and risks of constructing the concept of “nation-build- ing”, which require fundamental theoretical understanding within the framework of domestic ethnopolitical science. The article uses an interdisciplinary methodology in the development of the socio-political concept of “nation-building”. The use of socio-cultural analysis made it possible to adapt the concept of “nation-building” to Russian political traditions and values. Comparative political analysis allowed us to compare domestic and foreign approaches to the formation of nation-building. The sys- tematic method revealed the structural elements of the state policy of nation- building in Russia.The result of the research is the proposed socio-political concept, which depends on the role of the state and the challenges of modernity in the Russian ethno-political process and the formation of a civil nation.

This chapter discusses Lee Smith's fiction, which consistently probes the crises of identity that plague so many contemporary Americans, particularly women. Born on November 1, 1944, in the southwestern Virginia coal-mining town of Grundy, Lee Smith was an only child and a voracious reader. Smith recalls that growing up in Grundy, she consciously tried to conform to the image of an aspiring southern “lady.” Initially Smith wrote about romantic and foreign subjects, but after encountering Eudora Welty's work in a southern literature course, she realized the importance of writing from one's experience. Like other members of her generation of southern writers, Smith creates a full, complex world of characters who confirm some stereotypes and transcend others. Her novels include The Last Day the Dogbushes Bloomed (1968), The Last Day the Dogbushes Bloomed— Something in the Wind (1971), Fancy Strut (1973), Black Mountain Breakdown (1980), Family Linen (1985), Fair and Tender Ladies (1988), Saving Grace (1995), and On Agate Hill (2006).

Researched are priorities of military education in the context of national interests and cultural traditions of Russia. The author reveals the problems of organizing military education associated with the change of global ideology and the loss of ideological foundations within the country, the adoption of Western models of education that contradict national cultural traditions. Based on the needs of the state, the author identifies priorities in organizing the training of military specialists. The most important of them are the education of a warrior’s personality, that is, the formation of moral and combat qualities as the basis for the training of military specialists and the expansion, in connection with this, of the interpretation of “competence”, as well as a change in the ideology of the development and content of the Federal state educational standard (FSES) for the training of military specialists.
