Background: Salivary gland tumors include a wide variety of benign and malignant tumors in the oral and maxillofacial region. Although these tumors are not common, they are not rare. The prevalence of these tumors varies with regard to age, gender, and their location in the body. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the frequency of benign and malignant salivary gland tumors in patients referred to three referral hospitals in Tehran, Iran. Methods: This retrospective cross-sectional study examined the demographic and pathologic records of the patients with salivary gland tumors submitted to the Department of Pathology of Amir Alam, Loghman Hakim, and Shohada Hospitals from 2005 to 2016. In this study, the histological variants of salivary gland tumors and clinical parameters such as age, gender, and the location of the tumor were examined. The clinical data were analyzed using SPSS software version 21. Results: Of 137632 patient records, 1180 cases were salivary gland tumors. Pleomorphic adenoma in 794 cases (67.3%) and adenoid cystic carcinoma in 109 cases (9.2%) were the most common tumors, respectively. Salivary gland tumors were more common in males, and the participants’ mean age was 42.86 ± 16.5 years. The most common site was parotid and minor salivary glands, with 937 (79.4%) and 137 (12%) cases, respectively. Conclusions: In this study, the most common benign tumor was pleomorphic adenoma in the parotid gland, and the most common malignant tumor was adenoid cystic carcinoma in the major salivary glands. Furthermore, benign tumors were more frequent than malignant tumors.

Tumors of the salivary glands are uncommon head and neck neoplasia. We conducted a retrospective study of 392 cases over the last 6 years in Shiraz, south of Iran, to investigate the clinicopathological features of these tumors in Iranian population. The age of the patients ranged from 8 to 85 years, with the mean age years and male-to-female (M : F) ratio was 1.02 : 1. For benign tumors, there was a propensity towards females, whereas the malignant tumor was more common in males. The ratio of benign tumors to malignancies was 2.19 : 1. Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) was the most common tumor and accounted for 85% of all benign tumors, followed by Warthin's tumor (8.6%). Of the 125 malignancies, adenoid cystic carcinoma (40%), mucoepidermoid carcinoma (24%) and invasive squamous cell carcinoma (16%) were the most common histological types. Most of the salivary gland tumors (75%) originated from major salivary glands and the remained (25%) originated from minor glands. The parotid gland was the most common site both in benign and malignant tumors. Most of our findings were similar to those in the literature, with some variations. The salivary tumors slightly predominated in males. Adenoid cystic carcinoma and mucoepidermoid carcinoma constituted the most common malignancies.

Salivary gland tumors constitute a highly heterogeneous histopathologic group. There are few epidemiological studies of large series of benign and malignant salivary gland tumors in Brazil. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Hospital records of 124 patients with salivary gland tumors diagnosed from January 1993 to December 1999 were reviewed. The patients were analyzed according to gender, age, size, location, and histopathology of the tumor. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Patients with benign and malignant tumors presented with a mean age of 47.7 and 48.8 years, respectively. The frequency of benign tumors was 80% (n = 99) and malignant tumors 20% (n = 25). Tumors were localized in the parotid gland 71% (n = 88), in the submandibular gland 24% (n = 30), and in the minor salivary glands 5% (n = 6). The most common benign tumors were pleomorphic adenoma in 84% (n = 84) and Warthin's tumor in 13% (n = 13). Among malignant tumors, mucoepidermoid carcinoma was the most common in 52% (n = 13), adenoid cystic carcinoma occurred in 20% (n = 5), and carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma was detected in 12% (n = 3).

Objectives Kallikrein-related peptidase 10 (KLK10) has been implicated in the development of several types of cancer. The purpose of this study was to analyze the expression of KLK10 in 3 types of salivary gland tumour and normal salivary glands. Materials and methods: A standard immunoperoxidase staining technique was used to assess the Immunoexpression profile of KLK10 in normal salivary glands and 3 types of salivary gland tumour: pleomorphic adenoma, adenoid cystic carcinoma and mucoepidermoid carcinoma. Results Pleomorphic adenomas showed significantly lower KLK10 levels than control tissues. Neither of the malignant tumours (adenoid cystic carcinoma and mucoepidermoid carcinoma) showed a significant alteration in the immunoreactive scores of KLK10 in comparison with the normal salivary gland tissues. KLK10 immunoreactive scores were comparable in adenoid cystic carcinoma and mucoepidermoid carcinoma. Pleomorphic adenoma had significantly lower levels of KLK10 than mucoepidermoid carcinoma. Conclusions The finding of lower KLK10 levels in pleomorphic adenoma suggests aberrant expression in a tumour that develops primarily from myoepithelial cells. A kallikrein cascade may play a role in the development and/or outcome of some salivary gland tumours.

AbstractSalivary gland tumors account for less than 3% of the head and neck tumors. Among various salivary gland tumors, pleomorphic adenoma is most common and accounts for 60- 70% of the benign tumors of salivary glands. However, the involvement of minor salivary glands of buccal mucosa is extremely uncommon and reported to be 4% only. Salivary glands may present with a diverse range of lesions presenting a challenge to even the most experienced clinician. We report two rare cases of pleomorphic adenoma of minor salivary glands of buccal mucosa in a 45 year old female and 70 years old male respectively. It includes clinical features, diagnosis and treatment of the tumor.

Introduction: Salivary gland tumors are rare, comprising about 3% of all head and neck neoplasms. About 80% of the tumors are in parotids, 10% in submandibular glands and the remainders are distributed in sublingual and minor salivary glands. This study was conducted to evaluate the relative frequencies, types, site of distribution and the histopathological features of salivary gland tumors. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in the Department of Pathology, Manipal College of Medical Sciences, Pokhara from January 2011 to December 2019. Ethical approval was taken from the institutional review committee of Manipal College of Medical Sciences (Ref: 314). Convenient sampling was done among specimen. Data were entered in Microsoft Excel and analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 21. Results: Among the 130 specimens, the patients’ age ranged from 6 to 78 years with a mean age of 37.26 years for benign tumors and 48.45 years for malignant tumors. There was female predominance with a male to female ratio of 1:1.36. There were 98 cases of benign tumors, commonest being pleomorphic adenoma with 82 (83.67%) cases which was noticed more frequently in fourth decade of life. Among the 32 malignant tumors, mucoepidermoid carcinoma was the commonest tumor 20 (62.5%), followed by adenoid cystic carcinoma 7 (23.33%). Conclusions: Benign salivary gland tumors were more common than malignant tumors and the most common site of location was the parotid for both the benign and malignant tumors. Female outnumbered the male population in benign tumors whereas males were slightly more than females in malignant tumors. This study corroborated well with other previously published studies.

Background: Imaging of salivary gland tumors is a challenge for the radiologist due to varied histological features and overlapping clinical presentation.The salivary glands have a glandular structure with tubules, secretory acini and myoepithelial cells to produce and secrete saliva. They are divided into two types: major and minor. Parotid, submandibular, and sublingual glands are the major paired salivary glands of the body. Multiple small minor salivary glands are distributed in the upper aerodigestive tract including PNS & parapharyngeal spaces. Objective: This study evaluates the role of different modalities used to assess salivary gland tumors. Results: 50 patients presenting with suspected salivary gland masses were evaluated. 22 males and 28 females were assessed with age ranging from 15 to 66 years (mean age of 52 years). 27 cases were of pleomorphic adenoma, 10 warthin tumors, 2 intraductal papilloma,1 lipoma, 1 oncocytoma,1 intra parotid paraganglioma, 2 hemangioma, 3 muco-epidermoid carcinoma, 2 adeno cystic cancer and 1 acinic cell cancer of salivary gland. 90% of patients (45 out of 50) presented with swelling / lump. 26% of patients had pain /discomfort and 4% of patients (2 out of 50) had facial nerve palsy. Conclusion: The conventional radiological evaluation was carried out using Xray and ultrasound with USG as rst line of investigation.. Cross sectional imaging with CT and MRI is useful in assessing for local extension , invasion of neighbouring structures as well as lymph nodal and systemic metastasis.MRI is superior to CT in assesing for extent and perineural spread.

Background: Salivary gland tumors constitute a highly heterogeneous histopathologic group. There are few epidemiological studies of large series of benign and malignant epithelial tumors of major salivary glands in South India.Methods: This is a retrospective study in a tertiary care centre in Kerala, South India. A total of 180 epithelial neoplasms of major salivary gland were studied over a 5 year period. In each case age, sex, anatomical location and histopathological diagnosis were recorded.Results: Patients with benign and malignant tumors presented with a mean age of 52.3 and 55.9 years respectively. The frequency of benign tumors was 80.6% (n = 145) and of malignant tumors was 19.4% (n = 35). There was a higher prevalence of tumors in males 60.6% (n = 109) than in females 39.4% (n = 71). 91.9% (n = 164) of the tumors were localized in the parotid gland, 8.3% (n = 15) in the submandibular gland and 0.6% (n = 1) in the sublingual gland. The most common benign tumors were Pleomorphic adenoma (48.9%, n = 88) and Warthin’s tumor (28.9%, n = 52). Among malignant tumors, Mucoepidermoid carcinoma was the most common (9.5%, n = 17) followed by Carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma (2.8%, n = 5) and adenoid cystic carcinoma (2.2%, n = 4).Conclusions: Parotid gland was the most common site of both benign and malignant tumours. Plemorphic adenoma was the most common benign tumor and mucoepidermoid carcinoma was the most common malignant tumor.

Malignant tumours of the salivary glands in children are extremely rare. We present here a 12-year-old girl initially diagnosed as pleomorphic adenoma on fine needle aspiration biopsy, and adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) after the lesion was excised and examined by histopathology. A wide resection of the lesion and bilateral supraomyohyoid neck dissection was performed. To our knowledge this is one of the youngest patients with ACC of the minor salivary glands. Due to its benign histological appearance, the biological agressiveness of ACC is usually underestimated. Although fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is very valuable in diagnosis, cytological variations of pleomorphic adenoma must be considered. ACC of the tongue in a young age group should be treated with wide resection and selective neck dissection if the tumour is localized in places where the risk of metastasis is increased and if there is a clinically palpable lymph node. In such cases the clinician should not avoid radical operations even in a young patient.

Abstract Objective.—CD34-positive dendritic interstitial cells may be associated with the regulation of tumor growth. This association has been studied in various human neoplasms, especially skin tumors. In this study, we evaluated the distribution of dendritic interstitial cells and myofibroblastic cells at the tumor periphery of various benign and malignant salivary gland neoplasms. Methods.—Forty-nine cases of salivary gland tumors were selected: 16 pleomorphic adenomas, 12 Warthin tumors, 8 polymorphous low-grade tumors, 5 adenoid cystic carcinomas, 6 acinic cell carcinomas, and 2 mucoepidermoid carcinomas. Immunohistochemical analysis was performed by using antibodies for CD34 (dendritic cells) and α-smooth muscle actin (myofibroblast) on formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded archival tissue. Staining intensity was graded as marked (3+), moderate (2+), weak (1+), and absent (0). Results.—Staining intensity for CD34 was 3+ in 24 (86%) of 28 benign tumors (pleomorphic adenomas and Warthin tumors) and 6 (29%) of 21 malignant tumors (polymorphous low-grade tumors, acinic cell carcinomas, adenoid cystic carcinomas, and mucoepidermoid carcinomas) and 2+ in 4 (19%) of 21 malignant tumors. None of the benign tumors displayed 2+ staining with CD34. Three (11%) of 28 benign and 11 (52%) of 21 of malignant tumors failed to stain with CD34. α-Smooth muscle actin staining was 3+ in 10 (36%) of 28 benign tumors and 6 (29%) of 21 malignant tumors, and 2+ in 11 (39%) of 28 benign and 2 (9%) of 21 malignant tumors. Five (18%) of 28 benign and 11 (52%) of 21 malignant tumors failed to stain with α-smooth muscle actin. Conclusion.—We conclude that the dendritic interstitial cells and myofibroblastic cells may be associated with the regulation of tumor growth in salivary gland tumors.

Objective To analyze the expression of human kallikrein 14 (KLK14) in salivary gland tumors. Methods A standard immunoperoxidase staining technique was used to assess the expression profile of KLK14 in normal salivary glands and tumors including pleomorphic adenoma (PA; n=17), adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC; n=13) and mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC; n=9). Tumor stage, grade, patient age and gender, and site of occurrence were recorded. These clinical parameters were correlated with KLK14 levels in malignant tumors. The expression profiles for KLK3, 5, 6, 8 and 13 were also retrieved. Results Normal salivary glands, PA, ACC and MEC showed strong expression of KLK14 in ductal and non-ductal cells. Both PA and ACC showed higher KLK14 levels than normal glands and MEC tissues. There were no statistically significant associations between levels of KLK14 and clinical parameters. Conclusions The differences in the levels of KLK14 suggest that KLKs may aid in the differential diagnosis of salivary gland tumors. The coexpression of KLKs suggests their possible involvement in an enzymatic pathway activated in salivary gland. KLK14 may be a promising new biomarker in salivary gland tumors.
