Garden peas commonly carry a nucleus of plants with bacterial blight (Pseudomonas pisi Sackett) in a masked form. When such plants were exposed to low temperature, either by natural frosting or by dipping the tops of the plants in cold liquids, the number of bacteria in the tissues increased rapidly and typical symptoms of the disease occurred in a few days. Soil type and soil moisture content also influenced the development of the disease, which was more marked in peas grown on a red loam from the Dickson Experiment Station than in peas grown on a prepared potting soil. Disease symptoms developed more rapidly a t high soil moisture content than at lower soil moisture content, following exposure to high atmospheric humidity.

Variations in the network are related both to transient characteristics of the catchment, including precipitation, soil moisture content and discharge, and to more permanent characteristics including vegetation and rock type.

The relationship between spatial and temporal dynamics of major salt ions and their toxicology is still unclear, particularly in perennial orchard fields. A seasonal soil sampling was conducted from Apr. to Oct. 2011 in a salinized orchard soil in semiarid northwest China. Soil moisture content and concentrations of total soluble salt and eight salt ions were measured every 2 weeks in the soil at 0 to 2, 2 to 5, 5 to 10, 10 to 15, 15 to 20, 20 to 25, 25 to 40, 40 to 60, 60 to 80, and 80 to 120 cm during the growing period of apple trees. Soil moisture content decreased early in the growth season (Period 1) but with increasing rainfall in the middle of growing season (Period 2 and Period 3) and reached a maximum at late season (Period 4) at all depths. Soil salt concentration increased along with soil profile, particularly in the 60- to 120-cm soil layer at all periods. The highest soil salt level was observed in Period 4. The contents of HCO3–, Ca2+, and Mg2+ were almost uniform in all soil layers, but the contents of Cl–, SO42–, and Na+ increased with soil layer. The content of K+ decreased from the upper to the deeper layers of soil profile. The distribution of CO32– had a high temporal and spatial heterogeneity with soil depths and season. Analysis of the charge balance on positive and negative salt ions indicated that the horizontal movement of ions and the transfer of soil water were likely the driving factors affecting soil salinization. The movement of Na+ and Mg2+ ions in the top soil may be responsible for rhizospheric ions composition and toxin effect to restrain apple tree growth in the early growth period.

The effects of shoot moisture content, region of shoot, age of shoot, temperature, relative humidity, and soil moisture content on the development of cankers caused by Cytospora chrysosperma (Pers.) Fr. were studied in Populus trichocarpa Torr. and Gray, P. × canadensis Moench 'Regenerata', and P. × canadensis 'Robusta Bachelieri'. Within the range studied, canker growth varied proportionally with temperature, and inversely with shoot moisture content, relative humidity, and soil moisture content. Canker growth was greater in P. trichocarpa than in the two hybrids, which did not differ significantly from each other. Canker growth was less in 8-month-old than in 10- and 12-month-old shoots of the hybrids, but cankers on P. trichocarpa showed no differences in this respect. The critical bark moisture deficit for infection was least in P. trichocarpa, intermediate in P. 'Regenerata', and greatest in P. 'Robusta'. The critical bark moisture deficit was greater, and the incubation period was shorter, in the upper part than in the lower part of the shoot.

This  study deals with the soil moisture distribution and its effect on the  potential growth and    adaptation of the over-story species in north-east Chalkidiki. These  species are: Quercus    dalechampii Ten, Quercus  conferta Kit, Quercus  pubescens Willd, Castanea  sativa Mill, Fagus    moesiaca Maly-Domin and also Taxus baccata L. in mixed stands  with Fagus moesiaca.    Samples of soil, 1-2 kg per 20cm depth, were taken and the moisture content  of each sample    was measured in order to determine soil moisture distribution and its  contribution to the growth    of the forest species. The most important results are: i) available water  is influenced by the soil    depth. During the summer, at a soil depth of 10 cm a significant  restriction was observed. ii) the    large duration of the dry period in the deep soil layers has less adverse  effect on stands growth than in the case of the soil surface layers, due to the fact that the root system mainly spreads out    at a soil depth of 40 cm iii) in the beginning of the growing season, the  soil moisture content is    greater than 30 % at a soil depth of 60 cm, in beech and mixed beech-yew  stands, is 10-15 % in    the Q. pubescens  stands and it's more than 30 % at a soil depth of 60 cm in Q. dalechampii    stands.
