Curriculum movements in the United States and Australia, characterized by such documents as Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics(NCTM 1989) and A National Statement on Mathematics for Australian Schools (AEC 1991), have challenged the conventional view of algebra as formal structure, arguing that algebra is fundamentally the study of patterns and relationships. Increased emphasis has been given to developing an understanding of variables, expressions, and equations and to presenting informal methods of solving equations. The emphasis on symbol manipulation and on drill and practice in solving equations has decreased (NCTM 1989).

The article discusses the features and main approaches of Turkish foreign policy in the Middle East. Particular attention is paid to the history of the development of Turkish-American relations. The causes of the contradictions between Turkey and the United States on the security issues of the Middle East region are analyzed. At the same time, the commonality of the approaches of both countries in countering radical terrorism in the territories adjacent to Turkey is noted. The article also discusses the priority areas of Turkish foreign policy, new approaches and technologies in the first decade of the XXI century.

But for the men tally retarded offender no such new approaches have been de vised ; he is still relegated to, and unwanted by, both the tradition al correctional system and the institutions for the retarded.

Seafood has emerged as a key testing ground for understanding the role of different value chain actors in driving sustainability. The conventional view, developed in the late 1990s, is that sustainable seafood is driven by the choices and practices of consumers in major importing markets, such as the United States and the European Union. This view led to the development of a range of boycott and buycott initiatives in the 2000s. Many of the buycott initiatives have been formalised into consumer-facing tools, such as certification, recommendation lists, and traceability. More recently celebrity chefs have also joined in, shaping sustainable seafood as cuisine. While these initiatives and tools initially assumed a demand-shapes-supply mode of political consumerism, they have all broadened to include multiple modes of political consumerism. The future of the sustainable seafood movement is therefore dependent on a clearer articulation of diverse modes of political consumerism.

This essay examines the consequences of the near-canonical status acquired over the years by UN Security Council Resolution 242. After tracing the evolution of the vision of peace seen to flow from 242, the essay explores the various ways in which the resolution has been read. In particular, the interpretation of Israel (backed by the United States) is examined, along with the balance of power factor. The essay concludes by suggesting that clinging to 242 as ““canonical”” inhibits clear-sighted thinking on new approaches that take cognizance of the greatly altered circumstances.

These new approaches focus upon building police legitimacy among members of the public with the goal of encouraging widespread voluntary compliance with the law, acceptance of police authority and deference to police decisions, as well as a general willingness to cooperate with the police to fight crime.

The Great Sphinx in Egypt is about 73.2 m (240 ft.) long, including the paws, which are each 15.3 m (50 ft.) long. Would one of its paws fit in a typical classroom? Would it fit in the school hallway? If the 90 800 kg (200 000 lbs.) of copper sheeting that make up the Statue of Liberty were melted down into pennies, how many pennies could be produced? How high would the pennies stand if they were stacked on one another? In which city and state would you find the world's largest ball of twine? Where would you find the world's largest catsup bottle? Such questions were the focus of the World's Largest Math Event 4— Landmarks: Seeing the World by Numbers— in April 1998. All over the United States and throughout the world, tens of thousands of students, from kindergarten through college, participated in the event. With the emphasis that the NCTM's Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics (1989) places on having students use real-world phenomena as a context for the study of mathematics, the World's Largest Math Event is a popular program.
