The methods presently used by U.S. shipbuilders for preparing, nesting and marking plate parts are discussed. The use of existing computer technology is explored as a means for improving these operations by conserving plate and reducing operating costs. Appendices are included which list the advantages and disadvantages of both the oxy-flame and plasma cutting processes, the use of special sized plate in hull construction, and the basic features of a computerized parts nesting system.

The aim of this paper is to explore the rationale for the reform of the shares of local government units (LGUs) in national income taxes in Poland as well as to evaluate the selected proposals for changes in this area. The paper begins by outlining the definition and the basic features of tax sharing in the context of fiscal federalism. The next section provides an overview of the tax shares operating in some OECD countries. The main part of the article focuses on the key principles of the tax sharing system in Poland. The author briefly examines the fiscal efficiency of this source of local revenue in different types of Polish LGUs and the most significant dysfunctions of Polish local tax shares. The final section investigates the most important proposals for the reform of tax sharing and discusses their advantages and disadvantages.

With the development of computer technology, especially the rapid development and extensive application of database technology and computer network technology, the data quantity increases sharply, the accumulation of a large number of data in various fields, and rising fast. Enterprise database or data warehouse has stored a large number of customer data, these data include many aspects of the information of customers, but also contains the advantages and disadvantages of the enterprise operation. If we can use these data quickly, efficiently in-depth analysis and research, to find the rules and modes, to obtain the necessary knowledge from it, will help enterprises to better decision making. The system can successfully excavate students and staff of the tendency of consumption and consumption habits, analyze their satisfaction with each restaurant. The results of system analysis to a certain role for school students and teachers to understand and analyze the condition of daily consumption, so the establishment of this system has great practical value.

With the development of computer technology, people are no longer satisfied with a single operating system. More and more people like to use UNIX system because of its high reliability, good open, and powerful network features. The design of this telecommunications billing system is based on Browser / Server model using the java language for the UNIX platforms laboratory environment. The system can accurately time and automatically charge according to the business types when the user rents the server, and to complete information management of the server and user. This system is simple, friendly interface. It reduces operating costs of the telecommunications operators and improves productivity of them.

Cutting processes of single abrasive grain were simulated respectively by fluid-solid interaction method and Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics method. Advantages and disadvantages of the two methods were compared. Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics method is superior to fluid-solid interaction method in simulating the deformation behavior of workpiece material for the motion of SPH particles. According to the simulation results, it is concluded that workpiece material occurs plastic deformation, flows to the side and front owing to the extrusion of abrasive grain, and finally forms chip in front of abrasive grain.

Abstract The paper describes a method for increasing a yield of stock-tank oil by reducing liquid carryover with associated petroleum gas at crude processing facilities (CPF) of one oil field in Iraq by cooling the feed stream in air cooled heat exchangers. An integrated model of the field has been built consisting of: models of well tubings, models of wellhead chokes, an integrated model of oil gathering network, a model of air cooled heat exchangers, a model of material and heat balance of CPF. The air cooler performance in oil treatment has been asessed in accordance with ambient temperature profile. The main advantages and disadvantages of using the proposed scheme are shown in the article. Considered in the article the air cooler has been originally designed and manufactured for use in another field. Therefore, one of the tasks was to validate the applicability of that air cooler unit in the oil treatment process for a field with facilities in-place. The novelty of the study lies in the non-standard use of an air cooled heat exchangers in the oil treatment. The results of simulation of using air cooling units in oil treatment and the actual operation of air coolers showed increased output of crude oil at the CPF at low capital and operating costs.

The application of industrial gas turbines generally requires more than a detailed energy system analysis. Usually the engineer must “prove-in” his project design to assure that it meets management’s criteria for profitability Several different economic evaluation methods have evolved and there is no one universally accepted practice. This paper illustrates a method of reducing a detailed engineering system design, such as an industrial energy system, to an economic evaluation. This includes developing the minimum investment base case and one or more alternatives which trade off higher first costs for lower operating costs, and then reducing all cases to cold cash — investment and operating costs. Next, three economic evaluation yardsticks are discussed: payout, discounted cash flow, and total owning and operating costs using fixed charges on investment. Advantages and disadvantages of each are pointed out. This includes a discussion of taxes, depreciation, investment tax credit, cash flow, and the time value of money. Finally, computer methods of discounted cash flow are illustrated including a problem with variable annual operating costs. This sets the stage for a “hands on” workshop session using a computer terminal following the presentation.

Anaerobic treatment technology for wastewater has developed rapidly over the last decade. The major driving forces are the low operating costs and the energy benefit derived from the methane generated. Also, increasing Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) surcharges imposed on industrial sewer discharges can often be minimized by anaerobic treatment alone. A variety of new technologies has emerged to treat the various types of wastewater produced. The food and citrus processing industry produce wastewater both low and high in BOD and Total Suspended Solids (TSS) as well as other unique constituents. The advantages and disadvantages of the different types of technologies are discussed, especially as they apply to the types of wastewater produced in the food processing industry. (Operating data from a full scale anaerobic plant treating a fermentation wastewater is presented.) The pilot plant scale study on a citrus wastewater is discussed. Paper published with permission.

Magnetoencephalography (MEG) is a technique used to measure the magnetic fields generated from neuronal activity in the brain. MEG has a high temporal resolution on the order of milliseconds and provides a more direct measure of brain activity when compared with hemodynamic-based neuroimaging methods such as magnetic resonance imaging and positron emission tomography. The current review focuses on basic features of MEG such as the instrumentation and the physics that are integral to the signals that can be measured, and the principles of source localization techniques, particularly the physics of beamforming and the techniques that are used to localize the signal of interest. In addition, we review several metrics that can be used to assess functional coupling in MEG and describe the advantages and disadvantages of each approach. Lastly, we discuss the current and future applications of MEG.
