There’s a new academic meta-field, centered on digital life, that doesn’t look anything like a traditional discipline. The field is more like an estuary, fed by a number of existing disciplines—library and information science, law, sociology, science and technology studies, and communication. It’s an interdisciplinary mashup of fields whose domains (“media”, “information,” “technology”) have merged. What makes the new, nameless formation interesting is its place in the university: the new field is seeded by institutes that—crucially—exist outside the established department system. It is a resolutely cross-disciplinary field, whose brick-and-mortar centers, like Harvard’s Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society, are designed for idea exchange. The academics who populate the field, they reside in established departments and schools; it’s when they have thinking to share that they travel to Cambridge or to one of the other institutes.

Abstract Survey of metrical studies using articles as the unit of analysis. The intention is to of introduce and comment on the present practice of such studies in Brazil. Fifty four studies were selected, published in 2011 and 2012. Data were collected in four sources: Annals of the EBBC 2012, Annals of the Enancib 2012/GT-7 2012; ABDCM, a Brazilian data base comprising national Information Science periodicals and Scielo-BR. Variables considered were: theme and context; objectives from a bibliometric point of view; aspects measured; number of years examined; number of registers examined; data bases consulted. Results show that the studies examined were mostly applied studies describing the production of documents in specific areas of knowledge and the description of that literature. In lesser quantity, there were studies focusing on authors, their production and forms of collaboration (co-authorship and social networkss) to produce knowledge, and their use of knowledge by way of citations. Several databases were used by these studies, such as the Web of Science and Scopus, but also Brazilian bases. Studies covered different spans of time, mostly up to 12 years, all relatively recent. Keywords Metrical studies in Brazil, Information in science and technology, metrical studies.

Personal thoughts on the varied practice and still unformed theory of information science. After some four decades of strong development of information handling practice, largely in support of the disciplines of science and technology, advances in the traditional areas of practice have slowed down as information technology has been more widely applied. Meanwhile, a true theory of information science has failed to materialize.

The main goal of this paper was to conduct an exploratory study regarding consumer preference in the field of the Food Science and Technology. Two questions guided this study: Is it possible to identify a trail of crumbs concerning consumer behavior in the Food Science and Technology field? And, if that trail exists, where is it leading academia in terms of research trends of interest? A bibliometric study was conducted using an analysis software called CiteSpace. The use of this methodology ensured the impartiality of the literature review of the topic of interest. A survey of all articles indexed in Web of Science between 1993 and 2013 regarding consumer behaviour was carried out. In total, 1,786 articles were analyzed. The recent increased concern regarding consumer behavior was evident.  With the USA and Spain having a significant  role in driving the trail. Eight other countries  that exhibited similar influences are: Italy, England, Australia, Germany, Denmark, France, Netherlands and Brazil. The research trends observed were grouped into seven major hot topics: sensory, health, safety, willingness to pay, packaging, ethics, and lifestyle/convenience. However, the development of publishing trends depended on where the research was carried out. A final suggestive finding, demonstrated that scientific knowledge does not occur in a vacuum.
