This essay describes the development of the Post-Zionist critique within Israeli society, from the late 1980s, when it first appeared in academic works, and follows its dissemination into other areas of cultural activity (theatre, newspapers, films, TV and radio). It assesses the overall impact of post-Zionism on Israeli society, with particular stress on the way the recent Intifada (begun in September 2000) has influenced its fortunes in Israel, and raised some fears for the immediate future.

Interest group litigation is often seen as pitting social interests against the state. This view matches a wider perspective that judicial review is a battle between state and social actors. Recently, neo-institutionalist and postpluralists have led political scientists to question the assumptions that underlie these traditional views of judicial review and interest group litigation. If the state is an active patron of interest group litigation then the way we see interest group litigation and judicial review must change. This article traces the history of the Court Challenges Program of Canada and concludes that the Program's evolution challenges the traditional views of judicial review and interest group litigation. It shows an embedded state at war with itself in court.

Abstract:Beginning with the discourse analysis and considering as a case study the subject of the intellectual property of the plant varieties and the control and access to the agricultural germoplasm, it is shown how, in international negotiations, the participating social actors modify their interpretations and restructure the contents and meanings of the discourse. This document shows particularly the way the representatives of the transnational companies have managed to impose their interests,to the detriment of the national states' interests, especially the southern countries.Key words: international negotiations in agriculture; globalization; agriculture; germplasm; intellectual property; GATT; OMC; TRIPS.

This chapter builds on the link between French colonial policies and Muslim–Jewish relations in the metropole by tracing how decolonization throughout North Africa changed the way a diverse set of social actors, including French colonial administrators, international Jewish spokesmen, and a wide range of indigenous nationalist groups conceptualized Jewish belonging throughout the region. It argues that the process led to the emergence of the “North African Jew,” a category to which no individual ascribed but that worked rhetorically to unite the diverse Moroccan, Tunisian, and Algerian Jewish populations into a collective often understood to be in conflict with “North Africans,” “Muslims,” or “Arabs.”

This chapter reviews the project’s argument, that social actors struggle over the construction of visual messages in embodied and discursive ways. Digitization has vastly expanded the encoding capabilities of everyday citizens, allowing them to render their expression of democratic voice visible, even as the ethical rules for visual expression are inchoate. The project’s case studies demonstrate the way grounded practices produce representations that support the authority of the criminal justice system, and together they invite three theoretical discussions: (1) on the way visual journalism’s physicality increases its reliance on those in power, (2) on the importance of image indexicality as a discursive affordance in the public sphere, and (3) on the digital public sphere as visual, and participation in this visual public sphere must be considered as an essential human capability. As a whole, the project offers insight into the construction of the criminal justice system’s literal and metaphorical image.

Reports are important genres in our culture and they have achieved some prominence in education. What it means to report and the way reporting is conceived in our culture can be revealed through semantic analysis. By looking at the meaning of the verb report, this paper will argue for a view of genre as a cultural activity and a view of literacy that involves children in the development of personal perspective. This approach argues against a text based view of genre and a pedagogy that relies primarily on the modelling of ‘considered texts’.

AbstractThe way that welfare policies influence the interpretative processes of social actors is attracting increasing attention. In this article, we investigate policy change impacts on ideas mothers have about the best form of care for their children. The data are taken from representative surveys among mothers of preschool-age children in 2002 and 2010 in Norway. The surveys cover a decade of marked reforms in childcare services with regard to the supply of places, parents’ fees and the right to be given a place in care. Policy change gave rise to major shifts in attitude. From conditional attitudes to the suitability of institutional care, the majority view shifted towards ‘childcare services only’ being considered the best form of care for preschool-age children. This occurred among mothers in all socio-economic groups and in all parts of the country. Based on policy feedback theories, mechanisms likely to have caused this shift – policy visibility, proximity and timing – are considered.

Palavras-chave: Participação infantil; Direitos; Criança;Infância ABSTRACTThe aim of the current study is to address child participation according to actions taken by a Brazilian non-governmental organization. The developed research is featured as qualitative due to the conduction of a bibliographic and documental study and to the consequent content analysis. It is known that studies focused on child participation, as well as the contributions from the Childhood Sociology, allow thinking about the way children act in society by understanding them as social actors, as subjects with rights and voice. The Brazilian experience we brought to the current study shows important paths about children's participation in public areas, mainly in urban areas. Projects about children and their life contexts give children the status of active and competent citizens, and show them as very attentive to the space around them. Keywords: Child participation; Rights; Child; Childhood

Through an exploration of public health campaigns targeting the prevention of FASD, I identified and challenged the concepts of mother blame and stigma found within the discursive practices of the medical system. Framed by feminist theory and critical discourse analysis (CDA), I used van Leeuwan’s approach to social actors to name and explore the representations of people depicted within the campaigns. The discussion focuses on how the current discourse on FASD informs the way that people are perceived and explores possible avenues to challenge and shift the way that substance use is discussed in relation to women and pregnancy.
