Objective: This eScience in Action article describes the collaborative development process and outputs for a qualitative data curation curriculum initiative led by a library faculty (research data specialist) at an R1 research university. Methods: The collaborative curriculum development activities described in this article took place between 2015-2020 and included 1) a college-wide “call out” meeting with graduate methods instructors and additional one-on-one conversations, 2) a year-long training series for disciplinary faculty teaching graduate-level qualitative research methods courses, 3) guest lectures and co-curricular workshops, and 4) the development of a credit-bearing graduate-level course. Results: This practice-based article includes a reflection on the collaborative curriculum development process and impacts, including the development of networks between the Library and qualitative researchers across campus. The article provides a proof-of-concept example for developing relevant and trustworthy library data services for humanities and qualitative social-science researchers. Conclusions: Curriculum development activities focused predominately upon researcher-centered perspectives and identified needs. However, changes in institutional expectations for library faculty (i.e. requirement to teach credit-bearing courses) played a major role in how the curriculum was implemented, its impact and continued sustainability of outputs going forward.

Kolb (1984) defined learning styles as one’s preferred methods for perceiving and processing information. Learning styles have been a high-profiled factor in hypermedia research on how they affect learners’ performances of cognitive tasks in hypermedia environment, yet not much research has been done on how learning styles would affect developers’ preferences in designing and developing hypermedia projects. This qualitative research studied 19 students from a graduate level multimedia design course on their articulations and implementations of hypermedia features, and found that learning styles of the developers did influence their perceptions of the features’ importance and their efforts of implementation of hypermedia features in their projects.

There has been a dramatic shift in the interaction methods of mobile devices over the past decade. From devices simply being able to make phone calls to being able to handle complex tasks traditionally performed on personal computers (PCs); this change has led to new interaction issues that need to be understood during the application development process, particularly as these devices now commonly incorporate a touch-screen as their primary source of input. Currently, the methods of conducting software user experience testing of these devices employs techniques that were developed for PCs, however mobile devices are used within different contexts of use. This research initially reviews the current methods for user experience testing of applications running on mobile devices and then presents, through a proof-of-concept approach, an innovative method for conducting user experience testing employing actual devices.

One of the complaints about the development of military doctrine over the past several decades is that “we arealways preparing to fight the last war.” One of the complaints that surfaced during a four year long study into thedevelopment of a common framework for supply chain management curriculum development was that the text booksused in the curriculum development process were out of date. In other words, we are preparing students for the realworld by teaching them about the historical business world and not the emerging business world. While thisapproach may work in the liberal arts such as history, it is in the words of Freire, doing a disservice to the studentsand not adequately preparing them for the real world. This study looks at a methodology for developing businessschool curriculums in particular. The study reviewed syllabi, job announcements, and textbooks for the top ratedschools and for those not in the Top 25. The gap between what industry is asking for and what schools are teaching ismuch wider for the not-Top 25 schools than for the top ranked schools.

The role of The Johns Hopkins University as an innovative school with a basic mission of scientific research is discussed. Its principle that research is best performed by faculty and students at a graduate level gave birth to the revolutionary concept of a research university. Against this background, the hospital and later the medical school were founded. The innovations that emerged from this medical education structure are touched on.

In Zambia, curriculum development for primary and secondary schools is done centrally. The CurriculumDevelopment Centre (CDC), the institution placed with the responsibility of facilitating curriculum development, claims that the Zambian school curriculum is developed through a consultative and participatory approach throughcourse and subject panels where teachers and other stakeholders are represented. However, there has been noempirical evidence to suggest the roles that teachers, who are the major implementers of the same curricular, arerequired to play in the development process. This study therefore, sought to establish perceptions of secondaryschool teachers on their role in the curriculum development process in Zambia. The concurrent embedded design ofthe mixed methods approach was employed with the qualitative approach dominating the study while the quantitativewas used to add detail. Data from secondary school teachers was collected using questionnaires while interviewguides were used for Head teachers. Raw data collected from interviews and questionnaires was analyzed usingthemes and descriptive statistics and then arranged into significant patterns so as to easily interpret and understandthe essence of the data. The findings of the study clearly suggested that the majority of secondary school teachers inLusaka were willing to participate in the curriculum development process, especially in situational analysis, in theformulation of educational objectives, in setting up the curriculum project, and in the writing of curriculum materialssuch as textbooks. From the study it was concluded that teachers were aware of some of the roles that they couldplay in the curriculum development but were not adequately involved in the development process.
