OBJECTIVE: This papers' goal was to evaluate the presence and the factors associated to Burnout Syndrome among senior year Nursing students. METHODS: Exploratory descriptive quantitative research held in a private University of Rio Grande do Sul, with an intentional sample of 42 students enrolled in the 1st half of 2011, through the application of the instrument Burnout Inventory Student Survey (MBI-SS). The sample represented 76.3% of the population studied. RESULTS: As for the burnout rates, it was found that the professional effectiveness was the amount that reached higher average index 5.03, followed by emotional exhaustion 3.26 and disbelief 1.57. CONCLUSION: Burnout syndrome was not identified among the participants, so that the factors associated with it were also not identified. Adhering to standard precautions is a key factor in reducing the risk of infection among nurses and nursing students. This study identified nursing students’ compliance with standard precautions and the factors associated with their compliance. This descriptive survey included 176 nursing students from a regional nursing college. Compliance with standard precautions was assessed using a 20-item questionnaire. Data were analysed using t-tests, a one-way analysis of variance, and a multiple regression analysis. Participants’ overall compliance rate was 50.5%. Concerning general characteristics, significant differences were found regarding needle-stick or sharps injuries, practicum department (surgical and paediatric), and type of contact (faeces). Needle-stick or sharps injury experience (β = -0.225) and surgery practicum department (β = 0.182; Adj R² = 0.063; p = 0.001) had a significant effect on compliance level. Standard precautions should be emphasized in the nursing curricula, along with systematic continuing education. Educational programs for needle-stick or sharps injury prevention should also be included in standard precautions curricula.

BACKGROUND: Although previous studies have separately revealed that parameters such as anxiety, depression, and secondary traumatic stress (STS) are associated with burnout, there is still a limited understanding of the relationship between anxiety, depression, and STS and burnout in intensive care unit (ICU) nurses. AIMS: To investigate the relationship between levels of burnout, anxiety, depression, and STS in ICU nurses. METHOD: A cross-sectional study was conducted with ICU nurses ( N = 164) from a university hospital in eastern Turkey. The participants completed the anxiety, depression, STS, and burnout scales along with the descriptive characteristics form. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation, and logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: The mean scores for STS, anxiety, depression, and burnout were 40.60 ± 13.77, 17.14 ± 12.90, 13.28 ± 9.75 and 41.39 ± 14.87, respectively. The results showed that, in the ICU nurses, anxiety, depression, and STS components explained 61% of emotional exhaustion, 38% of depersonalization, and 13% of personal accomplishment. CONCLUSIONS: While the present findings supported the paradigm that burnout in ICU nurses is associated with STS, anxiety, and depression, they also revealed some details about the psychopathological factors associated with burnout. These details were as follows: (1) individuals who resorted to avoidance as a component of STS on a high level were more likely to experience emotional exhaustion and depersonalization, (2) individuals with severe depressive symptoms were more likely to experience a decrease in their personal accomplishment, and (3) individuals with anxiety symptoms were more likely to experience both emotional exhaustion and personal accomplishment.

OBJECTIVE: to investigate the burnout syndrome and its relationship with demographic and academic variables among undergraduate nursing students at a public university in Southern Brazil.METHOD: a quantitative study with 168 students, by applying an adaptation of the Maslach Burnout Inventory - Student Survey, validated for this study. We used descriptive and variance analysis of the data analysis.RESULTS: we found that students do not have the burnout syndrome, manifesting high average scores in Emotional Exhaustion, low in Disbelief and high in Professional Effectiveness; that younger students who perform leisure activities have greater Professional Effectiveness, unlike students in early grades with no extracurricular activities; combining work and studies negatively influenced only the Professional Effectiveness factor, while the intention of giving up influenced negatively Disbelief and Professional Effectiveness factors.CONCLUSION: the situations that lead students to Emotional Exhaustion need to be recognized, considering the specificity of their study environments.
