Breaking the chains of ethnic identity: Faïza Guène, Saphia Azzeddine, and Nadia Bouzid, or the birth of a new Maghrebi-French women’s literature

This chapter demonstrates how the media representation of immigration in France is at odds with the recent production of literary works by French authors of Maghrebi origins. Referring to novels by Faïza Guène (Les gens du Balto), Saphia Azzeddine (La Mecque-Phuket), and Nadia Bouzid (Quand Beretta est morte), it shows how the concerns of the “first” and “second” generation of immigrants are a thing of the past, as these writers choose to deconstruct the usual discourse about Maghrebi-French people, inscribe their narrative in different literary traditions, and assert their place in Literature.

Surveying women's literature over the past two centuries, gynocriticism I has found, perhaps to our surprise, that one of the recurrent themes in the writings of both Third World and Western women has been madness. Time and again , women authors from different periods and literary traditions, with diverse cultural,ideological and epistemic affiliations and commitments, bring out this theme to demonstrate emphatically and unequivocally how the symptoms of psychologicaldisfunctionality, together with definitions of madness, are culture-produced and bound, the products of a virulently hierarchical and patriarchal symbolic order.

- The essay aims to give some insights into the topic of migration literature in Italian language, seen as a potential means of acknowledgement and social integration for migrant authors and as a decolonizing occasion for Italian readers. I'm going to question the issue of definition, which at the beginning focused on the concept of italophone literature and that afterward has become more complex. It's hard to reduce this literary phenomenon to strict etiquettes since it is constantly evolving. Moreover, limiting the literary works of first and second generation migrants in Italy to a rigid field runs the risk to betray the ambitions and the wishes of many authors, which instead refuse categories. Media Using on the Maintenance Ethnic Identity of the Second Generation of the Bawean in Malaysia ABSTRACT The formation of identity is derived from biology and the social environment. The biology of genetics is still ongoing. Whereas the social environment is affected by the surrounding environment. In modern times, identity formation remained largely influenced by media platforms. This article is intended to uncover the media platform used by the second generation of Bawean people. Second, this article discusses the media’s impact on the retention of their identities, especially the second generation of Bawean people. This study is based on a qualitative approach through in-depth interviews with specialised informants and library studies. Interviews were analysed on the basis of questions of identity formation derived from the model of Hong et al. (2001). The study found that the platform media used by the second generation are electronic media, including social media and broadcast media, such as radio and television. Print media is part of a collection that is kept for learning. The impact of media uses affects responses to physical characteristics, personality, skills, psychological processes and rights and responsibilities. This media platform directly affirms and retains their ethnic identity. Maintaining ethnic identity Bawean can be preserved as each generation has the awareness and responsibility to promote their ethnic identity through media. The novel by Slovenian writer Goran Voinovi ć (1980) “ Đorđić Returns” (2021) is a sequel to the author’s debut novel “Southern Scum Go Home!” (2008), which turned to the life of first and second generation immigrants from the southern republics of the former Yugoslavia in Slovenia, and became a cult book. The author refers to the same characters and their evolution over the past ten years, a special place in the text is given to Bosnia and the life of the main protagonist there. The clash and overlap of different cultural spaces leads to complex forms of transculturalism, which are re flected in the work in the form of various forms of linguistic hybridity, bifurcated, nomadic identity of characters, actualization of the problem of migration as such.

This study examines how Chinese Canadian youth perceive media representation of Chinese people and how that perception affects their identity construction. Drawing on Bourdieu and interview data with thirty-six first- and second-generation Chinese Canadian youth in Alberta, we discuss three themes of symbolic violence that Chinese youth experience in the media field. We argue that media-initiated symbolic violence not only reproduces and reinforces racism institutionally and systemically but also contributes to the evolvement of a racialized habitus among Chinese Canadian youth. It affects Chinese Canadian youth’s construction of a positive Chinese identity, and at the same time their perceptions as “real” Canadians in the country that they view as home.

The article is devoted to the study of the media representation features of the situation of coronavirus infection spread. The material was articles published in American newspapers. It is shown that the metaphorical model "War" is widely used in media coverage of the pandemic. The relevance of the work is due to the ability of the media to influence the mass consciousness. The methodological basis of the research is formed by critical discourse analysis, which establishes the connection between language and social reality. The article provides an overview of works devoted to the study of metaphor. The theoretical foundations for the study of metaphorical modeling are given. In the course of the analysis, the linguistic means of updating the metaphorical model "War" were revealed. The authors note that this metaphorical model is represented by such frames as “War and its characteristics”, “Participants in military action”, “War zone”, “Enemy actions”, “Confronting the enemy”. It is shown that modern reality is presented in the media as martial law, the coronavirus is positioned in the media as a cruel and merciless enemy seeking to take over the world, the treatment of the disease is represented as a fight against the enemy. It is concluded that the use of the metaphorical model "War" is one of the ways to conceptualize the spread of coronavirus.

The article analyzes physical and physiological problems caused by fashionable clothing in the mid-18th to early 20th cc. that shaped people’s appearances and lifestyles in the past. Affecting the skeletal system and the functioning of internal organs and brain in particular and causing various illnesses, these problems went largely unrecognized by contemporaries, including writers, but would inevitably surface in literary works as part and parcel of everyday life. Without understanding their role, one may struggle to comprehend not only plot twists and characters’ motivations but also the mentality of the bygone era as portrayed in fiction. Chronologically, the research covers the period from the mid-18th c. to World War I. The author only focuses on so-called respectable society (a very tentative term that covers members of the aristocracy and other classes with comparable lifestyles), since it was this group which drew the most attention from fiction writers of the period. The scholar chose to concentrate on the kind of daily realia of ‘noble society’ that permeate works by Russian, English, French and, to some extent, German authors, considered most prominent in Europe at the time.
