This study examines how Chinese Canadian youth perceive media representation of Chinese people and how that perception affects their identity construction. Drawing on Bourdieu and interview data with thirty-six first- and second-generation Chinese Canadian youth in Alberta, we discuss three themes of symbolic violence that Chinese youth experience in the media field. We argue that media-initiated symbolic violence not only reproduces and reinforces racism institutionally and systemically but also contributes to the evolvement of a racialized habitus among Chinese Canadian youth. It affects Chinese Canadian youth’s construction of a positive Chinese identity, and at the same time their perceptions as “real” Canadians in the country that they view as home.

This chapter demonstrates how the media representation of immigration in France is at odds with the recent production of literary works by French authors of Maghrebi origins. Referring to novels by Faïza Guène (Les gens du Balto), Saphia Azzeddine (La Mecque-Phuket), and Nadia Bouzid (Quand Beretta est morte), it shows how the concerns of the “first” and “second” generation of immigrants are a thing of the past, as these writers choose to deconstruct the usual discourse about Maghrebi-French people, inscribe their narrative in different literary traditions, and assert their place in Literature.

The article is devoted to the study of the media representation features of the situation of coronavirus infection spread. The material was articles published in American newspapers. It is shown that the metaphorical model "War" is widely used in media coverage of the pandemic. The relevance of the work is due to the ability of the media to influence the mass consciousness. The methodological basis of the research is formed by critical discourse analysis, which establishes the connection between language and social reality. The article provides an overview of works devoted to the study of metaphor. The theoretical foundations for the study of metaphorical modeling are given. In the course of the analysis, the linguistic means of updating the metaphorical model "War" were revealed. The authors note that this metaphorical model is represented by such frames as “War and its characteristics”, “Participants in military action”, “War zone”, “Enemy actions”, “Confronting the enemy”. It is shown that modern reality is presented in the media as martial law, the coronavirus is positioned in the media as a cruel and merciless enemy seeking to take over the world, the treatment of the disease is represented as a fight against the enemy. It is concluded that the use of the metaphorical model "War" is one of the ways to conceptualize the spread of coronavirus.

A recurring theme in Canadian diaspora literature is the problematization of cultural identity in the children of immigrants as they navigate between Western influences and their cultural heritage. My paper examines the different portrayals of second generation Chineseness in SKY Lee’s Disappearing Moon Cafe (1990) and Wayson Choy’s The Jade Peony (1995) through close reading. Although both these texts depict diaspora-matured Chinese Canadians as incorporating Western values into Chinese tradition, the elder generation’s response to this hybridity is configured differently. Through opposing representations of second generation characters’ use of the English language, Lee depicts early Chinese-Canadian Vancouver as more accommodating to amalgamated culture, while Choy’s Chinatown is hostile to Western influence. Linguistic proficiency is central to the plot of Disappearing Moon Cafe, where “Westernized” Chinese youth are depicted as masters of the English language and Western politics. This enables them to fight against repressive laws and ultimately gains them the approval of the elders, whereas the same bilingualism and biculturalism is condemned as dangerous in The Jade Peony. My paper analyzes white xenophobia in each text as the root cause of this difference in treatment; in an era where anti-Chinese sentiment is again rising, it is valuable to be aware of the far-ranging impacts of this hostility.

This chapter discusses the media construction of women co-offenders and their relationship with their male partner/ co-offender, using the case/ court file material as a comparative tool. It particularly considers the ways in which the women’s representation served to minimise and discredit their perspectives and defence, particularly in relation to the potential influence of their relationship with their male partner on their offending behaviour. It also considers the ways in which the women’s suggestions of coercion or coercive techniques (at varying levels) by their male partner were constructed, particularly in media discourse. In doing so, the chapter is divided into a number of key themes, such as ‘bad women’ and ‘equally bad or worse’. It is important to note that the themes apply to the women at varying levels and the extent to which they were evident in the women’s legal and media representation will be discussed.

This research explains about symbolic violence in Islamic religious education books is rarely done. It also checks whether or not the books used so far contain symbolic violence, because there should be no difference in religious education between upper-class and lower-class. The formulation of the problems in this study are; how the mechanism of symbolic violence in Islamic religious education textbooks in elementary schools, and how the proportion of upper-class habitus and lower-class habitus in Islamic religious education textbooks in elementary schools. This research is a qualitative study with the type of literature study. The results showed that symbolic violence still occurred in elementary schools. The mechanism that runs is through an educational strategy by hiding the process of symbolic violence in the curriculum or what we know as the hidden curriculum. One of the media used to perpetrate violence is a textbook. In Islamic Religious Education textbooks for elementary school level), there is an element of upper-class domination over the lower class. The dominance of the upper-class over the lower-classes can be seen from the proportion of habitus presented in the textbook, the number of upper-class habitus presented through sentences and pictures illustrated is far greater than the lower-class habitus.

From “pizzini” to social media channel: The mediatic storytelling of mafia language  We intend to provide an analysis of how the media representation of the mafia language has turned into storytelling and how this has influenced public opinion and the perception of organ­ized crime in Italian society. The communicative style of the mafia has always been characterized as the result of communication “by subtraction”. From the nineteenth-century oral tradition, through the “pizzini”, to the use of information technologies to manage financial flows and illicit trafficking, they always made us of an essential communication, a conspiratorial language. In the most critical phase of the conflict between the Italian state institutions and criminal organizations, the strategy of the mafia included actions supposed to maintain its media representation, with the aim of instilling fear and uncertainty in citizens and to demonstrate its strength and its control over the territory. This distorted representation of reality facilitates the exercise of the “sweet power” of organized crime, which operates in a more unseen way, increasing its influence. This evolution is immersed in the social context, where culture and knowledge are threatened by the increasing in­ability of individuals to interpret reality.
