Measures of adolescent appearance distress have focused on weight and body shape, excluding other aspects of appearance. The absence of a psychometrically sound, general measure of appearance distress has limited evaluation of interventions and curtailed investigation of psychological processes in adolescent appearance adjustment. This paper describes the development of scales assessing adolescent appearance distress to address this dearth of appropriate measures, validated through cross-sectional design involving 617 adolescents. Two scales were developed, comprising 13 items for younger adolescents and 17 items for older adolescents. Two similar factors were generated for each scale, “fear of negative appearance evaluation” and “salience and investment in appearance.” A third factor was identified for older adolescents, “social appearance comparison.” Sound psychometric properties were demonstrated.

Background and Purpose: Hemodialysis (HD) is the main form of renal replacement therapy for many patients with end-stage renal disease. The purpose of this research is to assess reliability and validity of the Patient’s Perception of Hemodialysis Scale. Methods: Using a cross-sectional design and a convenient sample (n = 236), psychometric properties of the PPHS were examined. Validity was assessed using factor analysis and Pearson’s correlation. Reliability was determined using Cronbach’s alpha and test–retest stability (n = 30). Results: Validity and reliability was supported. Conclusion: Examination of the PPHS provides evidence that it is a valid and reliable instrument for measuring disease-specific concerns with the HD patients, assessing how people experience life, and identifying ways in which people interpret the meaning of their physical and psychosocial health and adaptation to life on HD.

Parenting style has been related to a series of positive outcomes that extend into adulthood. The aim of this study was to analyze the psychometric properties of the maternal and paternal parenting styles scale (PSS-MP) in a sample of adolescents. A cross-sectional design was used, with a probability sample of 2683 adolescents (48.8% women) from 32 public, private, and subsidized schools in Chile. In total, four confirmatory factor models were contrasted, which was the best fit to support the originally proposed six-correlated factor structure. The factor invariance analysis reflected that the metric equivalence according to sex is present at the level of scale invariance. It is concluded that the abbreviated version of the PSS-MP provides sufficient evidence for use in the Chilean adolescent population.

In the context of health policies, the psychological processes of identity and stigma are a team that tries to explain assessment processes lifestyles related to vulnerable groups. Indeed, the aim of this study is to establish the validity and reliability of an instrument that measured four dimensions on a scale of attitudes. A cross - sectional and correlational study was conducted to establish the psychometric properties of the instrument with a non - probabilistic intentional sample of 258 students from a public university. The results show both dimensions as preponderant factors of attitude, but their inclusion in the construct was taken as part of a process of spontaneous activation; actions and risks that only carriers close to group can perform.RESUMENEn el contexto de las políticas de salud, los procesos psicológicos de identidad y estigma son un conjunto que trata de explicar los procesos de evaluación de los estilos de vida relacionados con los grupos vulnerables. Background: This study examined the psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the Attitude toward Physical Activity Scale (APAS) using a cross-sectional design. Methods: The sample consisted of 692 primary students in China (boy 52.6%, girl 47.4%). The mean age of the participants was 9.4 years (SD = 0.92). Psychometric properties of the 57-item APAS was examined using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Results: The hypothesized seven factors model was supported by CFA (CFI = 0.912, TLI = 0.901, SRMR = 0.041, RMSEA = 0.029) after 22 items were removed and the inclusion of seven residual covariance for items loaded on the same factor. Cronbach’s alphas of the scales ranged between 0.50 and 0.76. The composite reliability (CR) was between 0.50 and 0.75. All inter-factor correlation coefficient was less than 0.85. Conclusions: Findings provided empirical evidence that the Chinese version of the APAS has adequate psychometric properties for assessing attitudes of primary school children in China toward physical activity.

Abstract Being unable to find one’s way is a terrifying experience accompanied by feelings of fear or frustration. Persons with cognitive impairment (PWCIs) are apt to get lost and show difficulty in wayfinding effectiveness. Therefore, it is important to develop an instrument to measure the wayfinding effectiveness in PWCIs in northern Taiwan. This was a cross-sectional design with 180 PWCIs to examine the psychometric properties of the Chinese Wayfinding Efficient Scale (CWE) developed by Algase. An exploratory Factor Analysis with varimax rotation was computed to explore the underline conceptual structure of the CWE. The results derived 6 factors: FDPFE = Finding a destination and a path in familiar environments; FDPUFE=Finding a destination and a path in unfamiliar environments; SDAS = Sense of direction and analytic strategies; SDGS = Sense of direction and global strategies; LMD = Landmark and distance in familiar/unfamiliar environments; MAP = Using a map in familiar/unfamiliar environments. This solution explained 66.50% of variance. The internal consistency values for the total and subscales were excellent. Item 25 was single loaded, therefore, deleted. One-week test-retest reliability of the CWE total scale and subscales were estimated using a subset of data (n = 15) by calculating ICC. One subscale, Finding a distance and a path in familiar environments (FDPFE), did not have significant test-retest reliability but the rest of the subscales and total scale had excellent test-retest reliability (.81-1.00). The initial psychometric properties of the CWE were acceptable. Further research should explore the possible associate factors.

This study assessed the psychometric properties of the Arabic version of Exercise Self-Efficacy scale (ESE-A) among Jordanian outpatients with a variety of chronic diseases using descriptive cross-sectional design. Participants’ scores of ESE-A significantly correlated with their reported weekly exercise frequency ( r = .23, p< .001), duration ( r = .31, p< .001), and evaluation of their physical exercise ( r = .39, p< .001). The construct validity was tested using exploratory factor analysis, which retained all items, and the scree plot showed one meaningful factor with an eigenvalue of 10.38 and an explained variance of 57.7%. Furthermore, Cronbach’s alpha was .89 and split-half coefficient was .83 indicating that the ESE-A is a reliable scale. The ESE-A was found to be a robust measure to evaluate exercise self-efficacy among Arabic patients with chronic diseases. Arabic researchers interested in exercise self-efficacy are invited to utilize the ESE-A in their studies to confirm its psychometric properties.

Abstract. Background: Cultivating positive feelings of self in relationships with others can affect perceptions of belongingness and burdensomeness. Aims: The present study examines the relationships of self-compassion, hope, and emotional control to thwarted belongingness, perceived burdensomeness, and suicidal ideation. Method: Participants were 481 college students who completed scales measuring self-compassion, hope, emotional control, thwarted belongingness, perceived burdensomeness, and suicidal ideation. Results: Correlation and parallel mediation analysis results show relationships between self-compassion, hope, and emotional control with perceived burdensomeness, thwarted belongingness, and suicidal ideation. Limitations: The study is limited by its cross-sectional design, sample demographics, and inability to distinguish between individuals with suicidal ideation and those who attempt suicide. Conclusion: The results show that the relationships of self-compassion, hope, and emotional control to perceived burdensomeness, thwarted belongingness, and suicidal ideation are worth further investigation.
