scholarly journals Communicating Sustainable Tourism in English and Italian: A Contrastive Analysis

Sustainable tourism has become a popular field of research over the last decades; yet, while acknowledging that sustainable tourism requires communication strategies different from those of mainstream tourism, scholars have paid little attention to this area of language. Based on two parallel corpora, this study explores the discursive representation of sustainable tourism in web communication in English and in Italian. The methodological framework adopted is that of Corpus Assisted Discourse Studies. The analysis suggests that the Italian representation of sustainable tourism is characterized by a distant stance towards readers and relies on a strong polarization between ‘good’ tourism and ‘bad’ tourism. Communication in English instead relies on proximal person deixis and on the creation of value around responsible tourism by means of factual information rather than on mere evaluation.

This article deals with two key issues in discourse studies. First, to what extent is there a correspondence in the labelling of coherence relations? Second, to what extent are coherence relations judged as semantic or pragmatic? In an experiment, it was examined how actual readers interpret the relation between utterances, by presenting them with sets of utterances which contained both a semantic and a pragmatic relation. It was concluded that the correspondence in labelling was high and that in most cases the respondents chose the intended label. The majority of the respondents judged the relations either semantic or pragmatic, in the course of which most relations were evaluated as predominantly semantic. Moreover, readers judged a relation more semantic when the text contained factual information or portrayed a situation outside the speaker's control. The relation is more pragmatic when the credibility of the utterances is dubious or when utterances are unverifiable.

The creation and teaching of a musical ensemble constitutes a complex process. The process becomes all the more complex when it entails the needs of Special Education. The goal of the present study is to present the teaching of a traditional orchestra to individuals suffering from intellectual deficits. Our methodological framework is anchored on: (a) Applied Behavior Analysis (Miller, 1962; Krumboltz & Krumboltz, 1972; Gibbs & Luyben, 1985; Kazdin, 1984) with the help of technology (Makris, 2015); and (b) the analysis of the mathematical law governing musical pleasure (Makris, Mullet, 2003). More specifically, we will be analyzing the manner in which we can create and teach a traditional orchestra to mentally disabled individuals through the application of the model “visual stimulus” – “psychophysical reaction”. The gradual shaping of behavior entails progressive reinforcement and not anticipation of perfection, the motive of the mentally disabled individuals to participate and be included. The results presented in the graphs confirm in practice the success of the present endeavor.

Objective: to analyze the possibilities of help/support through the mapping and acknowledgement of the social network of women who denounce experiences of violence at a Police Precinct for Women.Method: qualitative study based on the theoretical-methodological framework of Lia Sanicola's Social Network, through interviews with 19 women. Results: the analysis of the network maps evidenced that the primary social network was more present than the secondary on and, despite consisting of significant relations, it demonstrates limitations. The women access the secondary network occasionally in the violence problem and/or its repercussions in their life and health. The discrete presence of the health network in the composition of the social network was revealed and, when mentioned, the relation between the health professional and the woman was characterized as fragile. Conclusion: the importance of the social network relates to the creation of spaces of help/support for the women beyond the moment of the aggression, which accompany them throughout their process of emancipation from an experience annulled by violence, considering that each woman acts and makes decisions in the relational context when she is ready for it.

This article describes the creation of a grid of sustainable tourism indicators, specifically the strategy adopted by the Gaspésie and Îles de la Madeleine regions of Québec. First, a list of indicators recognized by experts, which systematically cover the dimensions of sustainable tourism, was compiled. In the second step, the indicators were coordinated with the sustainable tourism policy framework of each region, to operationalize the indicators while preserving their validity. This two-step strategy led to identification of a list of recognized and measurable sustainable tourism indicators consistent with the tourism policy of each region. This approach thus minimizes the risks of instrumentalization of the concept of sustainable tourism, and guarantees the validity of the assessment and follow-up approaches in this area.

This paper intends to weigh the importance of archaeology by how much impact it has, or could have, on society. Heritage values are precisely the language in which that impact translates to the general public. It is necessary, however, to balance the duty to protect heritage with the mutating and negotiated nature of these values. Archaeologists should not be seen as the wardens but rather as the enablers, the midwives, of local communities coming to terms with a deeper understanding of their past. The more effectively this heritage stimulates the relation of the community with these values, the greater the potential it will have to stimulate social innovation, which is the foundation for sustainable development or abandonment. For many the boon of cultural heritage is tourism, and this is true but to an insufficient extent. In order to be sustainable, tourism must be part of a broader social innovation strategy that foregoes easy pickings in favor of the creation of quality brands, employment, and the protection of traditional lifeways. Only in this way can heritage truly unlock a sustainable horizon.

Abstract This paper presents an analysis of the structures the discourse marker vajon forms in translated Hungarian fiction. Although translation data has been deployed in the study of discourse markers (Aijmer & Simon- Vandenbergen, 2004), such studies do not account for translation-specific phenomena which can influence the data of their analysis. In addition, translated discourse markers could offer insights into the idiosyncratic properties of translated texts as well as the culturally defined norms of translation that guide the creation of target texts. The analysis presented in this paper extends the cross-linguistic approach beyond contrastive analysis with a detailed investigation of two corpora of translated texts in order to identify patterns which could be a sign of translation or genre norms impacting the target texts. As a result, a distinct, diverging pattern emerges between the two corpora: patterns of explicit polarity show a marked difference. However, further research is needed to clarify whether these are due to language, genre, or translation norms.

The objective of this article is to carry out a contrastive analysis between Spanish and Catalan on the use of the English suffix -ing. For this purpose, the greater or lesser acceptability of anglicisms is compared, first, with this word ending in the normative and use dictionaries of both Romance languages. Secondly, it is shown that, besides being a derivative morpheme which is part of lexical imports, it has a productive value in the creation or acceptance of new words with this ending. Finally, the assessment of its presence in the lexicographical context suggests that future researches will verify the vitality of this suffix in the most spontaneous use of the Spanish and Catalan languages.

Wallachian Culture Route is a cultural tourism route that presents the natural values of the Carpathian Mountains and the cultural heritage of Wallachian settlers. The main objective for the creation of thxe route is the development and promotion of sustainable tourism in the Carpathian Mountains. The route is also a way to enrich and diversify the range of touristic offers in Carpathian boroughs on the basis of their own, frequently unused human and landscape capital. The idea of the route reflects the community of the Carpathian highlanders through nomenclature, the music that is manifested in the system of village establishment, spread of fields, glades along with huts, and through the contemporary realization of cooperative, communal activities that refers back to the organization of a Wallachian hut – mutual husbandry. Affiliation with the “Wallachian Culture Route” teaches respect for work and the achievements of past generations, also drawing attention to the cultural heritage of the Carpathian Arc.

The paper explores the key problems of establishing the type of negative information and differentiating between facts and opinions. This is one of the most challenging problems of forensic linguistics that requires a robust methodological framework to be tackled successfully. When faced with this problem, the expert has to deal with the ambiguity of terminology and wording of questions, as well as the complexity of the object of study – the semantics of statements encountered in acts of speech. The paper analyzes the content of key terms traditionally used to address this forensic problem, and offers a possible solution. The so-called “factual square” is a method based on analyzing a statement against four semantic parameters: presence of statement of past action; verifiability of this statement on the basis of specificity of description of the action and its potential observability; lack of alternative, i.e. indication of a different possibility; the purpose of conveying negative information. The paper also analyzes the basic types of factual information and offers specific examples of semantic analysis of statements using the proposed approach.

Without a doubt, visual rhetoric constitutes a fundamental paradigm for recognizing resources that can guarantee an innovative and more effective communication in our essentially competitive corporate communicative environment. In this chapter, the authors reflect on graphic design from a linguistic basis to a particular approach to rhetorical principles. This is presented as a paradigm of an innovative creative model in the discursive construction of brands marks of corporate visual identity. In short, this chapter formulates a proposal of rhetorical variants in which graphic designers can find graphic resources and communication strategies that are essential for the creation of innovative messages.
