Heavy metals, whether from natural or anthropogenic sources have the ability to migrate between differ ent parts of environment and accumulate in flora and fauna, finally reaching humans through food chain. The possibility that plants might be contaminated by heavy metals should be taken into account, when they are intended for use in pharmaceutical and food industry, because increased concentration of some metals may have an adverse effect on human and animal health. Wild medicinal herb Seseli pallasii have been used in traditional medicine as well as a spice in nutrition, hence an assessment of the presence of toxic metals in it is essential in order to ensure its safe application. Vegetative parts of plant S. pallasii (root, leaf, flower and fruit) from Southeast Serbia were analyzed to assess the content of toxic metals (Cd, Cr, Ni and Pb, using inductively coupled plasma with optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). The results have shown that the average concentration of Cd in the aboveground part was almost twice as high 0.21 ppm than in the root 0.11 ppm, concentration of Cr in aerial part was of 0.43ppm, in the root 0.29 ppm, concentration of Ni in the aboveground was of 0.98ppm, while in the root it was of 0.68ppm. The average concentration of Pb in the aboveground part and the root was almost the same (2.31 and 2.15 ppm, respectively). These facts evidenced that the contents of toxic elements in the studied medicinal plant species are below the recommended limits, confirming that S. pallasii from the examined area can be safely used in traditional medicine and nutrition. Heavy metal contamination of poultry meat is a critical issue for human health due to associated risks of cytotoxicity and systemic pathologies after ingestion of such metals. A total of twenty chicken liver samples were collected from markets of Erbil city and analyzed for ten heavy metals contents by Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry. The targeted metals were cadmium (Cd), cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), zinc (Zn) and selenium (Se). The average concentrations (mg/kg) of targeted trace elements were 0.06±0.027, 0.06±0.05, 2.05±0.34, 1.85±0.47, 0.15±0.17, and 33.53±5.24 for Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, and Zn respectively. Copper (Cu) levels significantly exceeded the maximum permissible limit of WHO. Moreover, the average concentrations of toxic heavy metals and selenium were 0.07±0.037, 0.278±0.10, 0.11±0.083, and 2.01±0.454 mg/kg for Cd, Pb, Hg, and Se respectively. Hg and Pb levels exceeded the permissible limits of WHO. Higher levels of Cu and Hg in poultry may pose a serious threat to consumers which demand countermeasures and precautions to be taken. Iraqi Standards Authority and relevant official institutions are strongly recommended to regulate safe disposal of heavy metal waste in the environment to reduce animal exposure to such metals.

Calcium alginate (CA) beads as a green sorbent were easily fabricated in this study using sodium alginate crosslinking with CaCl2, and the crosslinking pathway was the exchange between the sodium ion of α-L-guluronic acid and Ca(II). The experimental study was conducted on Cu(II), Cd(II), Ni(II) and Zn(II) as the model heavy metals and the concentration was determined by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). The characterization and sorption behavior of the CA beads were analyzed in detail via using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The adsorption experiments demonstrated that the CA beads exhibited a high removal efficiency for the selective adsorption of Cu(II) from the tetra metallic mixture solution and an excellent adsorption capacity of the heavy metals separately. According to the isotherm studies, the maximum uptake of Cu(II) could reach 107.53 mg/g, which was significantly higher than the other three heavy metal ions in the tetra metallic mixture solution. Additionally, after five cycles of adsorption and desorption, the uptake rate of Cu(II) on CA beads was maintained at 92%. According to the properties mentioned above, this material was assumed to be applied to reduce heavy metal pollution or recover valuable metals from waste water.

The prospect of three native upland paddy landraces known as Bokilong, Ponsulak and Taragang as heavy metals accumulator for phytoremediation was determined. Bioaccumulation of heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Pb, and Zn) in various parts of paddy plants collected from Kiulu valley, North Borneo in the natural conditions during the vegetative phase and harvest season were analysed by Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES). All selected heavy metals were traced in soil samples of all three paddy landraces rhizosphere where the most available heavy metals were Fe followed by Zn. Heavy metals bioavailability in soil seemed to be influenced by the local climate of the cultivation field. Bokilong landrace is an accumulator of As, Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn. Ponsulak paddy can help clean up the soil by phytoextraction of As, Cr, Cu, Fe and Zn. Taragang paddy has a prospect in phytoextraction of Cd and Pb to remediate excess amount of this element in the soil. Different heavy metals concentration trends were accumulated in these three paddy landraces in grain indicated different nutritional values. Heavy metal uptake characteristic differs between upland paddy landraces and there was also environmental influence affecting the mobility rate of these elements in paddy plant depending on the element type and paddy genotype.

This study aimed to determine the granulometric and mineralogical composition and the contents of trace elements Cr, Ni and Pb in sediments collected in impermeable streets located in the urban perimeter of Toledo PR, Brazil. The mineralogical analyses were performed by a diffractometer, the granulometric by integrated sieving methods and laser diffraction, trace elements in sediment quartered fractions by optical emission spectrometry with inductively coupled plasma (ICP-OES). It was concluded that the sediments with an average granulometric greater than 0.09 mm and finer fractions represented by the clay. The mineralogy identified ferruginous substances characteristics of Distroferric Red Latosol - DRL with high presence of quartz and diopside. Statistically it was shown that the concentrations of the trace elements in sediment samples had a significant enrichment for Chromium and Nickel in the central area’s streets and the Lead in lower concentrations in the streets of the periphery areas. The sediments have an average particle size with diameters greater than 0.09 mm, represented by sand, and the fine sediments represent 2 to 6% of samples. The software indicated that the sediments are from different anthropogenic sources. The diffractograms show peaks for quartz and diopside. The enrichment for trace elements was significant for chromium and nickel on the downtown area streets.

ABSTRACT Cephalopods are an important source of nutrients and some of the most widely consumed marine foods. However, because of contamination of the oceans and the bioaccumulative nature of toxic metals, these foods may pose a health risk. For this reason, the concentrations of some trace elements (chromium [Cr], lithium, strontium [Sr], copper [Cu], and nickel) and toxic metals (aluminum [Al], cadmium, and lead) were determined in 65 frozen samples of cuttlefish, octopus, common squid, and shortfin squid by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry to evaluate dietary intake and toxic risk. Sr was the major trace element (3.03 mg/kg) in cuttlefish; however, Cu (1.57 mg/kg) was found in the highest concentration in common squid. Among the toxic metals, Al had the highest concentration (3.09 mg/kg) in common squid. Al can pose an important health risk to individuals with kidney problems and to children because these groups are most vulnerable to the toxic effects. Significant differences among the four cephalopod types were found in the concentrations of most of the metals examined. Taking into account the average consumption of cephalopods, the contribution of toxic metals does not pose a risk to the health of adults.

In the present study, the occurrence of some heavy metals was determined in muscle, liver and kidney tissues of cattle in Burdur, Turkey. The samples were analyzed for cadmium, lead, arsenics and mercury using Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectrometry in 50 samples. Concentrations of Cd exceed the permissible limits in 2 samples of muscle tissues (0.05 mg/kg), while the concentrations of Cd in the liver and kidney tissues were below the allowed limits (0.5 mg/kg for liver; 1.0 mg/kg for kidney). One sample in muscle tissue contained Pb above the allowed limit (0.1 mg/kg). Arsenic was detected in one sample of muscle, liver and kidney tissues. Hg was not detected in any of the samples. A high proportion of samples did not contain detectable level of the heavy metals. Except for Cd and Pb in muscle tissue, concentrations of other metals were below the permissible limits.
