Abstract Gallium (Ga) nanospheres (NSs) with diameters ranging from 50 to 300 nm are fabricated by using femtosecond laser ablation. The forward scattering of large Ga nanospheres measured using dark-field microscopy is determined by the coherent interaction between dipole and quadrupole resonances while it becomes governed by the dipole resonance when evanescent wave excitation is employed. We demonstrate that the scattering spectrum and pattern of quadrupole of large Ga NS can be resolved by using a cross-polarized analyzer in the collection channel. The experimental observations agree well with the numerical simulation based on the complex refractive index of liquid Ga.

We present laboratory measurements of the interaction between thermoelectric currents and turbulent magnetoconvection. In a cylindrical volume of liquid gallium heated from below and cooled from above and subject to a vertical magnetic field, it is found that the large-scale circulation (LSC) can undergo a slow axial precession. Our experiments demonstrate that this LSC precession occurs only when electrically conducting boundary conditions are employed, and that the precession direction reverses when the axial magnetic field direction is flipped. A thermoelectric magnetoconvection (TEMC) model is developed that successfully predicts the zeroth-order magnetoprecession dynamics. Our TEMC magnetoprecession model hinges on thermoelectric current loops at the top and bottom boundaries, which create Lorentz forces that generate horizontal torques on the overturning large-scale circulatory flow. The thermoelectric torques in our model act to drive a precessional motion of the LSC. This model yields precession frequency predictions that are in good agreement with the experimental observations. We postulate that thermoelectric effects in convective flows, long argued to be relevant in liquid metal heat transfer and mixing processes, may also have applications in planetary interior magnetohydrodynamics.

Abstract In this study, two empirical models for the growth of millimetre–thick GaN material with either highly ordered textured or polycrystalline structure on a ceramic substrate by Hydride Vapour Phase Epitaxy (HVPE) are considered. It is suggested that the specific type of the structure of GaN is determined at the nucleation stage and depends on the character of the wetting of the surface of the substrate by the liquid gallium melt.

Liquid metals, such as Ga and eutectic Ga-In, have been extensively studied for various applications, including flexible and wearable devices. For applying liquid metal to electronic devices, interconnection with the various metal electrodes currently in use, and verifying their mechanical reliability are essential. Here, detailed investigations of the formation and growth of intermetallic compounds (IMCs) during the reactions between liquid Ga and solid nickel were conducted. Ga and Ni were reacted at 250, 300, and 350 °C for 10–240 min. The IMC double layer observed after the reactions contained a Ga7Ni3 bottom layer formed during the reactions, and a GaxNi top layer (with 89–95 at.% of Ga) precipitated during cooling. Numerous empty channels exist between the rod-type Ga7Ni3 IMCs. Ga7Ni3 growth occurred only in the vertical direction, without lateral coarsening and merging between the rods. The time exponents were measured at 1.1–1.5, implying that the reaction kinetics were near-interface reaction-controlled. The activation energy for Ga7Ni3 growth was determined as 49.1 kJ/mol. The experimental results of the Ga-Ni reaction study are expected to provide important information for incorporating liquid metals into electronic devices in the future.
