Abstract Background The indication for endoscopic resection for submucosally invasive colorectal cancer (T1-CRC) depends on the preoperative diagnosis of invasion depth. The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the association between barium enema examination (BE) profile views and depth of submucosal (SM) invasion in CRCs. Methods We reviewed the radiographic and endoscopic findings of 145 T1-CRCs diagnosed from 2008 to 2019. We measured the widths of horizontal and vertical rigidity under a BE profile view corresponding to CRC and compared the values with SM invasion depth. Horizontal rigidity was defined as the horizontal length and vertical rigidity as the vertical width of the barium defect corresponding to each target lesion. The most appropriate cut-off values for predicting SM invasion ≥1.8 mm were calculated by receiver operating characteristic curve analysis. Results Values of horizontal rigidity (r = 0.626, P < 0.05) and vertical rigidity (r = 0.482, P < 0.05) correlated significantly with SM invasion depth. The most appropriate cut-off values for the prediction of SM invasion depth ≥ 1.8 mm were 4.5 mm for horizontal rigidity, with an accuracy of 80.7%; and 0.7 mm for vertical rigidity, with an accuracy of 77.9%. The prevalence of lympho-vascular invasion was significantly different when those cut-off values were applied (43.2% vs. 17.5% for horizontal rigidity, P < 0.005). Conclusions In T1-CRC, values of horizontal and vertical rigidities under a BE profile view were correlated with SM invasion depth. While the accuracy of the rigidities for the prediction of SM invasion depth ≥ 1.8 mm was not high, horizontal rigidity may be predictive of lympho-vascular invasion, thus aiding in therapeutic decision-making.

Abstract— The diagnosis of Hirschprung's disease is made with barium enema and rectal biopsy in full thickness. The Duhamel procedure was performed in 8 cases in 2008 for cases of Hirschsprung's disease. Age range of patients 7 months to 11 years. The average body weight when operated on is 7-21 kg. Morbidity and mortality after surgery were not launched. Anorectal myectomy with low anterior resection, the Duhamel-Martin procedure, and the Soave pull-through endorectal procedure are the most acceptable methods for surgical management. Hirschsprung's disease was treated in Syaiful Anwar Hospital Malang in 2008 with the following data: 1 person in January (1 year), 1 person in February (6 years), 1 person in March (7 years), 3 people in April ( 7 months, 4 years and 2 years), 2 people in August 2008 (7 months and 11 years). Enlarged abdomen with bloating, repeated constipation and sometimes aborted. Withdrawal procedures that work with endorectal withdrawal procedures, all show long results Keywords: duhamel technique, hirschsprung's disease, constipation, infant   Abstrak— Diagnosis penyakit  Hirschprung  dibuat dengan barium enema dan full-thickness rectal biopsy.

Background. Dolichocolon is an inborn anatomic variant of the colon with redundancies often causing constipation and/or volvulus presenting in childhood, adolescence, or adulthood. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of dolichocolon presenting in infancy with constipation and bilateral hydronephrosis. Case Presentation. A nineteen-day-old neonate presented to the emergency department with severe constipation and discomfort. During his admission, he developed pyelonephritis, and subsequent ultrasound of the kidneys and bladder showed bilateral hydroureteronephrosis. A barium enema was performed and it showed a dolichocolon. Enemas and lactulose were initiated with good effect on both the constipation as well as the hydronephrosis. Conclusions. Dolichocolon in a neonate can cause severe constipation which could also lead to an obstructive nephropathy if untreated. Monitoring of urine flow might be indicated when a neonate presents with severe constipation.

Aim: To determine the validity (sensitivity, specificity, likelihood ratio) of barium enema as Hirschsprung's disease diagnostic tool in infants. Methods: This study was a diagnostic test of barium enema compared with postoperative histopathology examinations as the gold standard. The population were all patients with indigestion symptom be discovered at the pediatric surgical clinic of Sanglah Hospital Denpasar. The sampling method was consecutive sampling, satisfy inclusion criteria (< 12 months old, indicate classic symptoms of Hirschsprung’s disease). The total sample of the study was 52 patients. Sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive value were analysed using cross-tabulation test of barium enema and postoperative histopathology. Results: A total of 52 patients were evaluated during the study period, mean of age was 3.31 months old, and boys:girls (75%:25%). Based on symptoms, 98.08% of patients were delayed release of meconium more than 24-48 hours and abdominal distention. Among all the patients reviewed, sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive value of barium enema for diagnostic of Hirschsprung’s disease was 95.5%, 87.5%, 97.7%, and 77.8%. Conclusion: Barium enema can be used as an early diagnostic tool for infants suspected of Hirschsprung’s disease.
