Analyzing and sorting particles and/or biological cells in microfluidic devices is a topical problem in soft-matter and biomedical physics. An easy and rapid screening of the deformation of individual cells in constricted microfluidic channels allows, for example, the identification of sick or aberrant cells with altered mechanical properties, even in vast cell ensembles. The subsequently desired softness-specific segregation of cells is, however, still a major challenge. Moreover, aiming at an intrinsic and unsupervised approach raises a very general question: How can one achieve a softness-dependent net migration of particles in a microfluidic channel? Here we show that this is possible by exploiting a deformation-induced actuation of soft cells in asymmetric periodic flow fields in which rigid beads show a vanishing net drift.

Abstract The present paper studies the periodic flow of a second grade fluid generated by non-torsional oscillations of the disks rotating in the eccentric form under the application of a magnetic field. Subsequent to the rotational motion of the disks at a common angular velocity about two vertical axes, they perform oscillations horizontally in a symmetrical manner. The exact analytical solutions are derived for both the velocity field and the tangential force per unit area exerted on one of the disks by the fluid. Special attention is paid to the influence of the applied magnetic field and it is investigated how the magnetic field controls the flow when the frequency of oscillation is less than or equal to or greater than the angular velocity of the disks. It is found that the application of the magnetic field leads to thinner boundary layers developed on the disks and the changes in the values of the shear stress components which represent the tangential force exerted on the disks occur at larger amplitude.

Plate fin-tube heat exchangers are widely used in air conditioning and refrigeration systems and other industry fields. Various errors made in the manufacturing process can result in the formation of an air gap between the tube and fin. Several numerical simulations were carried out for a symmetric section of plate fin-tube heat exchanger to study the influence of air gap on heat transfer under periodic flow conditions. Different locations and sizes of an air gap spanning 1/2 circumference of the tube were considered for the range of airflow velocities. Velocity and temperature fields for cases with air gap were compared with ideal thermal contact cases. Blocking of heat flow by the gap leads to the reduction of heat transfer rate. Fin discontinuity in the front of the tube causes the smallest reduction of the heat transfer rate in comparison to the ideal tube-fin contact, especially for thin slits. The rear gap position is the worst in the smallest gap range. Therefore, reversing the flow direction can lead to up to a 15% heat transfer increase, if mainly the rear gaps are present. The introduction of a thin slit in the front of the tube leads to convective heat transfer enhancement, which should be further investigated.

A combined numerical-experiment investigation on the unsteady cavitation flow and pressure fluctuation characteristics in the regulating valves is conducted in this paper. The cavitation flow in the regulating valve is an unsteady and periodic flow which could be divided into fixed and travelling cavitation bubbles. The fixed cavitation bubbles are formed in the gap in the initial stage and then fell off and formed the travelling cavitation bubbles because of the re-entrant jet. The travelling cavitation bubbles move downstream, oscillate, and break up into several smaller bubbles. Changes in the length/radius ratio (L/R0) of the valve spool is an important factor affecting unsteady cavitation flow and pressure pulsation characteristics in the regulating valve. The length of travelling cavitation bubbles increases firstly and then decreases with increasing time. With the increase of the length/radius ratio (L/R0), the oscillation period of cavitation bubbles also increases. In the initial stage of cavitation bubbles, the velocity distribution inside the regulating valve is relatively stable, and no re-entrant jet could be found although L/R0 is different. In the collapse stage of cavitation bubbles, the velocity distribution becomes extremely unstable because the collapsing cavitation bubbles affect the pressure drop and velocity field in the flow channel. Furthermore, the amplitude of pressure pulsation increases gradually, and the peak time of the pressure pulsation is gradually delayed while increasing the length/diameter ratio.

Abstract In this paper, we introduced the Lyapunov exponents (LEs) as a significant tool that is used to study the numerical solution behavior of the dynamical systems. Moreover, Hide’s coupled dynamo model presents a valuable dynamical study. We simulate the convergence of the LEs of the model in three cases by means of periodic flow, regular flow, and chaos flow. In addition, we compared these cases in logic connections and proved them in a mathematical way.
