Abstract Coir, known as coconut fibers, are an abundant cellulosic source in Vietnam, which are mostly discarded when copra and coconut water are taken, causing environmental pollution and waste of potential biomass. In this research, carbon aerogels from chemically pretreated coir were successfully synthesized via simple sol-gel process with NaOH-urea solution, economical freeze-drying, and carbonization. The samples, including pretreated coir, coir aerogels, and carbon aerogels, are characterized using FTIR spectroscopy, SEM, XRD spectroscopy, and TGA. The carbon aerogels exhibit low density (0.034–0.047 g/cm3), high porosity (97.63–98.32 %), and comparable motor oil sorption capacity (22.71 g/g). The properties of carbon aerogels are compared with those of coir aerogels, indicating such better values than those of coir aerogels. Coir-derived carbon aerogels is a potential replacement for the hydrophobically-coated cellulose aerogels in term of treating oil spills.

Technical diagnostics of the internal combustion engines, transmissions and other high-loaded units is a process regulated by technical requirements. However, depending on the intensity of operation and maintenance regulations, it is possible to change the technical and operational parameters of machine parts and mechanisms, as a result of frictional interaction of surfaces, temperature, ingress of aggressive chemical compounds and abrasive contaminants, as well as low physical and chemical quality indicators. The substantiation of the technology of spectral motor oil analysis to determine wear products is given in the paper. Determining the masses of metals in the motor oil during wear allows to predict the residual life of the engine and assess both the quality of the oil and the quality of the fuel.

Abstract This study presents chemical resistance tests for three different grades of polyurethane bicomponent compounds: PolyFlex 80A, Silagerm 6080 and Advaform Mark 80. Samples of polyurethane bicomponent compounds were prepared in the form of squares, with a thickness not exceeding 3 mm. They were placed in previously prepared containers with aggressive technical me-dia: Lazurit herbicide, Rakurs fungicide and MAXCUT HD SAE 30 mineral motor oil. These technical media were selected taking into account the processing of agricultural legumes, and the concentration of preparations was calculated specifically for soybeans. The selected mineral motor oil MAXCUT HD SAE 30 is used in many pumping equipment used in the agri-cultural industry. According to the results of the study, it was proved that the greatest effect on the samples is exerted by the herbicide “Lazurit”, in which they swell and increase in weight. The experiment carried out to evaluate the chemical resistance of polyurethane compounds showed that the best materi-al for the manufacture of diaphragms used in piston diaphragms is Adva-form Mark 80. This type of two-component polyurethane compound has the best chemical resistance to the investigated chemically active substances.

Abstract In the present study, three potentially Pb(II)-resistant and biosurfactant-producing bacterial strains were isolated from a total of 23 strains using various screening methods, investigated for their biosorption of Pb(II) and used for the biodegradation of used motor oil. The results show that strain E1 (Bacillus haynesii) has significantly high efficiency in biodegradation of used motor oil, up to 82 % in the first three days. Maximum Pb(II) biosorption capacities of 238.09 mg/g and 99.01 mg/g were determined for strains E1 and F5 (Pseudomonas aeruginosa), respectively. The biosorption process was found to be in good agreement with the Langmuir isotherm for both E1 (R2 = 0.9614) and F5 (R2 = 0.9646), suggesting monolayer biosorption. The four common screening methods, namely the haemolytic assay, the determination of surface tension, the emulsifying activity and the foam test, were also correlated with the Pearson correlation method.

Abstract The efficient management of solid waste deposited in the landfill of used motor oil recovery units is an important environmental challenge which is originated from the regeneration by bentonite as an effective adsorbent. The current study was attempted to convert the black waste into zeolite based compounds through fusion technique. The collected waste powder were mixed with sodium hydroxide, and boehmite followed by treatment at different temperatures, 600-800 °C. Then, the obtained precursors were hydrothermally converted to zeolite A or hydroxysodalite. The effect of parameters like alkalinity, boehmite, and sodium aluminate ratios, fusion temperature, and aging time on structural characteristics, and cation exchange capacity (CEC) were studied in details. The potential of solid waste in the production of zeolite A is significantly affected by mentioned factors which govern on purity, crystallinity, morphology, and CEC. The cation exchange capacity about 190 mg g-1 can be achieved by alkali, and boehmite ratios of 2.00, and 0.53, respectively. The microstructural analyses showed the morphological evolution from rounded shape to sharp edges by fusion at 800 °C due to appropriate recrystallization. Besides, hydrosodalite powder with extended surface area, 77 m2 g-1, could be produced by limited content of boehmite in the presence of NaAlO2.
